Get the most out of your MOTs with these Top Tips

1. Are you aware the DVSA do not stipulate how long a MOT should take? The MOT testing guide makes no reference to time taken for a MOT, It takes as long as it takes to make a complete and thorough inspection. The national average for the last 15 years has been around the 45-minute mark. Testable vehicles have improved and testing equipment has improved compared to years gone by. So why haven’t the test times improved? It’s a simple fix, complete a MOT as per the MOT inspection manual, when its complete log off and move onto the next one.

2. Credits for training, were you aware you can have credit points attached to your VTS * ?

Training credits serve to recognise training given (or planned to be given) to Testers that goes beyond the minimum standards required by DVSA.

Who can earn credits? MOT Testers & Test Centre managers.

How does it work? Training credit courses aim to reinforce correct test standards. LKQ Euro Car Parts provide training sessions that include training logs and certificates. You accrue 15 credits every session.

What doesn’t count: ■ In-house training during opening hours ■ Initial training ■ Current CPD & assessment

3. Pre-Checks

This is the manual list the MOT testers pre checks, which need to be carried out. But were you aware the MOT tester does not need to complete the pre checks. Have you an apprentice or counter staff who are competent enough to carry out the MOT Pre-Checks. This could save your MOT tester 5 minutes per MOT, leaving more time for your tester to test. Are you aware if a vehicles timing belt were to snap during a MOT test, it is your problem, the condition of the cambelt should have been ascertained before starting the MOT.

If a timing belt is faulty or worn, having this discussion before the MOT could lead to additional sales for your business.

The DVSA expects a successful Quality Control (QC) regime in place to be checking MOT testers who are experienced, at least once every 2 months. This QC is passed on a thru put of 2-3 MOT per days. If your MOT testers are doing double the expected amount, then you would have to increase your QC regime to ensure compliance. 5. Quality Control This holds a £10 fee as per the VT9a document and this does not count towards your site slot usage. Alternatively, the customer can print this at home using their V5 document. Duplicate test documents can be produced by all VTS* roles, the producer must add their signature on the issuer signature line. SAVE TIME 4. Duplicate Test Documents These can be completed by anybody the AE (Authorised Examiner) assigns in the test station, as this is a paperwork process, your counter staff or another team member could prepare the paperwork for the customer.

Vehicles in the UK require MOTs to be road legal and worthy. This year has seen a significant change due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

MOTs Heating Up in October and November!

MOT forecast increase for 2020

Latest MOT data from the DVSA shows that in October and November many areas across the UK will increase on a typical year, meaning extra MOTs will need to be completed. The changes from a typical year to this year are huge – In some cases as high as 68% and never falling under 34%. As we keep saying the demand will be great, getting ready, making bookings will all help to keep customers flowing in through your workshop. Examples on the map show that the demand will be far and wide with the number of extra MOTs needing to be done.
