Reaching out to your customers The modern age has overtaken in many ways when it comes to advertising and growing your business. We have huge focuses on social media, emails and even online reviews. But what is wrong with an old-fashioned phone call?

Testing for sales Here are some things you can check that will help increase your revenue and customer loyalty: ■ One garage owner reported a 43% uptake based on phone calls he made in a single day. ■ Another owners mailing resulted in no bookings, but a follow up call resulted in 11 bookings. Many cars have been sitting idle or barely used for months, why not call your customers a get their car booked in for an ‘Health check’ or call ahead and book in MOTs that are due in the next calendar month?

Checking a vehicle’s air con is easy if you have the right tools in place, but the initial investment in the right machinery can put some people off. It might actually be more cost effective than you think. For most machines, the typical payback period is just three months. To put this into perspective, this would be the equivalent of completing two re-gas jobs per week over the course of those three weeks. Given the current circumstances and many idle vehicles coming out of their lockdown hibernations – this should be more than achievable over the next few months. With the change in weather and increased temperatures on their way, it’s best not to leave customers with a surprise when it comes to turning systems on in the spring/summer heat. Hybrid and EV

Volvo has committed to making its entire model line-up fully electric by 2030 with Ford becoming the latest carmaker to announce by 2026, 100 percent of Ford’s passenger vehicle range in Europe will be zero- emissions capable, all-electric or plug-in hybrid, and will be completely all-electric by 2030.

Demand for the latest battery electric vehicles (BEV) surged by 228.8% in November 2020, with 4,652 registered in that month alone, while the market for plug-in hybrids rose by 34.8%, (SMMT).

Only 5% of current garages and dealerships are qualified to work on electric vehicles (EVs).

The government strategy is to promote and encourage private buyers and fleets to opt for electric vehicles (EVs) as soon as they can, and by investing £1.3 billion to strengthen the UK’s charging infrastructure to extend the plug-in car grant.

According to SMMT, more than 100 plug-in car models are now available, and manufacturers are scheduled to bring more than 35 to market in 2021, more than the number of either petrol or diesel new models planned for the year.

There are between 13,000 and 20,000 technicians currently working on around 380,000 plug-in cars and vans.
