With the list of countries the UK can travel to still very restricted, it isn’t surprising the demand for UK staycations and road trips are increasing as we ease out of lockdown.

Have you thought about offering a free health check to your customers? Most of these cars have been sitting on driveways, roads or in garages for prolonged periods over the last year and who knows what issues they’re harbouring. By offering extra checks and making sure cars are ‘staycation’ ready will be essential in the coming months to get customers back to normal.

Why offer free health checks? A free health check helps customers make sure their vehicle is safe whilst also providing potential revenue to garages from any urgent repairs or maintenance that are identified during the process. Why Should I Offer an Air Con Service? What Do I Need to Do to Get Started?

Not all garages offer an air con service but it’s something that could provide you with a unique opportunity if it’s something your competitors don’t. Many new cars on the road will now have air conditioning fitted as standard, so identifying the right A/C machine that allows you to service them effectively is an area that needs your full attention. Plus, the return on investment speaks for itself.

1234yf has been the refrigerant of choice in all new manufactured vehicles since 2017. These 4-year-old cars are now coming out of their warranty and service packages and entering the aftermarket. Coupled with those vehicles running on 1234yf since 2013, this year has never been a better year to invest in a 1234yf machine.

There’s also approximately 7 years left of any real R134a volume work. So even though R134a is no longer the preferred refrigerant for manufacturers, there is the capacity for work out there, so a dual gas machine could be an option if you’re working to a budget or are considering investing in something now whilst the value for money is still there.

Air con is so much more than just basic re-gassing.

Would you know what to do if a car comes in with no refrigerant present in the system? When it is evident there is a leak on the system and component replacement is required?

Basic leak testing and performance tooling should be used at the initial stage of inspection to see efficiency of the system and can help save time rather than re-gassing and your machine filing a vacuum leak check. Remember due diligence is vital – that vacuum leak check is not definitive and should not be used as the ‘gospel word’ and the last thing anyone wants is a car returning to the workshop with the same fault. Further diagnostic tools for establishing leaks on the system can generate additional revenue through repairs required and save valuable time in getting to the root cause of the issue.
