CHECKING BRAKE HOSES AS PART OF VISUAL NCT CHECKS WHEN CHECKING BRAKES AND CALIPERS

There are some things you should look out for when checking brake hoses, such as:

A new hose wouldn’t have any of the below signs; ■ Be hard/stiff in the material ■ Be soft/weak ■ Expand under pressure. When the mechanics are doing their checks it would be a great idea to pump the brake pedal, with another colleague looking at the hoses, to see if there are any visible leaks. Don’t let your customers fail their NCT – replace the handbrake cable LKQ Euro Car Parts and Pagid recommend you replace the handbrake cable when: ■ Rope and sheath are damaged, jeopardising the item’s efficiency by decreasing its braking capacity ■ Rubber parts are damaged (flexible gaters etc), as this would ease the penetration of external agents, like impurities or water, that would eventually hinder the smoothness of the product ■ The vehicle has spent excessive time driving on roads covered by road salt, causing erosion of parts of the cable, affecting its performance. Why Change Brake Shoe Fitting Kits? Old parts increase the risk of: ■ Brake noise (the brake shoes rattle) ■ Uneven and disproportionate load on the brake shoes cause risk of damaging the drum ■ Can affect the brake efficiency of the brakes ■ Lost spring tension and pull effect. Before change

■ Cracks ■ Chafing ■ Bulging ■ Expanding ■ Leaking ■ Twisting.

It is important to check the brake hoses when the car is having it’s service/NCT, because of the safety critical component that it is. The brake hose needs to be intact for it to be functioning 100%. A good place to start when checking brake hoses, is to look out for the 6 key points mentioned above, none of these signs should occur on the fitted brake hoses. Should you see any of those signs, the brake hoses should be changed.

The above is what they should look for, but there is also something you should feel out for.

Don’t forget to change…

Why Change Brake Pad Fitting Kits? Old parts increase the risk of: ■ Brake noise (brake pads and bolts rattle) ■ Uneven and disproportionate load on the brake disc ■ Uneven braking can affect the brake efficiency of the brakes ■ Significantly reduced spring force.

Spring tension before change

It’s recommended you change the parts when changing brake pads. This is to ensure an even braking ability function and efficiency of the brakes.

It is therefore recommended you change the parts when changing brake shoes. This is to ensure an even braking ability function and efficiency of the brakes.
