Vehicles on the ro

Have you turned down servicing and repair work on hybrid and electric vehicles due lack of skills or tools? Don’t get left behind when it comes to servicing and repairing Hybrid and EV. Although internal combustion engine vehicles will be around for a few years yet, there is no doubt that hybrid and electric vehicles will become the vehicle of choice over the coming years and beyond. With government plans to cut emissions by stopping the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030 and multiple car manufacturers such as Volvo and Ford committing to a 100% electric range by 2030, the change is inevitable. Even now, when you switch on the radio or pick up the paper, adverts tell you that roadside repair organisations, franchise dealers and fast fits technicians are hybrid and electric vehicle trained. This means that you could be missing out or losing your long established customers, if they have recently changed to a hybrid or EV and you can’t work them.

Did you know... According to AA Accident Assist, more than half of electric vehicle drivers (52%) say they are uncertain that their vehicle will be repaired safely if it’s involved in a collision. A survey of more than 13,500 drivers carried out by AA Accident Assist found that three fifths (62%) of drivers are most concerned with the cost of EV repairs. Half of drivers (49%) placed high importance on having specialist EV repairers carrying out mechanical repairs, while 45% say they would rank the availability of parts as important. A quarter (24%) considered the environmental factor of the safe disposal and recycling of the main driving battery as important to them. Note insurers will signpost their customers to workshops that are hybrid and EV ready.

A survey carried out by LKQ Euro Car Parts with garages and workshops revealed that the biggest challenges facing them in the next 2-3 years are:

Repair of hybrid and electric vehicles

Changes in the car parc due to the growth of electric vehicles

Skilled technicians

Investment in ADAS and diagnostic tools

oads are changing

SMMT said 2021 was the most successful year in history for electric vehicle uptake as more new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were registered than over the previous five years combined.

18.5% of all new cars registered in 2021 can be plugged in.

190,727 new BEVs joined Britain’s roads

114,554 plug-in hybrids (PHEVs)

LCV BEV increased by 142.3%, although this equates to 12,759 zero emission vans and a total market share of 3.6%, this will continue to change rapidly based on record high energy charges and local and metropolitan councils creating clean air zones.

WHY IS HYBRID AND ELECTRIC VEHICLE TRAINING IMPORTANT FOR YOUR GARAGE?

Hybrid and electric vehicles are at the forefront of many car manufacturers’ agendas. ■ Most recently Nissan announced their £1billion investment into a new battery factory which has the potential to produce batteries for 100,000 electric vehicles each year ■ Volvo has committed to making its entire model line-up fully electric by 2030 ■ Ford promised that 100% of their passenger vehicle range in Europe will be zero emissions, all-electric or plug-in hybrid by 2026 and will be completely all-electric by 2030 ■ The car parc will continue to change with new marques from the Far East soon to be on the road, these cars may ‘simply retail’ not be supported by dealer group technicians That is a lot of potential custom for your garage but are your technicians trained to deal with this technology? Did you know?… … 90,000 automotive technicians will be required to provide sufficient workforce to service the volume of zero emissions vehicles predicted to be on UK roads by 2030*. 90,000 techs are needed by 2 30

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

What is ADAS? Advanced Driver Assistance Systems often abbreviated to ADAS, is the use of components fitted to a vehicle, to aid or help the driver’s driving experience. These components can be as simple as parking sensors, to more advanced systems like autonomous emergency braking and lane departure. The use of ever more sophisticated driver assistance, is developing to the point where one sensor can now control several different systems and modules on the vehicle. In nearly all cases they are safety critical.

The range of ADAS systems include:

AUTONOMOUS EMERGENCY BRAKING

TRAFFIC SIGN RECOGNITION

ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL

BLIND SPOT DETECTION

CROSS TRAFFIC DETECTION

REMOTE ACTIVE PARK ASSIST

ADAPTIVE HEADLAMPS

LANE KEEP ASSISTANCE

What is the push for ADAS systems and technology? NCAP Safety Rating*

2017 Around 25–50% of new cars could have ADAS

2020 100% of new cars for 5 Star NCAP rating

2022 100% Mandated every vehicle sold must have ADAS

Why you need to understand ADAS? As vehicles become ever-more automated and autonomous, either as part of mandatory legislative requirements, or as new ‘added-value systems offered by a vehicle manufacturer, the ability to diagnose and repair the ADAS components and systems will require new competencies for the workshop and the technician. We can expect increased technical training requirements, specialist tools and repair procedures and the ability to clearly show that the repair and re-calibration has been fully and correctly conducted. These requirements are needed to show that the ADAS are operating to their original design criteria, that the vehicle is safe to operate on the road. Insurance companies, will only pay you should you carry out the correct ADAS calibration.

* The motorists are aware that they have ADAS on their vehicle and now become reliant on this.

Security Gateaway Security gateway provides quick and secure vehicle access. From 2017, vehicle manufacturers have been fitting a Security Gateway module to vehicles to stop unauthorised network manipulation via the OBD port or telematics, which can put vehicle systems and drivers at risk.

Therefore, it requires an authorised diagnostic tool to be unlocked by the vehicle manufacturer to gain full access. Normally information such as fault codes and live data can be read however security gateway restricts sending commands, like clearing fault codes, service reset etc.

What you’ll need to get started ■ A understanding of Security Gateway and Cyber Security ■ A compatible diagnostic tool ■ A stable Internet connection ■ One of the following three depending on your diagnostic tool manufacturer: 1. A login with the OEM that has been setup and has credits ready to use 2. An additional subscription with the diagnostic manufacturing to enable access 3. A diagnostic tool that includes security gateway access as part of the subscription. How can I use this in my workshop? The job Unable to reset service light or clear fault codes on a FIAT 500X ■ The vehicle is fitted with a security gateway module The solution A compatible diagnostic tool is required to gain access from the OEM and unlock the vehicle for full access.

How does it work? Compatible diagnostic tools can be used to connect secure the vehicle gateways using a fast and secure channel between the repairer, the scan tool, and the manufacturer’s portal. Currently there are a few ways aftermarket diagnostic manufacturers can gain access to vehicles fitted with security gateway some examples include: ■ The technician is required to sign up to the OEM’s portal and input the signup details into the diagnostic tool. They are then charged direct from the OEM for access (not to be confused with Pass-Thru) ■ The diagnostics manufacturer charges an additional fee on top of the normal subscription for access to unlock vehicles. This may be by manufacturer or an additional subscription to cover all supported ■ The diagnostic manufacturer includes access as part of the normal subscription and the access is made available to the user.

Did you know?… …Currently more than 10 manufacturers already use Security Gateway / Cyber Security safety measures and this is set to increase.
