An aging and changing car parc. What does this mean for your workshop? Statistics from the SMMT show that used car market is starting to grow again after a number of years in decline Great news for independent workshops, as this growth will ultimately see more vehicles into your workshops However are you ready for the change in vehicle type is the question? With more EV and Hybrid vehicles changing hands in the used car market, is your workshop equipped to take advantage of this increasing trend?

Training your staff - EV and Hybrid Don’t get left behind when it comes to servicing and repairing hybrid and electric vehicles (EV) With government plans to cut emissions by stopping the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030 and multiple car manufacturers such as Volvo and Ford committing to a 100% electric range by 2030, the change is inevitable There is no doubt that hybrid and EV’s will become the vehicle of choice over the coming years and beyond Through LKQ Academy we can offer training packages that can get your technicians up to speed with EV and Hybrid With courses at a little over

each, your technicians can get all the latest information and practical skills to be able to maintain, replace and diagnose problems that arise with these types of vehicles

Adapting your workshop Charging points, the correct safety equipment, lifting equipment that can take the weight of these heavier vehicles are all required to operate safely If you are considering upgrading your workshop to service this new business, then talk to our experts in the Workshop Solutions team who can help and guide you through the process as you take your business to the next level Find out more

EV & Hybrid ready Hybrid and electric vehicles are at the forefront of many car manufacturers’ agendas • Nissan recently announced their £1billion investment into a new battery factory which has the potential to produce batteries for 100,000 electric vehicles each year • Volvo has committed to making its entire model line-up fully electric by 2030 • Ford promised that 100% of their passenger vehicle range in Europe will be zero emissions, all-electric or plug-in hybrid by 2026 and will be completely all-electric by 2030 • The car parc will continue to change with new marques from the Far East soon to be on the road, these cars may ‘simply retail’ not be supported by dealer group technicians That is a lot of potential custom for your garage but are your technicians trained to deal with this technology?

The perfect spare part for every vehicle

Integral vs two piece: what are the differences Brembo is the global leader in the design and manufacturing of high-performance braking systems, one of their key strengths is that they have complete control over the production process This enables them to maintain a consistent level of quality, minimise any potential defects and guarantee reliable, durable spare parts backed by an extensive warranty

Lightweight The steel/ aluminum hat guarantees about a 15%-30% reduction in the weight of the disc, compared to a standard disc of the same size

Difference in tolerances To further reduce the weight of the disc, the steel hub is manufactured to a thickness of just 2 5 mm compared to the standard 8mm Do not swap The integral disc will add 6 5mm more thickness to the disc hat compared to the original “Two Piece” disc This will decrease the thread engagement of the wheel bolt and alter the clamping load

High-carbon cast iron braking surface

Co-cast steel hat

Do not swap The standard disc adds up to

15%-30% more weight than the original “Two Piece” disc Increasing the weight of the unsprung mass and affecting stability

Technical tips from Brembo

Handle with care

Additional fitting instructions What has changed? • Pre-fitment Handling • Handle with care • Do not pick up by the hat • Removal • Do not use Air tools • Remove bolts following the star sequence • Cleaning the hub • To ensure fitment within lateral tolerance

• Fitment handling • Avoid turning the axle by the disc or caliper • Post-fitment Handling • Tighten the bolts following the star sequence • Use a torque wrench to tighten by 75Nm initially • Final torque following vehicle manufacturer setting • Additional items to note • Only use Original Equipment wheel rims

Is you customer looking for an improved performance?

Brembo Xtra brake pads have been specifically engineered to complement the benefits of Brembo’s drilled and slotted discs They’re the perfect choice for sports driving enthusiasts that don’t want to compromise on comfort and durability during everyday road use By utilising a specially designed compound called BRM X L01, Brembo Xtra brake pads reduce the amount of friction material used during braking, resulting in less brake dust To eliminate the risk of brake fade when under pressure, Brembo’s new Xtra brake pads undergo a scorching treatment This process significantly increases the brake pad’s resistance to fade, ensuring consistent performance even in the most demanding driving situations Limited disc wear is expected under all driving conditions

Subframes

“A highly stressed component should be rejected if corrosion has resulted in serious reduction in the overall thickness of the material or has caused a hole or split. Welded repairs to highly stressed components are not normally acceptable. To pass, the repair should appear to be as strong as the original design.” A welded repair would only be acceptable according to the guide is: • Repairs to structural components must be properly carried out and appear to be as strong as the original structure. This requires the use of suitable materials and any plating or welding extends to a sound part of a load- bearing member. • You can only pass spot welded repairs if the original panel was spot welded and the original panel or section has been removed. • Stitch or plug welding can be used instead of spot welding. In all other circumstances, patch repairs must be continuously seam welded. • Some vehicle manufacturers have recommended repair methods that use MIG brazing, a combination of adhesive bonding and riveting, or amalgamations of these with other joining methods.

There are generally three basic forms of the subframe. 1. A simple "axle" type which usually carries the lower control arms and steering rack.

The purposes of a subframe are to spread high chassis loads over a wide area of relatively thin sheet metal of a monocoque body shell and to isolate vibrations and harshness from the rest of the body. In a car, with its powertrain contained in a subframe, forces generated by the engine and transmission can be dampened enough that they will not disturb passengers. As a natural development from a car with a full chassis, separate front and rear subframes are used in modern vehicles to reduce the overall weight and cost.

To fix the problem would normally require the frame to be removed and then repaired so an aftermarket product here would be beneficial plus it will be the considerably cheaper and longer lasting option to a repair of an already heavily corroded frame.

What causes subframes to fail?

Our Starline products use OE spec or better material and, in cases where the possibility of corrosion is extreme, we increase the thickness of the plating and add additional drain holes and points. Starline offers a range of over 150 front and rear subframes for popular vehicle marques such as BMW, Citroen, Ford, Mercedes, VW and many more available on demand.

6% MOT Failure Rate Source: DVSA

2. A perimeter frame which carries the components in box 1 but in addition supports the engine.

In a word – corrosion. 99% of subframe components are made from pressed streel plates welded together. All subframes have drain holes, however this doesn’t allow for any form of effective cleaning and leads to a heavy build up of dirt, road grime and salt. This material can rot the frame from the inside.

Beam Axles

All the corrosion shown in the image has happened due to the road and weather conditions. The MOT check needs to be thorough as this can be easily missed. The best way to check is round the drain holes in the frame, taking special attention to the areas of the frame where multiple layers of the steel meet and are welded together.

3. A perimeter frame which carries the components in box 1 and 2 but in addition supports the engine, transmission. (Front wheel drive cars)

Offer Your Customer

A beam axle, rigid axle or solid axle is a dependent suspension design in which a set of wheels is connected laterally by a single beam or shaft. Historically they have also been used as front axles in four-wheel-drive vehicles. In most cars, beam axles have been replaced with front and rear independent suspensions. Starline offer a range of over 100 rear axles which offer a solution where changing the complete axle is a much better than changing a worn bush. For PSA vehicles, changing the internal axle shafts and bearings requires specialist tools and a complete disassembly and rebuild of the axle. There is also no guarantee the repair will last, so changing the entire item is a much better way to go.

• Corrosion is the biggest cause of subframe failure (And MOT Failure) • Replacing the subframe is often the cheaper and safer option than repair • Starline offers a range of over 150 subframes and 100 rear axles.

When found the corroded part needs to be replaced and the only option is a new replacement. The average cost from a main dealer can be in excess of £600, and then other fitting costs can easily raise the cost of completing the job to over £1000. The subframe cannot normally be welded or repaired as they subframes are high stress components.

Starline also offer a range of Subframes and Beam Axles. With a large range to cover off most needs these are available same day and next day.

Around the wheel Pothole perils and the future of wheel bearing repairs The condition of roads has a huge impact on critical components, including wheel bearings However, it isn’t just road conditions that can affect this safety critical component It wasn’t that many years ago that 17 inch wheels were considered large, but today many cars are sporting a set of huge 20 to 22 inch rims, with 23 inches also now available

12

Larger diameter wheels have the effect of amplifying the vibration and lateral forces that wheels are subjected to in normal operation, putting additional stress on the hub bearings and other related suspension components This is why the current trend for vehicle designers is to specify the latest complete hub unit designs, which are much stiffer and therefore better able to absorb road shocks and steering forces

It’s no wonder FAG wheel bearings are selected time and time again as the original equipment choice of many of the world’s leading vehicle manufacturers What this means is that the same part installed in the factory is made available to independent workshops via the aftermarket distribution network, and with Schaeffler’s ‘complete repair solution’ philosophy, all the OE ancillary components you need to carry out a professional wheel bearing replacement will be in the box – right down to the last nut, bolt and washer

More and more electric cars are entering the market, which can be up to 30% heavier than their internal combustion engine (ICE) counterparts This extra weight puts higher demands on the chassis, which means that latest and future generations of wheel bearings will need to be even stronger, using increasingly sophisticated designs and high-tech materials, maybe even ceramics, as well as being insulated from electrical currents It’s a whole new ball game - as Schaeffler’s newTrifinity bearing demonstrates Looking ahead to the future Trifinity is a state-of-the-art, fully optimised three-row angular contact ball bearing that offers significantly higher stiffness and longer service life when compared to conventional double-row ball bearings Its ingenious design makes it possible to accommodate higher axle loads while reducing bearing friction by up to 53%, all in a smaller, lighter package

Advantages

Increased driving performance • 33% improved stiffness

Robust fabrication • Designed to last the life of the vehicle • Optimised sealing performance

Modular design • 24% greater load capacity vs standard design • Downsizing solution offers further friction reduction vs standard design

53% less friction • Balances load distribution • Optimised raceway design • Friction-optimised grease

Lighter weight • Helps maximise electric vehicle range • Helps minimise CO 2 emissions in ICE vehicles

“Charge Up” your workshop for battery season There are plenty of opportunities for a workshop to upsell or gain extra revenue, no more so than batteries Batteries eventually fail – simple Checking a customer’s battery should be part of the service you offer, if it’s working then great, you can give the customer the good news, if not then recommend the next course of action We have been promoting for the last couple of years the importance of battery testing, but did you know what can make a battery fail and why a simple test can be preventative for your customer

Weather conditions Hot and cold weather both stress a battery In the warmer weather it can cause cells to crack, the colder weather will exaggerate these failures, meaning poor or non performance (Cranking power)

Short journeys and lowmileage Both of these will put huge amounts of stress through a battery, being undercharged for any period of time will effect the condition of the battery, leading to poor performance

Battery corrosion Battery corrosion over time will affect the how the battery will maintain a charge and eventually the ability to start the vehicle Always look for corrosion and test

Batteries

AGM Technology

YEARS 3 WARRANTY

Improved starting performance

Leak proof

Excellent charge acceptance

Greater deep cycle resistance

Maintenance free

AGM is the leading technology in the market for the most exacting requirements. AGM batteries are engineered to cope with the excess heat created by regenerative braking and the continuous on/off action of the Stop-Start system. Importantly they power the electrics when the engine is in “sleep mode”, at traffic lights or stuck in jams. Only ever replace AGM with AGM or it will fail prematurely.

New to Range 3 newAGM batteries that cover: Lexus IS, Mitsubishi PHEV, Toyota Auris, Lexus RX, Toyota Estima, Toyota Yaris.

EFB Technology

YEARS 3 WARRANTY

Longer service life

Improved starting performance

Leak proof

Outstanding charge acceptance

Greater deep cycle resistance

Maintenance free

EFB technology satisfies requirements that lie somewhere between conventional starter batteries and AGM technology. Like AGM, EFB batteries power the electrics when the engine is in “sleep mode”. They ensure that sufficient energy is always available, even when a large number of energy consumers are operating during the stop phase. Only ever replace EFB with EFB, or it will fail prematurely.

Timing belt change recommendations:

Schaeffler is a leading supplier of Timing belt kits, under the INA brand, and they go to extreme lengths to ensure that each kit contains all the OE quality parts required to carry out a full Timing Belt service, which means that many now also include a Water Pump to guarantee a complete and professional repair information provider additional information section But exactly what constitutes ‘Arduous conditions’? In simple terms, it can be anything which places additional load on the Timing Belt drive system, either by increased weight, higher temperatures, or increased mileage, especially in a reduced period of time, to name but a few One area which is often ignored is the use of the phrase ‘Arduous conditions’, which is again mentioned in your service

Some official documented examples of ‘Arduous conditions’ are shown below:

• High Speed Driving- Sustained high speed driving also increases the load placed upon the timing system • Towing a trailer or caravan - Once all the comforts of home have been added to a caravan’s weight, many of them become overloaded and add immense pressures on the whole engine and drive train, which of course has a direct effect on the life of the Timing Belt drive system

• Taxis / Hire Cars - The most obvious are Taxis, which are subjected to high mileage driving, often doing many repetitive short journeys over a long period of time - i e day and night shifts • Delivery Vans - The COVID pandemic led to a massive shift to online purchases, all of which need to be delivered by someone in a van These vehicles are carrying out door-to-door deliveries sometimes

numbering in the hundreds each day, adding an extreme load to the timing drive system • Overloading - You only have to look in any hotel car park to see how many over-loaded vans are parked up there for the night Extra weight means extra load on the engine, which leads to increased load and wear on the Timing Belt system and associated components

Smarter climate protection – new compound for timing belts More and more brands are recognising the importance of incorporating sustainability practices into their operation with customers becoming increasingly conscious of environmental impacts Continental are on a mission to help fight climate change and protect the environment with a ‘less is more’ and ‘climate protection’ approach Introducing their brand new timing belt which combines optimised technical properties with a 50% reduction in CO2 emission The belt’s profile side is not made from the usual polychloroprene, but from a new and patented synthetic rubber compound offering a host of benefits for the environment and climate The actual raw materials used have a far lower global warming potential, while the new compound’s carbon footprint – from manufacture to the belt’s disposal – is around 50% smaller There are some appealing advantages on the technical side too, as the new timing belts enable higher levels of power transmission and also offer improved resistance to cold and heat Less is more – new packaging With 70% less packaging – not only will customers be helping to combat climate change, but they will also have more room on their shelves Previously, the individual components of these kits (belt, water pump, tensioner pulleys, etc ) were packed in separate boxes, which were then placed together in a large outer box In future, a specially folded cardboard insert will protect all components and keep them safely in place within the box without the need for individual packaging

Benefits include: • Uses less space – halves the amount of carboard needed • Helps the climate – 70% more kits will fit on one pallet • Reduces waste – although the material is recyclable, there will be less to dispose of

• Safer working environment – less clutter • Less CO2 = more satisfied customers

Always check the timing belt on the Ford 1.0-litre EcoBoost ‘Fox’ when servicing the vehicle.

the contaminated oil has begun to degrade the surface of the belt

The Ford 1 0-litre EcoBoost ‘Fox’ engine is used in multiple applications and according to the manufacturer’s service schedule, the timing belt replacement period is 140,000 -150,000 miles or every 10 years, whichever comes soonest However, leaving a belt for this amount of time, may have consequences to the engine Here are some best practice guidelines that technicians can follow to help them assess the condition of the belt in between the specified replacement interval

“At this point it’s important to state that some moderate

increase in the width of the belt, commonly referred to as belt swell, is not an issue If it’s excessive it will cause the belt to foul, but this will be evident if there is damage to its edges Use the Dayco “Timing Belt in oil checking gauge for Eco Boost engine”, this handy little tool will tell you instantly if the belt has swelled excessively and needs changing

Assess the condition of the oil.

Petrol in the oil, it’s generally noticeable due to its strong odour, whenever carrying out a scheduled oil and filter change technicians should check for the smell of petrol fumes

FORD ECOBOOST ENGINE

If detected, further investigation must be made as the failure of the belt will have catastrophic consequences to the engine A sensible starting point is to check the strainer that the oil will have passed through when draining from the sump, it’s possible that fragments of the belt will have been dislodged as the fuel attacks the belt material If debris is found, the next step is to remove the camshaft cover to assess the belt’s condition Examine the back of the belt this will reveal whether
