The Bottom Line Your monthly download of all things Finance September 2022 AJ editors note It’s great to be back after a summer of finally going home to see my family in Canada which was longer than expected due to the pandemic. Also, over the summer I went to Italy with my husband and 3 daughters, where we explored and went on amazing boat trips. I had a lot of seafood and drank plenty of wine! During my time away both in Canada and Sicily it reminded me how key it is to have a good work life balance as well as to take time out for a vacation. Take some time out with a coffee or over your lunch break to read the article below which highlights how important it is to be more grateful and to make sure we enjoy the small things in life. Not to mention that the photo on the article is so cute! Take a few minutes to read THIS. Since I have returned, many things have happened: like the Local Business Review with our European team and the survey closing. I really look forward to working through the survey results with you all and launching an action plan that we can work towards to create an even better team! So do watch this space… You would have also seen the latest announcement of our new European CEO Varun Laroyia. Prior to this appointment, he was the Chief Financial Officer for LKQ in Chicago. This is an exciting time for LKQ Europe and should also show you all that the sky is the limit in our careers - our new European CEO has a finance background.

Also, I can’t go without mentioning our amazing team who completed the Taff Trail, check out Paul’s section below for an update.

You might have already met our three interns who have joined our team for the next year. Take a moment to read about them and if you see them around, please be sure to say hello and introduce yourself.

I look forward to seeing you later this month at the Town Hall!

Day in the life – Mel Lowe

Early start flying from Birmingham at 8am heading to the DC at Santry in Dublin to meet with the Exec team, Tony Shearer, Stephen Douthart, Edel O’Shea, James Day, Steve Hawley & Jess Harris. Plenty of coffee was consumed prior to this picture!

The flights didn’t quite go to plan! We were escorted off as they sent our plane to Cork instead (James Day stole our flight! ).. then we ended up being delayed even further so I made some friends in the cockpit! He wouldn’t let me have a shot on the tannoy though. I managed to use some of the time wisely though.. and caught up with a few of you on Teams calls – although I’m not sure if you’d have preferred me not to have had a signal!

Finally got there and started the trip with a tour of the warehouse in Santry with Sarah Coughlan & Tony Shearer. After spending a lot of time over the last 12 months working on the surcharges issue which transpired into the set up of the RTCG function, it was great to see what changes have been made in the warehouse and what else we still need to work together to improve.

Two key meetings took place this day: Firstly the monthly Exec meeting. Helen Robinson highlighted a fantastic safety moment which is close to my heart around our employee’s wellbeing. Reinforcing how important it is that we look out for each other and regularly check in on our teams / peers. This was followed by Sean providing us with an update on the latest ECP Financial performance and then Kevan talked us through some of the key projects taking place within his function. These projects are going to be fundamental in helping us achieve the tough forecast & budget expectations we’re heading into. Secondly, was the monthly ROI Ops Board. This forum has been set up to help support the ROI team and business by ensuring that we embed their activities within the UK functions. I started the session by taking the team through the financial performance for July. This covers all areas of ROI, the branch network plus the warehouse. James Day talked us through the latest pricing actions that have taken place from 1st August and then Tom Healy gave a great update on the E&O project currently underway which is working towards clearing out all old stock taking up valuable space in the warehouse in Dublin. Plenty of actions have come out of this session for us to get cracking with.

As most of you will be aware now, we are right in the thick of the Budget season and lots of you will be working really hard trying to get everything organised with your stakeholders. I spent a good amount of time working with the functional owners and Jess to organise the Budget functional reviews for the week commencing 19th September. Those of you who are involved in these sessions will now see them in your diary, but trying to fit all of these in with allowing enough time to do the work in readiness for the tight deadlines was like playing a really difficult game of Tetris!

Whilst I look like I’m probably going to attempt to fly the plane home in this pic, I didn’t manage to get back into the pilots seat for the return journey home! After a busy jam packed trip to ROI I was more than ready to put my feet up and have a brew.. oh and finally put down that super heavy laptop bag that’s almost as big as me.

Taff Trail

Day 1 We headed off from Brecon to start the first 25 miles. For the first 6 or 7 miles we were ok, lots of talking and Mel taking pictures, feet holding up - all really good. After 7 miles, we stopped off and had a drink and short rest, bought some more fluids before setting off again. A few hours later, we wanted to stop and grab some lunch somewhere, but we realised there was literally nowhere to do this or to get fresh drinks. More miles followed and we managed to find a nearby village - no local shop, but luckily a pub that was open. That was the good news. The bad news was that they stopped serving food! So, a few full-fat cokes later we rebandaged our feet (with them starting to hurt a little), filled up our water bottles and set off to find some shade and to share the food I had. The last half of the first day really started to take its toll on us - it was very hot, we were getting low on liquids and we hadn’t had too much food for energy BUT... we made it, and all got there. We had our meal and went off to bed to get rested for Day 2 - 30 miles.

So, what started out as many who signed up for the challenge, turned in to the “fab 4” that were left. Melanie Lowe, Matt Jones, Anthony Khayat and myself (Paul Stirk) were the chosen few who were about to embark on the 55 mile 2 day walking challenge. How hard can that be right! ? We had several meetings beforehand, and a few suggested trial walks before the main event but, given home commitments and probably more ignorance than anything else, pretty sure we all thought, yeah we’ve got this, its walking – how hard can that be! (Later to be proved oh so wrong) We had the meetings and soon got a list of items we needed, which was growing by the day. You’d think we were heading off to the Amazon jungle judging by the ever growing list. We had walking sticks, rain coats, change of clothes, change of shoes, blister plasters, blister powder, drinks, more drinks, food, more sweets than Willy Wonka’s factory with more and more items being added/suggested. The big day arrives (Wednesday 10th Aug). Its 3am when the alarm goes off. I’m up, packed, and off to T2 for a 5.30am meet with the “fab 4”. Everyone’s on time and Matt Jones kindly drives us to his 2nd home where he has a static caravan near the start point. We get our rucksacks on - as we are carrying everything we need for the next 2 days walking as well as for the third day when we travel home. Now let me tell you, the bags weighed an absolute tonne - don’t really know why, but trust me they did. (If you look closely at the pictures of Mel, the bag pretty much covers her entire body and from behind all we could see was just a head and boots (sorry Mel)).

Day 2 We met for breakfast around 7am - none of us could walk properly as our feet were not in good shape from the previous day however, no one complained... we just packed up and set off again with our bags. As you’ll all remember, it was circa 30 degrees on these days and we could tell! It was getting hotter and hotter. Our feet were shot to pieces and we were all hobbling from the start, but knew we had to dig deep and keep going. The path trail for the 2nd day wasn’t fun at all - it was very steep in parts and the ground was a mixture of gravel path and tarmac. To make things worse, there were some steep drops too – all of this started to make this day the hardest ever... and it took its toll on our bodies. As we got more and more into the trail, we soon realised there was nowhere to refill our drinks, and we were starting to run out of water. The sun wasn’t letting up either and our feet felt like they were on fire with the severe blisters we were all now getting. We were all limping badly in one way or another and whilst our physical side was draining fast, we had our mental resilience kick in for a while. This was greatly helped by the support/jokes etc we were receiving from the teams – they really did put smiles on our faces and keep us going. We hobbled on for a good few miles more in silence whilst we all just tried to switch off from the pain that we are all in. I’m sure you heard we got about halfway in and we physically and mentally couldn’t go on any further. We were really concerned for possible injuries and effects from the extreme heat too – so we all agreed we needed to stop. We had dinner, swapped blister pictures and all reflected on the remarkable few days we had and how really proud we are of our achievement. Yes we were disappointed

not to do the full 55 miles, but extremely proud of the 40 miles we did do and the money we raised along the way. (Just re the bags we were carrying for the 2 days. I weighed mine when I got home and my bag weighed 12.6kg which is about 1.9 stone – all our bags been similar weight – told you they were heavy)

Deal of the month

Deal of the day below; Haven’t the school holidays flown by! So it’s that time look towards the start of the new term. Given how quickly kids outgrow their clothes, finding the money to buy school uniforms can become a huge expense so I have found a few offers. Aldi are offering a full school uniform set at a bargain price of £5.

Marks and Spencer, Tesco, Morrisons and Argos have a variety of deals on a range of school uniform products. There is also the added benefit of discounts available through Happi Benefits for purchases from each of these retailers. Also don’t forget you can purchase products in store as well as online through Happi Benefits everyday discounts so do take advantage of this great scheme. - Anita Shoubridge

Presentation Skills – Sean Geens

On Wednesday 24th August, myself and Julia McQuade (Head of Central HR) delivered a workshop on public speaking in T2. The themes of the day were “thinking on your feet” and “presenting with impact”. The course content and materials were designed from scratch for the 13 finance staff in attendance. The day involved a number of group workshops and was a great opportunity to use the collaboration spaces now available in T2, and for colleagues to meet other and exchange ideas. Despite some initial trepidation, all nerves were cast aside and everyone threw themselves into all of the group activities. I, myself, took a lot from the day, and learnt a lot about my colleagues that I never knew (and few things I will never forget)! Thanks to everyone that attended for their contributions and for making the day a success. I hope you all left with a sense of achievement and a few extra tools in your toolkit that will help when you are next put on the spot or presenting in the future.

Which have then been used to support business decisions • Currently training in month end & management accounts • Even though Karl got pulled back into the day to day due to staffing shortage at the start of 2022, he stayed committed to Arleigh finance • Karl likes to get tasks done as soon as he receives them, often beating deadlines.

Quarterly Superstar Chloe Bannister Reasons why Chloe is the first finance quarterly superstar: • Chloe happily volunteered to be a mentor for one of the new interns • She successfully moved from Cash & Bank to Management Accounts to cover maternity leave at very short notice • She has demonstrated a track record of picking up existing spreadsheets and processes and improving them • She is currently working towards AAT level 3 • Chloe has fit into the team so well, both from a work and relationship point of view. She is driven and ambitious and an extremely hard worker with integrity, passion and a bubbly personality which endear her to all she meets. I’m so, so proud of Chloe for this achievement and know that she has a very bright future at ECP • Chloe came in to the team as maternity cover, but it is fair to say we would now be lost without her. Initially, Chloe took on the challenges of IT and quickly earned the respect of colleagues around the business. Having been successful with IT, Chloe has now taken on Marketing and has already made great progress with the tidy up required to enable accurate reporting of actual spend.

first and second year. Likewise learning and teaching was online for my first year which was challenging as it was very hard not having been able to meet any of my lecturers or being able to socialise and create new friends. However, alongside many other students I was able to adapt to these changes and have really enjoyed my time at university making the most out of a unique situation. Talk about working in the branch/your induction so far… My first few weeks at LKQ Euro Car Parts have been very exciting and busy and I have been able to meet many members of the finance team who have been nothing but welcoming and supportive towards my start at the company. Within my first week I was lucky enough to take a tour of T1 as well as T2 which was so fascinating to see in action and as well as this I even visited the Kings Norton branch which was great to see a further insight into branch operations. I spent my second week working in the Brierly Hill branch where I got involved in day-to- day operations such as working alongside admin to get an insight into banking processes, going out with drivers for dispatch and deliveries, dealing with credits, working on the retail shop floor much more. Tell us about a funny / memorable / proud work moment… I worked at B&Q for 3 years in a part time customer advisor role alongside my studies at sixth form and university. A proud work moment would have been where my colleague had called in sick thus, I fulfilled their role for the day in the cash office which was something that I had never done before therefore I learned on the job. As a result of supporting my colleague, my managers were very impressed and I was able to take up a new skill as well as having been able to support my company. Tell us what you’re most looking forward to this year! I am most looking forwards to finding where my passion lies in finance as this year will allow me to understand what I enjoy the most about finance and where my strengths are thus this is a huge steppingstone for my future career. And finally, tell us something interesting about you… Something interesting about me is that I am a social butterfly, I enjoy any activities which allow me to meet up with friends and family - especially going out for and trying new restaurants as I am a massive foodie. In my second week I went to the LKQ Euro Car Parts branch in Derby where I took part in different operations of the branch: for example, one day I was out in the delivery van which was something new for me. The manager and the people working there were very friendly which made my experience more enjoyable. At head office I will be doing logistics which is something I am looking forward to. Tell us about a funny / memorable / proud work moment… One of my proudest work moments was last summer when I was working at a warehouse and that day - I had a very high target to achieve. Due to the coronavirus, I couldn’t take my year 13 exams, but it didn’t really affect me as I ended up getting the grades I needed for the universities that I applied to.

Book of the month

This month’s book is The Secret Barrister. It is a gripping and fascinating book on the Stories of the Law and How It’s Broken. Written by a legal criminal barrister, who wishes to remain anonymous, for obvious reasons. I found this to be brilliantly written, in plain English and on holiday and bedtime reading I found it difficult to put it down. It gives a wonderful insight into how our justice system, although revered by many, has so many flaws and

a lack of funding. The author finds that special way to connect with his audience, tell a hundred stories, yet does not appear to offend or unmask any of the tales or characters that he refers to. If you have already it, then we would love to hear from you. If you haven’t yet, we recommend grabbing yourself a copy! - Mark Vincent
