Mind the MOT curve

3

Since the pandemic, the MOT pattern has shifted, pre-2020 we’d expect to see a spike in MOTs in a traditional way in March and September, this would coincide with the release of new vehicles.

Whilst those months are still busier than others, the relatively flatter line that was pre 2020 has meant that there is a huge dip in MOTs after March. So much so that the wave of MOTs each September to November have meant that garages have become incredibly busy.

How have MOTs been affected?

Feast to famine? Looking at the graph we can see that the real dip comes in April, making the most of the MOT custom that you have in March is imperative. This dip in custom should over the next few years even it’s self out with more vehicles coming out of the 3 year threshold and making their way into the aftermarket. However for the now, it’s making the most out of your current MOT custom, branching out, diversifying and capturing more customer business to fill the gap.

Develop your garage

4

Develop your garage service and grow your business

These days keeping customers and finding new ones is tough. With fierce competition, you shouldn’t have to decline work because you’re unable to offer services in-house. Nothing is more expensive than a missed opportunity.

Consider an added value service to keep their vehicles running smoothly and saving them money during this ‘cost of living crisis’, providing you: • Additional revenue streams for your workshop • Increased satisfaction and retention • Avoiding losing a customer or work to a competitor.

With tighter MOT rules and limits linked to vehicle emissions, it’s vital that emission control devices such as catalysts and diesel particulate filters are functioning correctly.

The opportunity fo

Before the vehicles are on ramps

Timing belts Are you checking when the timing belt was last changed? When a customer calls to book their MOT it is advised that the person accepting the booking – whether that be an MOT tester or a receptionist – checks to see if the timing belt has been changed.

Following up on advisories How many MOT advisories did you flag last year? With this figure in mind, you’re sitting on a lot of potential new business for your workshop. Last year, the DVSA predicted that one in four vehicles would pass their MOTs with advisories – depending on the severity, the vehicle could need to return to the workshop soon for repairs.

Making the most

5

Making the most out of every vehicle entering your workshop

Use your data Government research shows that 40% of MOT customers prefer to choose a garage they have used before, so work through your customer database to identify customers in need of an MOT.

Use your GMS If you have a GMS, really get the best out of it, ensure automated emails and text messages go out to customers in time so you can start to fill up your diary.

Test to earn Testing the health of a customer’s battery is paramount to keeping their vehicle on the road. By automatically testing every vehicle that comes into your workshop, you’ll be taking your customer service to the ‘next level’.

Find new business

Get social Use your social media pages to let customers know you’re open. Doing so might also remind them that their MOT is due.

Be searchable Make sure you’re listed on relevant online directories and local lists, so when potential new customers are searching for a garage, you’re in the mix.

Pick up the phone Contact your customers by phone rather than blanket email or text. One garage owner reported a 43% uptake on bookings in a single day after switching to making phone calls to his customers.

or your workshop

Whilst the vehicles are on the ramps

One in three vehicles entering your workshop could require a new battery?

Testing batteries Whether you’re informing customers that they can rest easy that their battery is in good health, or giving them the opportunity to update their failing battery before they leave your workshop – both outcomes will have a positive impact on our workshop’s reputation, and increase your chances of repeat custom.

Shocks and springs

March always coincides with higher failure for shocks and springs on an MOT. Salt on the roads and potholes after a hard winter will always play a part in failure. It’s recommended that you should always fit these products in pairs; if not it can be detrimental to the ride of the car and the handling. This will probably mean a disgruntled customer returning the vehicle, or even worse, going elsewhere.

Help your customer

6

How you can help your customers with the cost of keeping their vehicle on the road

The cost of living has been increasing across the UK since early 2021. The annual rate of inflation reached 11.1% in October 2022 – a 41-year High – before easing to 10.7% in November and 10.5% in December 2022. High inflation rates affect the affordability of goods and services your customers can afford.

Offer customers a convenient way to pay their bills

However there are services that you can offer your customers which will help with payment, Payment Assist. This clever system allows a customer to get the work done and then spread the cost over 4 monthly payments with no interest. The best bit for a workshop is that the invoice will get paid in full upfront so you don’t have to worry about cashflow.

How it works:

Susan has an unexpected bill for £400, but doesn’t have available funds to cover it.

She pays just £100 today as a deposit to take out the finance plan while we pay the merchant’s invoice in full.

Susan pays us a further £100 per month for three more months, and then she’s all done. Simple!

Soft credit check 98% acceptance.

No interest, no catch for you or your customer.

Need Support with Air Suspension? During the winter period, driving conditions tend to become more difficult and customers will be more prone to hitting potholes, kerbs, puddles and leaves – especially when we’ve had some snowfall. Even hitting loose stones and fallen branches can impact the underside of a vehicle and dirt, salt, snow and ice can cause corrosive damage. Worn or damaged parts can cause serious instability when driving and increase the potential of a road accident.

We have a vast range of parts from control arms and wishbones, to stabiliser links, tie rods, ball joints and steering knuckles – or just simple replacement bushes.

Subframes

There are generally three basic forms of the subframe. 1. A simple "axle" type which usually carries the lower control arms and steering rack.

The purposes of a subframe are to spread high chassis loads over a wide area of relatively thin sheet metal of a monocoque body shell and to isolate vibrations and harshness from the rest of the body. In a car, with its powertrain contained in a subframe, forces generated by the engine and transmission can be dampened enough that they will not disturb passengers. As a natural development from a car with a full chassis, separate front and rear subframes are used in modern vehicles to reduce the overall weight and cost.

What causes subframes to fail?

6% MOT Failure Rate Source: DVSA

2. A perimeter frame which carries the components in box 1 but in addition supports the engine.

In a word – corrosion. 99% of subframe components are made from pressed streel plates welded together. All subframes have drain holes, however this doesn’t allow for any form of effective cleaning and leads to a heavy build up of dirt, road grime and salt. This material can rot the frame from the inside.

All the corrosion shown in the image has happened due to the road and weather conditions. The MOT check needs to be thorough as this can be easily missed. The best way to check is round the drain holes in the frame, taking special attention to the areas of the frame where multiple layers of the steel meet and are welded together.

3. A perimeter frame which carries the components in box 1 and 2 but in addition supports the engine, transmission. (Front wheel drive cars)

When found the corroded part needs to be replaced and the only option is a new replacement. The average cost from a main dealer can be in excess of £600, and then other fitting costs can easily raise the cost of completing the job to over £1000. The subframe cannot normally be welded or repaired as they subframes are high stress components.

Around the Wheel

15

“A highly stressed component should be rejected if corrosion has resulted in serious reduction in the overall thickness of the material or has caused a hole or split. Welded repairs to highly stressed components are not normally acceptable. To pass, the repair should appear to be as strong as the original design.” A welded repair would only be acceptable according to the guide is: • Repairs to structural components must be properly carried out and appear to be as strong as the original structure. This requires the use of suitable materials and any plating or welding extends to a sound part of a load- bearing member. • You can only pass spot welded repairs if the original panel was spot welded and the original panel or section has been removed. • Stitch or plug welding can be used instead of spot welding. In all other circumstances, patch repairs must be continuously seam welded. • Some vehicle manufacturers have recommended repair methods that use MIG brazing, a combination of adhesive bonding and riveting, or amalgamations of these with other joining methods.

To fix the problem would normally require the frame to be removed and then repaired so an aftermarket product here would be beneficial plus it will be the considerably cheaper and longer lasting option to a repair of an already heavily corroded frame.

Our Starline products use OE spec or better material and, in cases where the possibility of corrosion is extreme, we increase the thickness of the plating and add additional drain holes and points. Starline offers a range of over 150 front and rear subframes for popular vehicle marques such as BMW, Citroen, Ford, Mercedes, VW and many more available on demand.

Beam Axles

Offer Your Customer

A beam axle, rigid axle or solid axle is a dependent suspension design in which a set of wheels is connected laterally by a single beam or shaft. Historically they have also been used as front axles in four-wheel-drive vehicles. In most cars, beam axles have been replaced with front and rear independent suspensions. Starline offer a range of over 100 rear axles which offer a solution where changing the complete axle is a much better than changing a worn bush. For PSA vehicles, changing the internal axle shafts and bearings requires specialist tools and a complete disassembly and rebuild of the axle. There is also no guarantee the repair will last, so changing the entire item is a much better way to go.

• Corrosion is the biggest cause of subframe failure (And MOT Failure) • Replacing the subframe is often the cheaper and safer option than repair • Starline offers a range of over 150 subframes and 100 rear axles.

Repxpert ABS Sensor Card An invaluable free* tool for LKQ Euro Car Parts customers The vast majority of wheel bearings currently fitted as Original Equipment (OE) are classed as “Active Sensor Bearings”, which contain a special magnetic sensor ring integrated into the seal.

This sensor ring provides valuable speed data to the ECU which is used to manage the wide range of safety critical electronic assistance devices fitted to a modern vehicles, such as ABS, traction control, and cruise control for example. However, it is not really possible to visually check if the bearing you have been supplied is fitted with an encoder within the seal. As we’ve already said, the sensor ring is magnetic, and it is common place for mechanics to check if the seal contains a sensor ring by holding a screwdriver against it. However – a word of warning!… Many screwdrivers are magnetic and can cause damage to the sensor if it comes into contact.

For a more accurate way of testing a bearing seal for a sensor, or to check the sensor for damage when diagnosing wheel bearing issues, place the FAG encoder reader card across the face of the seal. You will quickly see if it contains the magnetic sensor ring, and more importantly, if there are any signs of damage to the sensor ring.

Note: Damage can also occur in new bearings during transportation or due to rough handling.

Light on the dash? MOT FAIL! Turn off the light with Denso

Dashboard lights such as engine management, ABS, brake fluid and airbag will all result in an automatic MOT fail as the car is indicating there is a problem. DENSO products can help rectify these issues and turn off the warning light, helping your customers get back on the road. With rigorous testing and precision engineering, DENSO is best in class and is trusted byOE manufactures worldwide.

26% MOT Failure Rate Source: DVSA

Possible issues causing the engine management light to appear:

Why choose DENSO Mass Air FlowSensors? • Integrated, compact design that minimizes air pressure drop • Reduced contamination of the sensing element, increasing reliability • More accurate airflow detection • Small size passage structure that is easy to install.

Mass airflow sensor fault The mass airflow sensor (MAF) is vital for the efficient running of an engine. In its combustion chambers, an engine burns a mixture of fuel and air. The ECU (Electronic Control Unit) uses data from the mass airflow sensor to calculate how much fuel to add to the combustion chambers to match the amount of air flowing into the engine without this information, all it can do is guess.

Engine Overheating To avoid overheating of the engine when the engine gets extremely hot, the cooling fans keeps the engine within a safe temperature range by forcing air through the radiator. DENSO’s cooling fans can have solenoids fitted with sensors to ensure they only operate when needed in either low- or high- speed rotation, supporting reliable and efficient operation. Ignition System Fault Although many people refer to the starter button or key as their car’s ignition – it’s short for ‘ignition switch’ – a car’s ignition system is far more than just how it switches on and off. The ignition system is responsible for burning or ‘igniting’ the fuel that makes an engine work. In a petrol car, a mixture of fuel and air, in the form of vapour, are forced into the combustion chambers, where it’s rapidly burnt in a small, controlled explosion, started by a spark. This spark is provided by a spark plug, which is a component of the ignition system.

Why choose DENSO Spark Plugs?

• Optimum performance in a compact design • Built by DENSO in-house, with ‘zero defects’ as standard • Designs suitable for 90% of car models • Developed in-house for a wide range of applications.

Why choose DENSO Cooling Fans?

• Developed for specific applications. • Manufactured to OE quality standards • Rigorously tested and precision-engineered • Designed for maximum efficiency.

NGK

NTK

plugs for the newest engine technologies.

NGK is a leading supplier of engine management sensors under its NTK brand. The company has a variety of sensors to satisfy workshop requirements including: • NTK LAMBDA SENSORS – the No.1 choice of VMs providing exactly the right sensor for every vehicle application.

NGK is the world’s No.1 spark plug with drivers benefitting from improved on-the-road performance and fuel economy coupled with lower emissions. NGK iridium spark plugs feature an iridium-alloy on the middle electrode. One of the world’s hardest metals, iridium starts melting at a temperature of 2,450°C and is therefore very resistant to spark erosion. Consequently, the service life is doubled on average in comparison to standard nickel spark plugs. While platinum spark plugs have a platinum plate on the middle electrode ensuring a more constant output of the spark plug over the entire service life, even under difficult conditions. Precious metal spark plugs may be more expensive, but when specified by vehicle manufacturers (VMs) and used during service and repair they will prevent possible problems due to:

They give: • Improved engine efficiency

• Reduced emissions • Increased economy.

The experience NGK has in supplying the VMs worldwide allows it to offer exactly the right sensor for every vehicle application with 986 part numbers giving 76 percent coverage of European vehicles. Other sensors include: • NTK CAMSHAFT & CRANKSHAFT SENSORS – comprising more than 200 UK-specific part numbers with excellent UK vehicle parc coverage. • NTK MAF & MAP SENSORS – a range of 87 NTK Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensors and 69 Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensors. • NTK EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE (EGT) SENSORS – with 38 part numbers covering 33 million cars.

• Poor ignition performances • Poor tolerance to fouling • Higher ignition coil loads • And increasing unwanted emissions.

NGK has been developing spark plug technology since the 1930s and manufactures spark plugs for every type of automotive engine. This is why the NGK product range has the right product for nearly every engine and every demand.

Are you testing every battery that enters your workshop?

If not, then you’re missing out on a huge profit opportunity…

Testing the health of a customer’s battery is paramount to keeping their vehicle on the road. By automatically testing every vehicle you see, you’ll be taking your customer service to the ‘next level’. Whether you’re informing customers that they can rest easy that their battery is in good health, or giving them the opportunity to update their failing battery before they leave your workshop – both outcomes will have a positive impact on our workshop’s reputation, and increase your chances of repeat custom. Testing batteries can give you the opportunity of an additional revenue stream

Why not test customers’ batteries when they are booked in for a service?

One in three vehicles entering your workshop could require a new battery.

Three out of four customers would purchase and replace a battery the same day.

It should take no longer than 10 minutes to check a standard lead battery.

40% of national breakdowns occur from a direct result of battery failure.

Start-Stop technology Going back only a couple of years, the majority of vehicles on the road were fitted with a standard lead acid battery. Fast forward to next year, it is expected that 61% of vehicles in the car parc will feature a Start-Stop system. In just 15 years, the number of cars with start-stop systems is expected to rise from 1% to 61%.

Catalytic converter With the strict guidelines in place around emissions, catalytic converters can often be the cause of an MOT failure. Whether it is damaged, blocked, or has been removed – LKQ Euro Car Parts supply an extensive range of catalytic converters, DPFs and SCRs to help you get the job done. DPF cleaning If a DPF is not available in the aftermarket, we can offer a cost- effective alternative – a DPF clean on the customer’s existing unit. The cleaning process returns the DPF to its original ‘new’ state and has the benefit of fitting directly back onto the vehicle.

Turbo Failure When replacing a turbo, it is incredibly important to find out ‘why’ the turbo has failed. Not getting to the root cause beforehand could potential be a very expensive learning curve. Replacement turbochargers The UK turbocharger market has significantly grown in recent years due to the global initiative to reduce emissions and increase fuel economy. With cars now being fitted with a turbo as standard, this presents an opportunity for all workshops to get into the replacement market.

available and should also be replaced when replacing the exhaust system.

Fuel filters help systems fire on clean, pure fuel An engine is only as powerful as its energy source. When your customer refills their fuel tank, they want every drop to go where it’s most needed to save both time and money. But when dirt or water gets into the fuel it affects the injection system’s performance which can lead to corrosion and component damage. Help keep customer’s fuel contaminant-free with an efficient, expertly engineered fuel filter by MANN-FILTERS. Choose from a wide range of cutting-edge fuel filter types that meet the demands of both modern and older vehicles. In order work efficiently, fuel filters need to be changed regularly to fulfill their job in capturing unwanted particles and water circulating to the fuel. Speak to your customers, have they experienced any of the following signs that indicate a fuel filter replacement? • Complete failure to start • Poor acceleration or a decrease in power

• Sputtering or stalling at low speeds • Fuel efficiency is noticeably worse • System warning light comes on, indicating there’s a problem.
