Good quality packing and greasing is often all that stops your boat from filling up with water. If you don’t have a maintenance free shaft seal (such as a PSS seal, see page 42), then you need to ensure that inspection, lubrication and replacement of the shaft gland packing are on your regular maintenance sheet. GLAND PACKING AND REMOVAL TOOLS Drive Force gland packing rope is ideal for packing out shaft bearings and glands. Most glands or bearings require three rings of gland packing, so a one metre length is enough to provide three rings for shafts up to 4” (100mm) in diameter. Two types are available: PTFE impregnated flax ‘Sturntite’ packing is ideal for boat prop shaft applications, as the PTFE makes it ‘super slippery’ while the flax material reduces wear on the shaft when compared to graphite cotton or asbestos rope gland packing. Graphite cotton gland packing is a traditional replacement for the old graphite asbestos packing rope. The cotton material is impregnated with graphite and provides a good long term seal solution on most applications. Both flax PTFE gland packing and graphite cotton gland packing must be regularly lubricated with a quality water resistant grease, Morris grease 807620 and 807623 (see next page).
