4.1 Packaging and Labelling

Within this document the terms “Primary Packaging”, “Secondary Packaging” and “Tertiary Packaging” are mentioned on a frequent basis. It is important to clearly understand these phrases and they are explained below.

Primary Packaging is the packaging around the selling unit to the customer.

Secondary Packaging is the packaging around a number of selling units, often referred to as the “outer” or the “carton”.

Tertiary Packaging is the packaging around a number of secondary packs (or outers/cartons).
