Winter is well underway, darker evenings and cold frosty mornings mean the roads become hazardous and accidents happen. Offering a winter health check helps customers make sure their vehicle is safe whilst also providing potential revenue from any urgent repairs or maintenance that you identify during your checks.

Why offer a winter health check service? Offering a winter health check helps customers make sure their vehicle is safe whilst also providing potential revenue from any urgent repairs or maintenance that you identify during your checks. The health check takes approximately 30 minutes to complete, so doesn’t eat too much into your working day, and can be easily added to jobs you already have booked in.

2

h a free winter health check Why should your customer have a vehicle health check ready for winter?

Wiper blades, screen wash and the cooling system Over the next few months the rain and icy weather will set in meaning customers will need their wipers and screen wash more often. Plus, the colder weather can have a detrimental effect on a vehicles cooling system. Checking wipers are free from splits and damage, making sure screenwash is topped up and antifreeze has been added to the cooling system will ensure the vehicle is in tip top condition and ready for winter.

Battery Battery failure is possible at any time of year if its charging power is drained but it happens more frequently throughout the colder months. Batteries naturally lose their charging capability over time so it’s in your customers best interest to have their batteries checked. 42% of all car breakdowns are caused by a failing battery. Light Bulbs With the darker nights and mornings drawing in, ensuring your customers vehicle’s lights are working correctly is critical for their safety and other road users as it allows you to be able to see and help others to see you. Having a faulty or damaged bulb is illegal so check to ensure all of these are functioning correctly. How can I promote this service to my customers? We’ve created a handy business toolkit to help you promote a FREE winter vehicle health check to your customers in your waiting rooms, on your website and across your social media platforms.

How to promote

We have created a series of helpful support guides to use in your business to help you stand out from your competitors.

Are you struggling to retain your customers?

Are you advertising your business efficiently?

Do you want to attract new customers?

Having the perfect customer database is great, are you using it the right way? We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again; having an up-to- date customer database is crucial for keeping on top of work, helping you to keep track of customer’s historical visits and when they might next be due an MOT or even new brake pads and discs. If you don’t currently have a customer database our cloud based CarSys GMS, could be a helpful tool in keeping your data all in one place. Identifying the customers who have used you once, the top spenders and those who’ve only made a one-off purchase could be used to your advantage.

The importance of telephone contact

Aside from talking to someone face-to-face, a phone call is often the best way to get an instant response. Reach out to customers by phone, remind them their MOT is due soon, and ask them if they want to get booked in. Chances are their MOT hasn’t crossed their mind yet so the likelihood is they will book there and then.

Social media helps you connect with your customers, increase awareness about your brand and boost your leads and sales. Choosing the right platform for you

Facebook Has the highest number of UK users and one of the most widely used platforms. Facebook is great for users to create business pages where customers can leave reviews, view a business’ opening hours, or get in contact. Facebook is also a great place to get recommendations, make sure you are a member of local groups where you can recommend your business to customers looking for things such as repairs or MOTs.

Instagram For those who like to share more video and image content, that will engage their

audience, or sell a certain product. If your garage likes to make cleaning videos or even before and after pictures of car restorations, Instagrammight be a good place for your garage to start. Just keep in mind that Instagram is generally targeted at a younger audience, so if you are targeting customers between 17 and 34, this could be for you.

4

e your business

Twitter If you’re new to the social media world, we wouldn’t recommend starting on Twitter, but it can be a great place for your business to share short updates. Twitter is a micro-blogging platform where users can share short ‘tweets’ of information. It’s best used for live news, trending topics and interacting with brands. It’s also a very common platform for customers to complain, tweeting their bad experiences with brands.

YouTube A video sharing network, where you can upload videos that engage with your desired audience. Many YouTube users are now ‘vlogging’ (video blogging), their days which usually have some entertaining content throughout. For a garage, popular videos could include car cleaning demonstrational video, product review, or a process for repairing a certain part of a vehicle.

LinkedIn A professional social network that can be used to build brand awareness and reach out to industry professionals, also a great platform for recruitment.

And when you’ve chosen the right platform for you…

■ Try and focus on one or two social channels, to avoid getting bogged down. By focusing on just a couple you can really perfect your posts and ensure you’re responding quickly to any messages or interactions on your pages, and in turn keep customer satisfaction levels high. ■ Consider where your target audience will be spending the most time , for example if you are keen to target a younger audience through engaging pictures or videos, then Instagram would be the best to focus your own content. ■ What platforms do your competitors have? Do a competitor analysis and have a look at what your local garages are using, make that your starting point. ■ Use correct image sizes for each channel. Check the recommended image sizes for each platform and size your images appropriately. Make

sure your images are as clear as possible, without stretching or pixelating. This will help your brand look more professional and may help improve engagement of your content. ■ Clear and concise with call to action. The shorter and snappier your content, the better. On social media, you have no longer than 8 seconds of someone’s attention when they are scrolling through their newsfeed, so make it short and to the point. Always leave a call to action on your posts, so people can book in, view your website or buy a product you might have mentioned in your post. ■ Post at the best times. Look into the best times to post on each platform. Timing matters, and by posting at the suggested times, you have more chance of your content being seen, increasing your engagement rates and in turn increasing work for your garage!

Garage

Easy Start Scheme

Why Garage Services? These days keeping customers and finding new ones is tough. With fierce competition, you shouldn’t have to decline work because you're unable to offer services in-house. Nothing is more expensive than a missed opportunity. This is where Garage Services from LKQ Euro Car Parts can help – a range of added value services designed to provide your customers with all the regular services required to keep their vehicles up to date.

■ Additional revenue streams for your workshop ■ Ability to provide first fix solutions Benefits of Garage Services:

■ Increased satisfaction and retention ■ Avoiding losing a customer or work to a competitor.

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

There are approximately 4.5 million Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) enabled vehicles in the UK, according to Thatcham Research. Calibration is required whenever a sensor’s aim is disturbed in any way. This can occur because of collision or in a workshop due to a windshield replacement, suspension repair or wheel alignment. All repairers should follow the UK Insurance Industry Requirements (IIR) for the safe repair of ADAS equipped vehicles.

Buy or Lease with Confidence Workshop Solutions aim to provide you with the tools, equipment and service that match both your personal expectations and your business requirements. We only use suppliers who can offer a comprehensive warranty service and backup for the life of the equipment. We will also arrange demonstrations wherever possible and offer advice on the best products and services to suit your business.

£

Training The ADAS course offered by AutoEducation covers the implications of incorrect alignment, operation, and calibration techniques. On completion of the course, delegates will be able to: understand features of Dynamic and Static calibration and accurately calibrate camera and radar-based driver assist systems.

Services

Diagnostic Tools and Services

Having the right diagnostic tools can ensure your garage is able to diagnose and resolve issues across the vast range of today’s vehicles and changing technology. This also reduces the amount of technician time spent on each vehicle, giving you increased work capacity. Technical Support – Security Gateway From 2017, vehicle manufacturers have been fitting a Security Gateway module to vehicles to stop unauthorised network manipulation via the OBD port or telematics, which can put vehicle systems and drivers at risk. It therefore requires an authorised diagnostic tool to be unlocked by the vehicle manufacturer to gain full access.

Wheel Alignment

Regular alignment checks are an essential part of a vehicle’s service maintenance schedule. Every day driving affects wheel alignment and over time, wheels can become misaligned. Poor road conditions, potholes, kerbing a vehicle and worn suspension components will also impact on a vehicles wheel alignment. Most sources recommend an alignment service every 10,000 miles, 1 to 3 years, with each new set of tyres or when replacing steering and suspension components. It only takes 10 minutes to perform a wheel alignment check and it’s estimated that 1 in 5 cars coming into a workshop will have an alignment issue and on average 1 in every 14 vehicles checked will highlight issues that will require additional parts and labour work to be carried out.

Why Alignment? ■ Regular wheel alignment checks are recommended ■ If you replace steering or suspension components ■ If you replace tyres ■ 1 in 5 vehicles will require alignment.

13

Garage Services

Tyre and Wheel Equipment

Around 10% of all MOT failures are tyre related. This trend has been increasing year on year, with the number one tyre failure associated to worn treads, bulges, and cuts in the tyre wall. Any vehicle displaying a TPMS fault when submitted for its MOT will result in a test failure. Due to wear, tyres need to be replaced every two to three years based on the current average annual mileage figures. This figure doesn’t consider any tyre damage caused by poor road conditions such as potholes. TPMS sensors/valves also need to be checked annually and replaced if required.

If you’re currently turning away or sending tyre related work to another garage because you don’t have the right equipment for the job, you should consider adding tyre replacement as a service.

Engine and DPF Carbon Cleaning

With tighter MOT rules and limits linked to vehicle emissions, it’s vital that emission control devices such as catalysts and diesel particulate filters are functioning correctly. Why Carbon Cleaning? Trends show we’re keeping vehicles longer and looking to reduce cost of vehicle ownership. There are millions of vehicles on the road with DPFs. Up to 70% of clogged DPFs are unnecessarily scrapped, meaning you could be paying for a replacement when cleaning would restore the part to perfect working condition.

The benefits of providing an engine and DPF carbon cleaning service are:

■ Reduces emissions ■ Clean blocked DPFs ■ Improves fuel efficiency ■ Restores engine performance ■ Increases a positive reputation from customers

If you don’t have the equipment you need for certain jobs and find you are turning away or sending work to another garage, talk to your local LKQ Euro Car Parts branch about Garage Services. This could help bring your garage to the next level and open up your streams of revenue.

14

Your Garage Management System

Time management, workflow, stock, technicians are all part of running a busy workshop. Managing them all in one place would be even better. If you currently don’t have a Garage Management System then you should talk to us about CarSys.

We’ve updated our cloud-based Garage Management Software (GMS), CarSys to improve the software’s data configuration, service payment breakdown and accounting solution integration. Launched last year and exclusively available to customers of LKQ Euro Car Parts, CarSys is a user- friendly software platform that allows garages to maximise billable time, streamline the way they work and enhance the customer experience they offer. As well as using Haynes Pro data to calculate prices and schedule jobs in the workshop, technicians can now access a vehicle’s engine oil and spark plug

quantities via a simple VRM lookup – helping them order the right parts, faster. To help garages manage payments more efficiently and deliver a professional customer experience, CarSys also now includes the option for both parties to view a job’s payment breakdown, along with a record of which payments have been taken and what is still owed. And in addition to Sage and QuickBooks, the software can also now sync with leading accounting solution Xero.

For £49.99 per month, garages can access CarSys for an unlimited number of users. Other features include a direct link to the full LKQ Euro Car Parts catalogue, facilitating 24/7 online parts look up and quick ordering through its Omnipart trade website.

Using a cloud-based solution means there is no need for installation, and all information is saved securely and automatically. The system is accessed through the CarSys website and supported by a mobile app, meaning technicians can dip in and out between jobs.

For more information, contact your designated LKQ Euro Car Parts account manager, or get in touch with your local branch. What is CarSys CarSys is garage management software that helps you run your workshop with greater efficiency and visibility of everything in one place. As it is cloud-based, you can run your business from anywhere – the garage itself, home, on the go or even keep track while on holiday! Being able to manage technician time, availability, contact customers, manage stock and order parts in one solution is why you should consider CarSys.
