In the next couple of months the MOT trend is set to increase, with the UK expecting to see circa 11m MOTs throughout September, October and November – September being the highest with over 4m expected in this month alone. Varta fitting instructions With the increased complexity of battery replacement on newer vehicles and especially Start-Stop models, we have worked closely with VARTA to provide a step-by-step guide. 11 Brand change – Turbojetzt to OPTIMAL AROUND THE ENGINE

After many successful years, Turbojetzt is changing to OPTIMAL.

Why is it changing? The change is to bring LKQ Euro Car Parts in line with our European counterparts so that we have a uniform turbo brand.

Will the warranty change? No, all OPTIMAL Turbo’s will come with a 2 year/24,000 miles no quibble warranty.

Will prices increase? No, OPTIMAL will be very competitively priced, this will give you the opportunity to make a sale without haggling.

What will change? First of all, the packaging will change and show the part number and an OE number where applicable, it will also show the technical helpline number. Is OPTIMAL coming from a new supplier? No, OPTIMAL Turbo’s will still be remanufactured by VEGE, an LKQ Company in Tunisia.

Other changes: The part number will change slightly. For example, part number under Turbojetzt 719590961 will under OPTIMAL become 719590962 with the surcharge Part number also changing from 719590964 in Turbojetzt to 719590968 in OPTIMAL.

The change to OPTIMAL brand will commence in Q4, and the Turbojetzt image boxes will be replaced by OPTIMAL Image boxes, they will be no need to rebox any Turbo’s as the Turbojetzt product will be replaced by OPTIMAL product when the stock is depleted.

Timing belt tensioner warranty claims

We’ve investigated a large number of complaints where the spring or the back plate of the VKM 11278 tensioning pulley was damaged. These tensioning pulley failures caused several engine damages.

The back plate is severely deformed and torn.

The end stops show deformation.

Research and Findings

For the VW range of vehicles, with 1.6 and 2 litre diesel.

Conclusion: • Spring breakage due to abnormal operating conditions with high torsional vibrations, caused by incorrect installation • The tension spring is designed for an oscillation of +/- 3°. This is the oscillation travel that occurs under normal operating conditions and correct adjustment of the tensioning pulley, as well as correct interaction of all belt drive components • Depending on the application, hitting the end stops means an oscillation travel of 30 - 50°! - A tension spring is designed to withstand a certain number of impacts against the end stop, but not for frequent or constant impacts against the end stop.​

During the inspection, SKF did not find any signs of a material or manufacturing defect on the components. The tensioner shows heavy impact marks with material incorporation on both end stops. The nose of the back plate, which moves between the end stops without contact when the tensioner is set correctly, was severely deformed due to frequent and impermissible impact on the end stops.

GOOD TO KNOW

How we address this issue Technical product information sheets are available to support with installation, ensuring mechanics get it right first time. When a customer orders a tensioner – encourage them to read the technical information available.

Several suppliers are experiencing the same issue and looking at ways to tackle the high claims.

Belt drive water pumps

When a customer is changing a timing belt, it’s standard practice these days to change the water pump at the same time if it’s driven by the timing belt. After all, it’s basically just another bearing- based component in the timing drive system, just like the tensioner and idlers - so why wouldn’t you? Remind the customer that if the pump fails, then the chances are that the belt drive will be compromised, resulting in a potentially time-consuming and extremely costly engine failure.

Did you know… As the water pump is driven by the timing belt, it is referred to as a ‘parasitic’ drive component, because it derives power from the timing drive system by nature of its engagement with the belt. By powering the Water Pump using the Timing Belt drive system, engine designers can save space, making for a shorter, more compact engine unit.

INA is extremely careful to select the very best OE manufacturers to produce its water pump range. By ensuring the highest Schaeffler-approved quality standards and offering the same warranty for both the original Timing Belt KITs and our Timing Belt KIT+ (including Water Pump) range.

These same principles apply to the Front End Auxiliary Drive (FEAD) system in applications which feature an Auxiliary Belt driven Water Pump, when best practice would be to replace the pump at the same time as the FEAD belt. For absolute peace of mind, the entire FEAD belt drive system needs to be examined, as it’s not just the belt that is subject to wear, but also the OAP or OAD (Overrunning Alternator Pulley or Decoupler) where fitted, all of the tensioner and idler pulleys, and the TVD (Torsional vibration damper). All of these components are integral to the healthy running of the engine and safety critical FEAD system.

This Premium Synthetic motor oil with ultra-low viscosity has been developed for direct injection (GDI) as well as turbocharged modern petrol engines in hybrid electric vehicles (H.E.V) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (P.H.E.V.) where an SAE 0W-8 is permitted. The very low HTHS (High Temperature High Shear) value (≥ 1.7 mPas) and the low friction properties ensure excellent fuel economy and engine protection in both cold weather conditions and at different engine operating temperatures. This SAE 0W-8 improves a faster oil film build-up when starting the engine. Significantly reduces CO2 emissions. AIR FILTER Myths – BUSTED, with MANN filters

MYTH 1 - Unlike with oil filters, the quality of air filters is not an issue – they are more or less all the same and are not as important for the running of the car. You can opt for the bottom price range without any problem. Wrong! Consider the facts: The importance of the air filter has increased enormously in modern vehicles. Reasons why our customers shouldn’t skimp on this: • Modern engines are becoming increasingly efficient and are therefore making ever higher demands on air filters • With the increase in the air volume passing through the filter, both the load on the air filter and its importance have risen proportionately • An efficient air filter is the basis for optimum fuel combustion • If water enters the air filter housing (because of heavy rain, for example), the correct function of simple air filters can no longer be guaranteed, which leads to a drop in engine power • A flame-retardant impregnation protects both engine and occupants.

MYTH 2 - If I do not keep my car for very long, I do not need to buy MANN-FILTER air filters, which are much more expensive than comparable cheap products. Wrong! Consider the facts: Costs and risks arise at all time even if the latter is only kept for a short time. Reasons why our customers should avoid cheap filters: • Cheap air filters can damage the air mass flow meter sensor, which can soon lead to faulty injection behaviour, considerable loss of power and higher exhaust emissions • Cheaper materials can cause leaking due to brittleness and poor fit. Possible consequence: incorrect messages to the on- board electronics, which often cause considerable damage – and costs • The absence of flame-retardant is dangerous: The ember of a cigarette in contact with the filter medium could cause a fire.

MYTH 3 - Air filters do not necessarily have to be changed at each vehicle inspection. It is enough to clean them or blow them through with compressed air to restore their function. Wrong! Consider the facts: Permanent temperature loading of 80 degrees and temperature peaks of more than 100 degrees can occur at the filter element during vehicle use. Even materials of the highest quality will therefore age and suffer fatigue. Also, any attempt to clean an air filter can have very detrimental effects: • Mechanical stress during the cleaning process can lead to rupture of the pleats – which means the end of the filtration effect • The high cleaning air pressure may destroy the structure of the filter paper, so that the dust holding capacity is reduced • Dirt particles can enter the engine through broken pleats and damaged structures • The reduced holding capacity in turn reduces the service life.

Using OEM-prescribed coolant is just as important as engine oil and a universal coolant does not exist (anymore). More than 8 different types of coolant liquids are already stipulated as a mandatory requirement by car manufacturers. Severe engine damage is often the result of a malfunctioning cooling system due to the use of the wrong coolant. Modern cars with combustion engines are equipped with high-tech, complex cooling systems. Thing to remember when it comes to selling coolant • Only use the coolants specified by the manufacturer • Check the MPM website to find out which coolant fluid is prescribed for which vehicle • There is no universal coolant: encourage garages to be wary of so-called Universal/multi-vehicle coolants • Garages should never mix different types of coolant (there are some exceptions. Always ask MPM for advice in such cases) • Always recommend the replacement of coolant after a leak in the head gasket has been repaired GOOD TO KNOW The importance of using OEM-prescribed coolant Product group: 423

• The colour of the coolant is only an indication of the type of product: it says nothing about quality. For example, some G12+ products are yellow or amber coloured. These can best be topped up with the clear G12+ coolant (86000CBL) to prevent colour deviations. • Asian car brands often prescribe coolants containing hybrid phosphates (86000CLP). Products containing silicate should never be used in that case • G13 coolant contains glycerol. This means they’ll need a special refractometer to read out the frost protection correctly.
