Air Con in Hybrid and Electric vehicles Air-conditioning systems on Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (EV’s) cars aren’t just necessary for a cold, comfortable cabin. EV air-conditioning systems are also essential in ensuring the electric motors, batteries and axles remain cool. Electric car components get very hot when in use and could overheat and fail without a fully operational and well maintained air-conditioning system. What air-con gas is used for Hybrid and EV’s?

You may be wondering what air-con gas is suitable to use on a Hybrid or EV? There are things we need to consider before re-gasing an air-con system on an electric vehicle however the type of gas needed is likely to be determined on when the car was manufactured as opposed to whether it’s an EV. As most electric cars have been manufactured in the last 4 years you’ll probably need the new generation air-con gas R1234YF. Hybrid cars manufactured before 2018 may still require the traditional R134A gas.

Electric car PAG oil Using the correct PAG oil is essential when re-gasing a Hybrid or EV air-conditioning system. If the incorrect PAG oil was used then there’s a risk is could conduct high voltage to the compressor case or connected components. This could potentially lead to damage to components and even electric shock. This is why all our air-conditioning equipment uses a universal PAG oil in every re-gas. Universal PAG oil is suitable for both R1234A & R134YF gas and is suitable to use on both Hybrid and Electric cars

Signs of decreasing range in an EV

Range decreases as the air con refrigerant becomes lower. The aircon system has to work harder to cool the air in the cabin. This extra work uses more power and reduces an EV’s range.

More condensation starts to appear on windows

Replacing cabin filters on an electric car? Electric cars have far less filters than a conventional car which means servicing is much simpler than it is for a petrol or diesel powered vehicles. However, one very important filter they do still need is the cabin filter. Electric vehicle manufacturers usually recommend you change the cabin filter every 2 years.

WHAT IS TPMS? Tyre Pressure Monitoring Sensor (TPMS) is a system to monitor tyre pressure inside tyres. TPMS was introduced into European mass production during a phase-in period between 2012-2014. A TPMS sensor (OE) has a designed life of about 7 years or 100,000 km (60,000 miles).

There are currently two types of TPMS systems: 1) Direct TPMS T his system is made up of a sensor mounted inside the tyre transmitting data to the vehicle and showing warnings to the consumer. 2) Indirect TPMS T his system uses the ABS sensor to approximate the tyre pressure and alert the consumer.

• There is a requirement within law to keep the systems fitted to cars after 2012 operational as they are part of the annual MOT/NCT tests ​ • To maximise the life span of the sensor it should be serviced anytime the tyre is dismounted.

Hydraulic steering system

WARRANTY

Starline Hydraulic steering racks are ISO certified and they are remanufactured to exacting standards to retain the original OE performance. Once all our Hydraulic steering racks are stripped down, all the seals are replaced with OE equivalent parts. To ensure that quality is guaranteed, all our units are tested 100% throughout the remanufacturing process, before being signed off as good as new.

The main reasons for flushing the system on all power steering systems is that the fluid becomes contaminated during regular use, and the contamination will cause premature failure of hydraulic seals under pressure.

• Units are Pressure and flow tested using simulated road conditions to ensure perfect functionality • Painted with anti-corrosion paint to protect from the elements to prolong the life

• Research & development and all testing are done inhouse • Quality controlled from end to end.

Always refer to the manufacturer’s specifications to establish the correct fuid required. In order for the replacement of a new steering rack or pump the be a success, you must pour fresh hydraulic steering fuid into the reservoir so it fushes through the whole steering system, WITHOUT LETTING IT RUN DRY. Then, once the fuid runs clear, the new rack or pump can be successfully fitted. All steering racks and pumps come with fitting instructions – thoroughly read the instructions before fitting a new rack or pump. Hydraulic Steering Systems – flushing criteria

FREE Repxpert ASB Sensor Card An invaluable free* tool for LKQ Euro Car Parts customers The vast majority of wheel bearings currently fitted as Original Equipment (OE) are classed as “Active Sensor Bearings”, which contain a special magnetic sensor ring integrated into the seal.

This sensor ring provides valuable speed data to the ECU which is used to manage the wide range of safety critical electronic assistance devices fitted to a modern vehicles, such as ABS, traction control, and cruise control for example. However, it is not really possible to visually check if the bearing you have been supplied is fitted with an encoder within the seal. As we’ve already said, the sensor ring is magnetic, and it is common place for mechanics to check if the seal contains a sensor ring by holding a screwdriver against it. However – a word of warning!… Many screwdrivers are magnetic and can cause damage to the sensor if it comes into contact.

Concentric Slave Cylinders: The Dirty Secret

For Schaeffer Technical Manager and Senior REPXPERT Alistair Mason, an everyday occurrence is to overhear technical phone calls or see inspections being carried out on returned LuK Concentric Slave Cylinders (CSC). This has allowed him to identify one particular issue that is rarely discussed, but which affects every type of CSC for every vehicle application. The dirty secret is: Contamination. Schaeffer now has more CSCs returned with contamination related failure than are returned with signs of being over-pressurised during installation, the previous number one cause of premature failure. So, what is causing this? It could be low cost or even missed servicing, ignoring recommended fuid changes, and of course, lower mileage or dormant vehicles due to the new working practices caused by COVID hasn’t helped. Contamination, put simply, means that the clutch fuid has become become old, polluted, and discoloured. It attracts moisture, guide tube debris, and who knows what else could be in there! When fitting a new CSC some installers will happily pump this contaminated fuid into the new cylinder, therefore contaminating and shocking the new seal. As a result the seal starts to swell (see picture lower right), leading to inevitable failure, usually 1000+ miles after the CSC was replaced, although failure can occur earlier in extreme cases. The question to ask yourself is “do you know the history of the clutch fuid you are draining?” It is also worth bearing in mind that the usual vehicle manufacturer’s recommendation, and also that of component manufacturers, is to change the hydraulic fuid every two years. The way to avoid a contamination related failure is clear: Drain, fush and refill the clutch fuid every time you install a new CSC. Doing this five-minute job correctly could prevent a disgruntled customer returning for yet another CSC. Please don’t get caught out!

Water Pumps – Technical Update

The availability of this hugely popular pump has been limited in the aftermarket since 2020, mainly due to factory closures during COVID and ongoing supply chain issues. These issues have resulted in Schaeffer, Airtex and other suppliers improving and redesigning the water pump – one that isn’t supplied with solenoid. The pump itself does not appear to have evolved much in the last eight years since we started seeing these in the aftermarket, which is frustrating to many, as we hear reports of the three-shaft shroud mechanism jamming prematurely, often resulting in an early replacement.

Why not a water pump with built-in solenoid? All engine parts that work dynamically, i.e. in motion, have a much higher wear than the others and are normally assembled / connected with other parts that we usually call accessories. We are talking about screws, caps, nuts, washers, pulleys, tubes, terminals, etc. In the case of the solenoid, it is very easy to disconnect and reconnect on the new pump. Just unscrew a small set screw and screw it back in when replacing the new pump. When the vehicle arrives at a workshop to replace the water pump, we can reuse the solenoid fitted to the car (as long as it is in good condition and working correctly), thus saving costs and being environmentally responsible.

In this article we’ve tried to debunk some oil myths and why our customers should be offering the right oil for the right job.

Many competitor oils at a similar trade price claim their oils cover a range of specifications and a wide car parc. This couldn’t be further than the truth, and could be somewhat misleading to our customers. Oils are all constructed in the same way, they have a base oil, and then they have an additives pack, this helps them get specified by vehicle manufacturers and get recommendations for use. There can only be a couple of reasons why the price of an oil is cheap: 1. Lesser quality base oil 2. Not as many additives are added. We have looked at a popular type of oil, in the example table we are focusing on 5W 30, a grade that most garages would use. However when we compare MPM and Triple QX to Competitor A, we now start to see the differences of how our oils are made up, what approvals and recommendations they have, and importantly the coverage.
