The importance of catalytic converters

Due to the strict guidelines now in place with regards to emissions, catalytic converters can cause vehicles to fail NCT tests when not functioning correctly. There are several reasons that can cause a catalytic converter to fail: ■ Incorrect fuel/air mix – catalytic converters can become contaminated with unburnt fuel causing the engine to run poorly, this needs to be rectified before fitting a new cat ■ Damaged or broken monolith (ceramic substrate inside the cat casing) ■ Lambda sensor functioning correctly ■ Cat is blocked - incorrect fuel used ■ Unsuitable fuel additives engine problems.

Good practice Always change the lambda sensors when replacing a catalytic converter.
