The changing MOT pattern presents a huge opportunity for your workshop this winter

The latest ADAC roadside assistance statistics show, nearly 42% of all car breakdowns are caused by a failing battery. Common causes of these failures can be due to the natural rise or decrease in temperatures meaning most drivers now turn the air conditioning on at the highest setting, creating a surge of electricity being used. As well as this, the modern person relies on GPS devices, mobile phone chargers and large colour display screens when using their vehicles that all put a massive strain on batteries. For example, when vehicles are in traffic jams the engine is not producing much power, meaning the alternator can no longer meet the demand for electrical energy.

With cars on your ramps, use this as an opportunity to test every battery that enters your workshop. Not every car will need a battery replaced, but the statistics show though that it could be as high as 1 in 3 vehicles. By testing, you’ve created another benefit for the customer and your workshop. Present your findings good or bad, if it’s good news, it’s a customer service win. If it’s not, it means that the customer has the choice to replace or decline, with 3 out of 4 customers usually taking up the offer of replacement. Checking should take no more than 10 minutes with a standard lead acid battery. Test every vehicle that comes into the workshop September onwards will see a shift in the traditional MOT season due to the 6 month extension imposed by the government last year. This means the traditional curve has changed shape and you should see more MOTs booked between now and the end of the year. Because of this, your workshop will see more vehicles during this period than ever before.

Don’t forget the Start Stop revolution

By 2025 over 80% of vehicles produced will have Start Stop technology, these modernising vehicles need modernised batteries to offset the increased demand for electricity available in the vehicle. Experts have created Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) and Enhanced Flooded Batteries (EFB), designed to outperform traditional flooded batteries which no longer provide the output needed especially for the Start Stop function. In short, the main factors

■ Short Trips ■ Older Vehicles
