AROUND THE ENGINE

A HUGE OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUR WORKSHOP THIS WINTER

For pre-AGM batteries for stop start vehicles the battery look ups were fairly straight forward, you knew what engine size would take which battery, the batteries were under the bonnet, and most were easy to get to maybe 10 -20 minutes and the new battery was fitted. Fast forward to the stop-start revolution where the old types of lookups including hardback catalogues are no longer produced due to the amount of different battery types the manufacturers are using for each model. So VRM lookups are the only way to be sure which battery is required, and even here you will see options depending on the electrical upgrades so now more than ever we strongly advise the use of VRM lookups whatever the vehicle. At LKQ Euro Car Parts, our online VRM lookup is included in Omnipart, or through the Varta battery partner portal https://www.varta-partner-portal.com/ where you just click in and create your account. This also gives battery location - could it be in the floorwell, under the bonnet, or in the boot? How long will it take to fit a new one? 10 – 20 minuets or over an hour are all very important data when quoting a customer especially if the

correct fitting time is not taken into account, could not only lead to profit lost at the initial quote, but the incorrect battery quoted as well, and with customer on the receiving end of a much higher quote than original. More vehicles also require a series of ‘steps’ to follow when coding the battery in, it’s no longer just a case of remove and replace the battery, some models have specific sequences to follow and if these are not adhered to it will not code correctly and a warning light will display on the dashboard. Our VRM lookup takes you step by step through these sequences to ensure the fault codes are not displayed and the battery is correctly coded and accepted by the vehicle. As correct battery replacement becomes more important due to the increasing demands placed on them so does the complexity of fitment, we offer a solution to future proof these complexities by staying up to date with our VRM lookups.

When cars on your ramps, use this as an opportunity to test every battery that enters your workshop. Not every car will need a battery replaced, but the statistics show though that it could be as high as 1 in 3 vehicles. By testing, you’ve created another benefit for the customer and your workshop. Present your findings good or bad, if it’s good news, it’s a customer service win. If it’s not, it means that the customer has the choice to replace or decline, with 3 out of 4 customers usually taking up the offer of replacement. Checking should take no more than 10 minutes with a standard lead acid battery.
