MEASURE AND FIT THE CORRECT BELT DRIVE How to identify the correct Poly-V belt The best way to identify the correct Poly-V belt is to look at the number of ribs the belt has, along with the length of the belt. The supplier reference for Poly-V belts is made up of: ■ Number of ribs ■ Generic belt section – for automotive it is “PK” ■ External length of the belt in mm. Poly-V belt Part number example: 6PK1750 Part number example: 6PK1750 6 PK 1750 External length (mm)
ARE YOU CHECKING DRIVE BELTS AS PART OF A SERVICE?
Auxiliary drive belts are subject to constant thermal and contaminant exposure which highlights the importance of routine inspection of belt components. This is often overlooked by both vehicle owners and automotive professionals.
Why should you visually inspect a belt drive? A visual inspection of these components during a vehicle service or MOT is often enough to determine whether a drive belt replacement is needed and ensures that a vehicle does not experience a belt failure while in motion. LKQ Euro Car Parts recommends that any service or MOT includes the visual inspection of auxiliary drive belts to ensure that components can be replaced prior to failure. It is also best practice to replace drive belts when replacing components within the same serpentine system. Benefits for your customer Checking the belt drive as part of an MOT or service means that you can give your customers peace of mind whether that means informing them that the components have been checked and are in working order, or to advise the parts will require changing. Either way, it's a win-win. Letting your customer know you've checked the components shows your willingness to go above and beyond, securing their loyalty and future proofing their return business. And if the parts need replacing? Then
Belt section (Automotive)
For example: a belt has four ribs. The reference will therefore start with: 4 + PK. Measure the belt and if the length is 895 mm the supplier reference will be: 4 + PK + 895 = 4PK895 How to identify the correct V belt The best way to identify the correct V belt is to look at the width and at the length of the belt. Depending on the brand, the supplier reference for V belts is made up of: Dayco ■ Top width in mm ■ Generic belt section – for automotive it is “A” ■ External length of the belt in mm ■ Generic belt feature – for the belts with teeth it is “C”. Contitech ■ Generic belt section – for Automotive it is “AV” ■ Top width in mm ■ External length of the belt in mm ■ Use “x” between the generic section, the width and the length. For example: if the belt size is 10mm wide and 1085mm long, the Dayco refrence will be 10 + A + 1085 + C = 10A1085C. The Contitech refrence will be AV x 10 x 1085 = AVX10X1085.

THE IMPORTANCE OF CHANGING WATER PUMPS WITH TIMING BELT KITS
Technicians usually change timing belts when they have reached their duty cycle through time, mileage, or arduous conditions. It is best practice to change driveline components at the same time as the belt. The water pump, when driven by the timing belt, is just another bearing in the timing system and it is recommended to replace the water pump when renewing the timing belt components. If the timing belt fails, whether due to simple age, or the failure of a tension pulley or bearing, the water pump will likely fail along with it. Benefits to your customer If you don’t change the water pump with the timing belt the likelihood is the water pump will fail. This will probably incur another trip to the garage for the customer, but not necessarily yours. Retain a customer and fit both together! LKQ Euro Car Parts stock a comprehensive range of INA and Dayco water pump kits to meet the market requirement for a complete timing system repair solution.

THE DANGER OF NOT SUPPLYING THE CORRECT DRIVE BELT
CLICK HERE TO FIND OUT MORE
It is very important to supply the correct belt, made from the right material. A lot of Volvo applications use belts made of Kevlar. If a normal belt made of Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) is supplied, it wouldn’t be able to cope with the power and the vibrations of the engine causing it to break and therefore meaning a lot of expensive damage. The Kevlar belts can be identified by having the letter “K” at the end. The elastic belts can be identified by having the letters “EE” (for Dayco) or “ELAST” (for Contitech) at the end.

BRAKE CALIPERS EXCLUSIVE TO LKQ EURO CAR PARTS
WHY PAGID?
Technical leaders The Pagid name is synonymous with technical excellence. For more than 60 years, they have been at the forefront of innovation in brake friction. Every year, over £25million is invested in product research and development. This means that they are continually bringing new and better solutions – helping vehicle manufacturers to meet the ever increasing challenges of performance, sustainability and automation, and supporting the aftermarket with the latest OE specification products. Pagid was acquired in 2002 by TMD Friction who are one of the global leaders in braking friction technology. Exclusive to LKQ Euro Car Parts, Pagid is the OEM brand for you. Tested to the highest standards Every Pagid friction product meets ECE R90 – the benchmark European quality standard for brake friction. Pagid go much further to ensure maximum safety. With a worldwide team of 300 test engineers and technicians. Every friction formulation undergoes a rigorous testing programme that takes into account vehicle performance, loads, driving speeds and conditions –this includes 1,000 hours on a dynamometer, and 300,000 km of real-life road testing.
Pagid brake calipers are remanufactured to OE quality standards which means they will be returned to as near the same condition as possible to the original part. After the casting is cleaned, inspected, and plated, the caliper is rebuilt using new components, including new pistons and seals. Unlike cheaper ‘reconditioning’ options (which could just be cleaned and rebuilt using the old worn parts), every Pagid caliper undergoes quality control at each stage and must pass a final pressure test at the end of the line before it can be approved and released for sale. With a 24 month or 24,000 miles warranty, you can’t go wrong. With vehicle usage being down and the cold weather earlier in the year, this can cause problems for brake calipers. The flexibility and efficiency of the caliper seals (in particular the outer piston seal and the inner D Cut seal) can deteriorate due to the lack of movement and salt from the road. This combination can cause inefficiencies with the caliper performance - in some cases the piston may not release, causing the brakes to bind or, in the common fist type caliper, cause the sliders to stop working due to perished seals. This prevents the caliper from sliding as they are designed to do. Pagid and LKQ Euro Car Parts recommend an inspection of the efficient function of the caliper over the coming weeks to ensure 100% customer satisfaction each time.

THE IMPORTANCE OF REPLACING SHOCKS AND SPRINGS IN PAIRS
DON’T COMPROMISE ON QUALITY WHEN IT COMES TO DRIVESHAFTS, JOINT KITS AND BOOT KITS
Brake pads and discs are always replaced in pairs to make sure the brake system can work properly. The same approach must be used for suspension components as they can’t function correctly if replaced in singles. Additional your revenue can increase when replacing in pairs.
GKN Driveline is by far the world’s largest automotive driveline technology and systems engineer; designing, developing, manufacturing and integrating the most extensive range of driveline technologies. 90% of global vehicle manufacturers choose GKN, with almost 50% of new cars worldwide featuring GKN automotive systems and solutions. The brand supplies the automotive aftermarket with leading OE manufacturing and use the most modern OE joint technology in the independent replacement market. GKNs range includes driveshafts, joint and boot kits for European, Japanese and (most) Korean car models. Q-Drive is LKQ Euro Car Parts own aftermarket brand, sourced from global manufacturers known for quality component production to internationally recognised standards TS16949, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. A great value option in the aftermarket with Q-Drive products coming with a minimum 12-month (or 12,000 mile) warranty. What can we offer? ■ Driveshafts – large range and ready to fit ■ CV joint kits – great product range which comes with everything you need to complete the repair in one go ■ Boot kits – complete range of OE application specific parts.
The risks Replacing springs in pairs is not only best practice but also puts the customers safety first. By replacing singularly you run the risk of the following issues: ■ Less responsive steering ■ Increased braking distances ■ Reduced levels of comfort when driving ■ Increased tyre wear ■ Increased levels of cost in the long run, having to replace further down the line could then cost more with further damage and issues ■ Vehicle imbalance as one side of the vehicle is higher than the other
This will in turn give your customers confidence in knowing you are providing a quality service for them. As well as this, the customer is also seeing a cost saving by buying in pairs, a cheaper labour rate as they’ve had both replaced simultaneously and ultimately their vehicle will spend less time off the road. Increasing your revenue ■ Carry out visual inspections when singular parts are requested to identify any imperfections ■ Encourage customers to replace springs in pairs, just as they would with brake pads or discs ■ Advise customers of any spring issues, even if they may not yet be at the point where MOT failure would be likely. ■ It is recommended to replace the top strut mount when changing shocks and springs

GARAGE SERVICES – WHEEL ALIGNMENT
Why do you need wheel alignment? Most sources recommend an alignment service every 10,000 miles; one to three years; with each new set of tyres; or when replacing steering and suspension components. It only takes ten minutes to perform a wheel alignment check and It is estimated that one in five cars coming into a workshop will have an alignment issue. On average every fourteenth check will highlight vehicle issues which will require additional parts and labour work to be carried out.
Leading suppliers of components for the independent automotive aftermarket, Corteco supply over 26,000 OEM quality products. Under the Freudenberg Group, the brand benefits from extensive OE manufacturing for more than 27,000 types of vehicles. All products are manufactured using the latest production methods and designed to meet the highest quality standards.

Choose Corteco suspension strut mounts which are available in kits including axle bearing. Comprising on quality could mean reduced driving comfort and a strain on the whole suspension system. Suspension strut mounts are designed to ensure vehicle occupants are protected from any impact caused by speed bumps and potholes. The mounts act as a damper and isolate excess noise and vibrations making them essential to vehicle stability and road safety.
WHEEL ALIGNMENT
What are the symptoms of a damaged strut mount?
■ Regular wheel alignment checks are recommended ■ If you replace steering or suspension components ■ If you replace tyres ■ One in five vehicles will require alignment.
■ Replacement indicators ■ Loose, stiff, or noisy steering ■ Vibrations
■ Poor steering return ■ Roll, sway, slide, or bounce while cornering or driving on winding roads ■ Increased stopping distance.

The government strategy is to promote and encourage private buyers and fleets to opt for electric vehicles (EVs) as soon as they can, and by investing £1.3 billion to strengthen the UK’s charging infrastructure to extend the plug-in car grant.
According to SMMT, more than 100 plug-in car models are now available, and manufacturers are scheduled to bring more than 35 to market in 2021, more than the number of either petrol or diesel new models planned for the year.
There are between 13,000 and 20,000 technicians currently working on around 380,000 plug-in cars and vans.
ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING CABLES We all know by now that from 2030 electric vehicles will be a part of our lives. But the demand for electric and hybrid vehicles is already starting to show with sales increasing significantly in 2020 despite the challenges from the pandemic. The frequency of vehicle charging points is also greater which creates an increase in demand for charging cables. Vehicle owners may want an extra cable for their car or their existing one might get lost or stolen. At LKQ Euro Car Parts, we have a wide range of type 1 and 2 charging cables to suit a range of vehicles. Whether it’s for a Nissan, Toyota, Audi or Porsche, you name it, we have got it. Next time your customers’ vehicle is in the workshop, ask them if they have a suitable charging cable. If they don’t, we are on hand to supply one. So, what are the benefits of the cables we supply? ■ IP54 rated ■ Impact resistant (they are ‘run over’ proof) ■ 15,000 mating cycles ■ ** 16amp Charger Cable 3G2.5 + 2 x 0.5mm ■ ** 32amp Charger Cable 3G6.0 + 2 x 0.5mm ■ CE and TUV approved ■ Two-year guarantee. GARAGE SERVICES - HYBRID & ELECTRIC The growing popularity of electric and hybrid cars; signifies an urgent need for workshops and technicians to undergo specific training before carrying out maintenance, servicing or repair work. There are many risks associated with the high voltage electrical systems. Cars like a Tesla Model S, are crammed with high-voltage components, including the 400-volt battery, as well as drive units, high-voltage cabling, charging points and converter units.
FIVE ESSENTIAL CHECKS ON EXHAUST SYSTEMS:
1. Assess the level of corrosion on components and avoid a costly breakdown 2. Check for failed parts to prevent an MOT failure
3. Always check exhaust mounts 4. Know how to handle DPF issues 5. Check Adblue to prevent future issues and add value.

TESTING FOR SALES
PROVIDING AN EXTRA SERVICE
While any vehicle is on your ramp there are several checks you could be doing.
Statistics say 50% of vehicles entering your workshop will require replacement wipers. Testing and fitting wiper blades on a vehicle should only take five minutes, and the benefits of such a quick task can be huge. If you have ten vehicles in your workshop each day, five of those are likely to need the wipers changing.
Batteries The change in weather and minimal use over the last 12-months, means more common faults with car batteries. When checking batteries, we advise to not only do a visual check, but also a physical examination to test the output. Testing the output can be done with a simple testing tool and helps predict the estimated battery life so you can highlight any potential issues in the future and advise a customer to replace before it becomes an issue.
Air Con Systems need replacing more than you may think. With the change in weather and increased temperatures on their way, it’s best not to leave customers with a surprise when it comes to turning systems on in the spring/ summer heat. Testing systems isn’t always something that every garage offers, so can help set you apart when it comes to going the extra mile for your customers.
Bulbs Double checking all bulbs around the car (including internal bulbs) not only helps identify problems a customer never knew they had, but it can also lead to increased revenue for you. A quick “did you know your bulb was out? Do you want me to replace it while it’s here?” not only helps to keep customer vehicles safe, but it also means they don’t have to go elsewhere for a simple repair in the future.
Wipers A lot of customers think wipers only break from overuse – which isn’t always the case. Not using wipers can see them become stiff and dry, creating nasty noises and smear marks on the screen. So, checking a customer’s wipers while their vehicle is with you, and sharing this insight with them, is another way of increasing not only revenue, but trust too.
Five out of ten vehicles in your workshop will require a change of wipers
A potential £75 extra a day and a possible £1,650 a month
A set of wipers approximately £15
When to replace wiper blades?
REGULAR WIPER BLADE CHECKS ENSURE THE SAFETY OF YOUR CUSTOMERS AND THEIR PASSENGERS.
We advise wiper blades to be changed every 6 to 12 months to ensure maximum vision through the windscreen. Check Replace Drive
TEST EVERY BATTERY THAT ENTERS THE WORKSHOP
Use our traffic light system to help assess the current condition of customer wiper blades.
Are you checking every battery which enters the workshop? If you’re not, then you’re missing out on a huge profit opportunity. One out of three vehicles entering the workshop could require a new battery Three out of four customers will purchase and replace a battery the same day if the test accurately shows a weak or bad battery Checking a standard lead acid battery in the workshop should take no more than 10 minutes 40% of national breakdowns occur from a direct result of battery failure. What’s the benefit to your customer? Due to lockdown, many vehicles will not have visited a workshop for a long period of time, meaning these figures are likely to increase. As this year is going to be the year of staycations, give your customer the confidence that their battery will not fail on them. CLICK HERE TO FIND OUT MORE

WHEEL ALIGNMENT
WHY ALIGNMENT
Most sources recommend an alignment service every 10,000 miles, 1 to 3 years, with each new set of tyres or when replacing steering and suspension components. It only takes 10mins to perform a wheel alignment check and It’s estimated that 1 in 5 cars coming into a workshop will have an alignment issue and on average every fourteenth check will highlight vehicle issues that will require additional parts and labour work to be carried out.
ADVANCED DRIVER ASSISTANCE SYSTEMS
■ Regular wheel alignment checks are recommended ■ If you replace steering or suspension components
■ If you replace tyres ■ One in 5 vehicles will require alignment

BENEFITS ■ Services you offer customers will be greatly increased ■ Ability to provide first fix resolutions ■ Increased revenue streams for your workshop ■ Avoid losing your customer to another garage ADAS calibration is required whenever a sensor’s aim is disturbed in anyway. This can occur as a result of collision or be a result of common repair work such as windshield replacement, suspension repairs or wheel alignment. If this ADAS system isn’t calibrated this can affect the operation of the system, send wrong information to safety systems or shut down all together. WHY CALIBRATE ADAS ■ Millions of vehicles on the road have ADAS and this number is growing ■ Common repair work can affect the ADAS operation ■ ADAS systems working incorrectly or shutting down all together ■ Calibration is required to restore to manufactures guidelines
