Every third vehicle entering the workshop could require a new battery By testing every battery, you are keeping your customers moving! It’s recommended that workshops should be performing a battery test on all vehicles coming in for any kind of maintenance. Due to lockdown, many vehicles will not have visited a workshop for a long period of time, so it is important for a technician to perform a battery test as part of a service on the vehicle whilst it’s with you.

Inform your customer of the Battery Test Check results.

40% of national breakdowns occur from a direct result of battery failure. Accurate testing can identify batteries in a poor condition and could result in a new battery being fitted, keeping your customers happy and on the road.

AGM EFB

When you look at the power a battery is required to provide on modern vehicles, it is understandable to see why a more robust battery is required. Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) and Enhanced Flooded Batteries (EFB) have been designed for the increasing electrical demands placed on the battery and fitting a traditional flooded battery will not provide the output needed for the start-stop function or cope with the additional vehicle starts. In addition, more complex vehicle systems such as infotainment screens, smartphone interface and wi-fi output are all commonplace on the latest vehicles. AGM and EFB batteries are designed for the modern vehicle with complex technology. When replacing a battery, it is vital that the correct type of battery technology is fitted to the vehicle.

Not all battery testers are created equal

The challenge is all battery testers will give a result when testing – good, bad, recharge and retest. Even a tester that is not capable or designed to work with stop start batteries will falsely give a ‘good’ result. When a tester is used that doesn’t have a separate search for battery type AGM and EFB it basically passes it as “good” because the algorithm in the tester is incapable of reading the different battery technology of stop start vehicles. It then tests the battery within its own pre-set parameters for standard batteries.

The Prime Minister has announced sales of brand new petrol and diesel vehicles will be banned from 2030 and hybrids from 2035.

The statement brings forward the original date by 10 years and is part of Boris Johnson’s 10-point plan for a ‘green industrial revolution’.

Can Your Garage Offer Class 7 Testing?

There’s a BIG opportunity for you to tap into according to the latest advice from the SMMT. With the hangover from the MOT extension earlier this year and the demand remaining high into December, the DVSA is warning that some van operators are finding it difficult to book Class 7 test slots in some parts of the country. Ok, but what does that mean for me? Vans are in peak demand right now. Not only have most of us already switched to online shopping thanks to lockdown, we’re in the run up to the busiest shopping period of the year, so there are plenty more deliveries being made right now. Struggling to get an MOT could spell disaster for Class 7 vehicle owners, who just can’t afford to have their vans out of action during this time. That’s where you can step in and save the day...

WHAT CAN I DO? There are a few quick things you could do to not only help the nationwide demand, but also take advantage of the opportunity the backlog presents your business.

1. Prioritise Class 7 jobs wherever you can Don’t send the opportunity elsewhere – if your customer has an urgent need, they are much more likely to come back to you in the future. Most van drivers have a car too, you could be securing future business by getting to them quickly now. 2. Flex your opening hours December’s a traditionally quiet month, with business ebbing and flowing throughout the lockdowns and national restrictions, this could be a great opportunity to bring business in between now and the new year.
