CORROSION DRIVING IMPRESSIONS ■ Steering is heavier ■ Continuous squeal when turning steering wheel or on damaged road surfaces. CAUSES ■ Damaged boot (poor quality part, weather conditions) ■ Bad seal integrity ■ Ingress of contaminants such as water, salt, mud, sand, etc. ■ Vehicle age. EFFECTS ■ Corrosion of the strut bearing. INVERTED INSTALLATION DRIVING IMPRESSIONS ■ Steering is heavier ■ Risk of increasing noise level. CAUSES ■ The strut bearing was EFFECTS ■ Damage of the strut bearing ■ Damage of the strut damping block ■ Possible failure to pass motor vehicle inspection. not installed in the correct orientation.
TEARING OF THE STRUT DAMPING BLOCK DRIVING IMPRESSIONS ■ Feeling of float in front axle ■ Degraded suspension performance ■ Uneven wear of front tyres. CAUSES ■ Poor road surface condition ■ Inappropriate driving (driving up onto the curb at high speed, etc.) ■ Ingress of contaminants ■ Defective shock absorber ■ Missing components from the assembly (support cup). FRACTURE DRIVING IMPRESSIONS ■ Steering is heavier ■ Noise on damaged road surfaces or when turning steering wheel. CAUSES ■ Bad road condition (repeated passage through potholes) across speed bumps) ■ Too frequent shocks ■ Defective strut bearing. EFFECTS ■ Strut bearing breakage.
For a wheel bearing to operate correctly, it not only depends on the bearing being fitted correctly (follow the manufacturer’s instructions) it also relies on the quality of
the components used to manufacture the bearing. While supplying exceptionally high-quality components to manufacture the wheel bearings, NTN-SNR also pays particular attention to all the other components supplied in the wheel bearing kit, components such as the screws, bolts, nuts, stop rings, caps and seals, as many of these components cannot be reused, the NTN-SNR wheel bearing kits provide mechanics with all of the components needed to replace the wheel bearing correctly.
EFFECTS ■ Perforation of strut damping block by the shock absorber piston rod ■ Windscreen fracture. RECOMMENDATIONS ■ Replacement of the two complete strut mount kitscorroded strut bearing and probably the boot as well.
KEY MOT FAILURE
GREASE LEAKS CAUSES ■ Extremely high bearing temperature, causing grease to deteriorate ■ Damage of sealing systems during installation (seals). EFFECTS ■ Water ingress in the bearing ■ Evidence of grease leaking from the bearing seals.
VIBRATIONS CAUSES
■ Incorrect geometry adjustment of the car’s front axle ■ Rigidity problem of the car’s front axle suspension or worn suspension bush ■ Loose bearing. EFFECTS ■ Vibrations felt in the steering wheel or in the passenger compartment, while driving ■ Risk of bearing damage (spalling, scratches on the balls).
RECOMMENDATIONS ■ Locate contaminant water ingress and replace
corroded strut bearing and probably the boot as well.
RECOMMENDATIONS ■ Check wheel balancing and good condition of tyres ■ Follow the general recommendations
RECOMMENDATIONS When installing the bearing: ■ Verify that there is no overheating problem ■ Check bearing seal integrity.
RECOMMENDATIONS ■ Determination of the cause and repair by replacement of the complete strut mount on both sides.
RECOMMENDATIONS ■ Carefully follow the correct order and orientation of each component make and make ensure no parts are missing.
associated with the installation.
LOSS OF STEERING PRECISION CAUSES ■ Incorrect geometry adjustment of the car’s front axle ■ Rigidity problem of the
EFFECTS ■ On straight line, the
NTN-SNR kits include a strut bearing made of high-quality hardened steel, grease, and plastic components that ensure steering comfort, better manoeuvrability and extended product life. NTN-SNR recommends changing the strut bearing and strut mount each time the shock absorber is changed: between 45,000 miles and 60,000 miles, in pairs, or when the top mounts or surrounding parts are worn.
RECOMMENDATIONS ■ Check wheel balancing and good condition of tyres ■ Follow the general recommendations associated with the installation.
