MAD - HELPER SPRINGS

BREMBO

Why choose MAD Helper Springs for your customers? ■ Safer ■ Better grip ■ Improved traction ■ Smoother ride ■ Enhanced stability ■ Reduced wear and tear. What to look out for… Lifetime warranty for the first user

With the recent cold weather and prolonged standing periods that many vehicles have experienced over the past year, it’s more important than ever to ensure all vehicles that leave your workshop have had a thorough brake check to guarantee your customer’s safety. Common issues related to the cold weather would usually be associated with problems starting the vehicle but the cold weather can also play havoc with the vehicles braking performance. Braking components are largely manufactured from metals that are highly corrosive because they benefit from durability and resistance to distortion. Unfortunately, because of the excessive moisture and salt on the roads, the corrosion process can be accelerated. The long periods that vehicles have been idle during lockdowns have prevented surface corrosion being ‘cleaned’ from the braking surface that you would see

Brake stiction is a result of corrosion build up between two surfaces causing

the components to stick to each other, and prevents the wheels from moving the next time the car is driven. This issue is not limited to just the braking surface; corrosion build up can affect the surrounding components too. This build up will prevent free movement of brake components, something which is essential for effective braking. To help avoid these issues, we recommend checking a vehicle’s brake discs and pads and replacing them if you find excessive corrosion. Brembo UV coated brake discs not only offer better resistance against corrosion, they can also provide considerable environmental benefits, thanks to the production process.

with ‘normal’ road usage, and this creates a perfect environment for corrosion to spread. Excessive corrosion on braking surfaces will lead to ‘pitting’, which wears the brake discs surface unevenly and allows corrosion particles to contaminate the brake pad. As a result, vehicles can experience a number of symptoms, ranging from a high pitched squealing noise, juddering from the brake pedal due to the uneven surfaces making contact, reduced performance or brake stiction.

The perfect solutions for heavy loads When transporting goods, you want to be able to take everything you need. But, without proper care, this could overload the rear suspension. MAD Helper Springs could save your LCV customers’ suspension. Heavy loads can put additional pressure on vehicles which can often cause issues in other areas – as well as suspension. Take the weight off with MAD – make journeys safer, improve driving comfort and keep vehicles level when heavily laden.

WHY BREMBO

■ THE BEST FOR YOUR BRAKING SYSTEM In all conditions the shortest road braking distance. Maximum driving comfort. Very low noise level. ■ ADVANCED SOLUTION Adoption of advanced solutions patented by Brembo to minimize noice and vibrations. ■ ACCESSORIES A broad range of accessories and installation kits are provided to ensure problem-free installation. ■ OE PEDIGREE Manufacturing know how and technical expertise from OE and racing experience.

■ HOMOLOGATION AND MARKING Type approval in accordance with UN ECE R90 regulation. Marking to ensure immediate identification of the pad. ■ BROAD RANGE Covering over 98% of european car parc to satisfy the most important applications on the market. ■ CORROSION RESISTANCE Superior to products currently on the market proven by resistance to: • Salt spray testing • Humidity • High temperatures.

MAD Helper Springs are available for different vehicle types and are particularly recommended for vehicles that carry heavier loads, where manufacturers don’t often factor in excess weight needs and calculated loads are easily surpassed.

SUPERIOR DESIGN, QUALITY, AND EXPERTISE WITH SACHS

OPTIMISING THE TRANSMISSION PERFORMANCE

Transmission and transmission oil are subject to wear and tear and strongly depend on the operational conditions. In order to optimise service life and performance, we recommend regular checks and, where necessary, transmission oil changes too. This is particularly prudent for operating conditions with high temperatures and loads such as heavy cargo or trailer operation. Shorter change intervals are also recommended for many journeys at high speeds, very sporty driving or unknown vehicle use in the past. With everything in one package, changing oil is easier than ever. ZF has long been the leading vehicle transmission manufacturer with our units being used in a host of models. If your transmission is not from ZF – no problem – we now provide fully compatible oil change kits for other manufacturers’ units.

SACHS WORKSHOP TIPS TIP #1 CLUTCH SLIPPING Clutch slipping symptoms can be as varied and wide-ranging as the causes. In this case, there are a few things to check: 1. Facings – are they worn down to rivet heads? 2. Facings – heavily contaminated with oil or grease? 3. Clutch facing – is it burnt or has it disintegrated? 4. Facing – does it contact the entire surface? 5. Clutch pressure plate – has it overheated? 6. Actuation system – signs of wear and tear? 7. Diaphragm spring – is it fractured? 8. Guide cams – are there any wear-induced ridges? Things you can do to resolve the problem: • Release system wear, check freedom of movement and adjust if required • Check vehicle has correct parts fitted • Check the flywheel is correctly reworked • See if any lubricant has contaminated the friction surfaces • Check if there has been a deformation and/or warping of the friction surfaces on the flywheel and pressure plate.

The SACHS range brings you all the key clutch kit parts and components you will need in one box – including clutch pressure plate, clutch disk and clutch release bearing ■ Pilot bearings for all common vehicle models – so you can be confident we have the right part for every customer ■ SACHS DBC provides outstanding vibration damping over the entire speed range – effectively reducing noise and creating a smoother, more comfortable drive ■ Kits include special grease for assembly – guaranteeing perfect, long-term clutch functioning for mechanics who insist on the best job for their customers ■ Quick and easy ordering – the simplicity of all the right parts with just one order number.

Everything you need for an original-quality oil change. ZF supplies all the components you need for an oil change. Whether ZF LifeguardFluid transmission oil or our oil change kits – every single component is designed to be perfectly compatible with the relevant transmission. Don’t take chances with your choice – the wrong oil can become very expensive!

SELF - ADJUSTING CLUTCH

Clutches are subjected to continuous wear and tear, which is why LuK has invested tremendous efforts in the development of a wear adjustment solution. The SAC (self-adjusting clutch) uses a load sensor (sensor diaphragm spring) to activate its wear adjustment function by turning a ramped ring. This wear adjusting mechanism reduces the required actuation forces while increasing clutch life by around 1.5 times. Actuation forces remain nearly unchanged throughout the clutch's service life, and because clutch actuation comfort requires a harmonic operating load curve in addition to low actuation forces, it has been designed with the capacity to be tuned to each vehicle’s specific characteristic curve. The new SAC II doesn’t use a second diaphragm spring as a load sensor but instead has fingers formed from the main diaphragm spring and special tangential leaf springs with a regressive characteristic curve.

In recent years, self-adjusting clutches have become the standard equipment in applications with high engine torque or with increased requirements for wear reserve. The essential advantages of the SAC over conventional designs are: ■ Low release loads which remain constant throughout the entire service life ■ Excellent driving comfort throughout the entire service life ■ Increased reserve

The advantages of ZF LifeguardFluid: ■ Contains a mix of high-grade base oils and special additives ■ Helps to ensure smooth shifting and vibration-free operation ■ Special additives that extend the service life of all transmission components ■ Optimised viscosity maximises fuel savings ■ Keeps shift comfort as good as new ■ Original quality and therefore fully compatible.

for wear and consequently longer service life thanks to automatic wear adjustment ■ Release bearing over- travel is prevented by the diaphragm spring end stop.

VALEO DUAL DRY CLUTCH

The new Valeo smart OE transmission systems technology for outstanding responsiveness and comfort. The Valeo Dual Dry Clutch stands for outstanding performances embedded in OE technology. A smoothly continuous acceleration, with a minimum loss of torque means powerful driving sensations and electromechanically controlled gears change boosts driving efficiency. The Valeo Dual Dry Clutch’s 7 gears actuators offers 15% faster gears change compared to previous generation of DDC from Hyundai-Kia, with a 6 gears transmission. Combined, these features make the Valeo Dual Dry Clutch one of the best available on the aftermarket, offering the comfort of an automatic transmission and the responsiveness of a manual transmission. CO2 emissions reduction is important to Valeo and has been at the centre of the development of the Dual Dry Clutch. As a result, Valeo DDC was designed to offer a continuous transmission of engine power, with minimum torque loss during gears change. Its gears disengagement operates without electrical power being controlled by the electromechanical actuator. Working together, these innovations enhance smoothness, lower vibrations and resistance, ultimately reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

GET REPXPERT TRAINING

MPM 16000DCTF DOUBLE CLUTCH TRANSMISSION FLUID

As transmission technology continues to evolve at pace, independent workshops must try and stay up-to-date with the latest products, tools and training on offer to ensure they can keep carrying out professional clutch system repairs and replacements in the future. Taking place over two full days, Schaeffler’s Transmission Training course takes in both current and forthcoming technology, from self-adjusting clutches and dualmass flywheels, to the wet or dry double clutch and automated actuation systems that are becoming ever more popular with vehicle manufacturers because of their comfort and efficiency benefits. Despite there being well established automatic and CVT transmissions available, double clutch systems continue to steadily grow market share. Put simply, the smooth operation, direct drive and correlation between engine and gearbox speed of a double clutch system delivers better driving comfort, lowers emissions and improves fuel economy – making it a simple choice for vehicle manufacturers to make. Like every clutch, a dry double clutch system is subject to wear and tear, so as their popularity grows it is vital that independent garages learn how to repair double clutch equipped vehicles to remain competitive - garages simply do not need to turn away this significant profit opportunity. Conventional clutch replacements are standard practice for every garage, but when it comes to repairing a dry

double clutch system, the appropriate special tools and knowledge required may be missing. Schaeffler is the only company in the independent aftermarket to offer complete repair solutions for both wet and dry double clutch systems - the LuK RepSet 2CT. Each kit includes a double clutch module and all the necessary components required for the garage to change the clutch easily and professionally - whilst minimising costly errors and creating profit opportunities. LuK’s 2CT dry double clutch repair solution is easier to grasp than you might think when you apply the know-how and expertise available from Schaeffler’s REPXPERT technical training professionals. Special tools are necessary for the accurate removal and installation of a double clutch. This is because, unlike a conventional clutch (which is bolted directly onto the engine side of the flywheel), a double clutch is tightly mounted onto the input shaft of the gearbox. Dual mass flywheels for double clutch transmissions can be installed without special training or tools - however, it’s important to follow certain steps prior to removing the transmission as errors could cause potential costly problems. Further information on LuK Double Clutch technology, other Schaeffler products and systems, fitting instructions, labour times and much more can be found on the REPXPERT workshop portal at www.repxpert.co.uk – or by using the REPXPERT app, which is a free download for all iOS and Android devices.

Benefits at a glance ■ High functional reliability, long service life ■ Technically up to date ■ Wide product range, high market coverage ■ Time savings thanks to ready-to-install ■ Price advantage compared to new parts programme ■ Vehicle warranties remain valid ■ Compliance with statutory emissions standards ■ Same warranty as in the new parts programme ■ Protection of resources and the environment.

Belt A broken timing belt spell disaster.

Timing Tensioner Listen for noise and check for wear - because a failure in the tensioner will fail the belt. Tensioners and idler rollers are wearable parts subjected to ever increasing stresses. If the tensioner’s wear leads to the belt fully dislodging; each of the components that rely on the belt for power will be lost. The bearing, seal, spring and grease are all critical components. SKF bearing and seals expertise focus on optimal materials selection for high loads and temperatures resistance. Our tensioners follow optimal clearance and sharp tolerances to achieve perfect system alignment.

Water pumps A failed water pump can overheat the engine and lead to serious damages. The structural integrity and lifespan of the engine is dependent on a water pump. Gaskets can deteriorate, pulley misalignment can generate noise and particles from contaminated coolant mixtures can block the pump and lead to leakages. Interestingly, bearing failure is the second leading cause of water pumps breakdown, with particles contamination leads making up 50% of these failures. SKF bearings and seal expertise focuses on most optimal bearing and seal solution per car application because remember – one solution doesn’t fit all

Check none of the teeth that the belt is riding on are worn – worn teeth will dig into the belt and cause premature wear. All parts linked to the belt should be replaced at the same time and you want to secure resulting tension in the system is exactly as recommended by vehicle manufacturer. From EPDM, Glass dord, to Aramid reinforcement, SKF Belts follows strictly OE technology and high - grade materials compound formulations.

Bosch eXchange common-rail injector Bosch series remanufacturing involves not only replacing all wearing parts but – most importantly – all critical components with 100% new parts. Maximum operational reliability is additionally guaranteed by high-precision manufacturing standards and

stringent quality control. Wearing parts are 100% replaced. All reusable

components are tested and reused on the basis of Bosch original equipment expertise and replaced with Bosch original spare parts as required.

WINTER IS HERE. ARE YOU READY?

Imagine this: your customer is getting ready for a drive in the cold dark winter morning, they turn their key, but nothing happens. They try everything to get it started but in vain. The battery seems fresh enough, fuel is there as well. This is where the real problem begins and they will come to you for a solution. As the temperature drops, many drivers will experience this. The thing is, not all car owners are aware of the role of this small but very important component of a diesel engine. Glow plugs are key to a smooth engine start in cold winter conditions, so the question is, what can you do to prevent frustrating situations like those described above for your customers?

Most common signs that glow plugs need replacing 1. The first and most obvious is right there on the dashboard – the glow plug warning light. It indicates failure. 2. If the warning light doesn’t turn on, you need to look for other signs. This is very common with older engines. Signs like: ■ Increased white smoke from the rear ■ Louder combustion noise ■ Uneven running of the engine ■ Lower power output ■ Increased fuel consumption. You may also find the following tips helpful: ■ You can check the glow plugs with a multimeter. You will find out if there is an open circuit, short circuit, or if the glow plug is in good condition. It is easy to use and you do not have to remove glow plugs. ■ Glow plugs usually reach their wear limit one after another. It costs less if you replace the complete set at once than repeatedly replacing individual defective glow plugs.

Tips on how to remove and install glow plugs:

1

Disconnect the battery then take off the engine cover and other components so that you can access glow plugs directly

Disconnect the electrical connector by hand

Remove the glow plug from the cylinder head using a socket wrench. Do it slowly and pay attention to any resistance. Don't try and remove it with force, as you can damage the glow plug. A major mistake that could cost you money, nerves, and time

Clean the hole before installing glow plugs. Use a reamer set. That's a must. You should remove any

Screw the new glow plug in as far as it goes by hand

Set the torque wrench to the correct tightening torque

Place the torque wrench onto the glow plug and tighten it. Insufficient tightening of the glow plug could lead to combustion gas leakage and poor electrical performance. Overtightening the glow plug can cause the glow plug to break

ELECTRIC VEHICLES AND THE 12V BATTERY

ERA Start-Stop Batteries THE ELECTRIC SPARE PARTS LEADER

Did you know nearly all electric vehicles (EVs) still have a 12V lead acid battery, as well as their lithium-ion battery? Acting as a secondary power source to ensure the uninterrupted function of safety critical systems or in case of a traction battery failure, but also to power features when the vehicle is off, like the central locking systems, VARTA AGM or EFB batteries provide the perfect 12V solution. With the increase of many electrical comfort and efficiency systems on board, a reliable power source is vital.

Register now for free: WWW.RDR.LINK/AAB007 Lithium-ion batteries are considered the successor of lead-acid technology when it comes to the drivetrain of hybrids and EVs. But they are not as inherently robust as other rechargeable technologies and require continuous monitoring. Lithium-ion cells need protection from being overcharged and deep discharge. This is where already proven solutions like AGM and EFB play to their strengths. They step in when the high voltage battery fails or switches off, serving as an additional power supply to buffer the electrical system. They ensure that important safety functions, such as ABS and ESP, are working at all times. AGM and EFB batteries are far from being obsolete. Their construction and behaviour, as well as their lack of electronics, makes them a reliable and robust power source today and in the future.

DPF PROBLEMS?

GARAGE SERVICES

Common DPF problems include: ■ Lack of regeneration (blocked filter) ■ Insufficient drive cycles ■ Sensor fault ■ Mechanical fault ■ Electrical system fault ■ Poor quality fuels/oils/servicing ■ Low fuel/oil level ■ Empty/low fluid reservoir ■ Excessive heat (Broken down/melted filter core) ■ Excess fuel combusting upstream of filter ■ Excess fuel combusting within filter. The filter can only deal with what flows through it. A blocked filter is a symptom of a problem, not the cause. LKQ Euro Car Parts offer a DPF cleaning service, what are the benefits? ■ The customer is getting the same unit back - no fitment issues ■ It is a cost-effective alternative to main dealer prices where no aftermarket unit is available ■ Patented cleaning process that removes 98% of ash and soot.

Engine and DPF Carbon Cleaning

With greater emphasis being put on environmental policies and needs, vehicle emissions play a large part in the green agenda. Tighter MOT regulations on emissions means that it features quite prominently in the list of MOT fails. Changing filters, oil and spark plugs is one part of getting a car through its emission test, but have you thought about. Adding carbon cleaning as well? Carbon cleaning can help improve a vehicle’s performance while lowering a customer’s carbon footprint. In the current economic climate, customers are holding onto vehicles longer, meaning they are aging. Being able to offer carbon cleaning/DPF cleaning, means they will ultimately perform better and last longer. The benefit to your workshop means that you can offer an additional service, create additional revenue streams and profit, but most importantly keep customers happy and loyal. Why carbon cleaning? Trends show we’re keeping vehicles longer and looking to reduce cost of vehicle ownership. There are millions of vehicles on the road with DPFs. Up to 70% of clogged DPFs are unnecessarily scrapped, meaning you could be paying for a replacement when cleaning would restore the part to perfect working condition.

The benefits of providing an engine and DPF carbon cleaning service are:

LKQ Euro Car Parts offer a DPF cleaning service with a turnaround of just three days:

■ Reduces emissions ■ Clean blocked DPF’s ■ Improves fuel efficiency

Day 1: Customer identifies blocked DPF, branch collects DPF and sends to be cleaned

Day 2: DPF is inspected, cleaned and tested and returned to branch

Day 3: Branch receives DPF and sends back to the customer.

■ Restores engine performance ■ Increases a positive reputation from customers.

If you don’t have the equipment you need for certain jobs and find you are turning away or sending work to another garage, talk to your local LKQ Euro Car Parts branch about Garage Services. This could help bring your garage to the next level and open up your streams of revenue.

■ The process is completely safe for the DPF filter and the materials within the filter ■ No harmful solvents are used which could damage the internal materials ■ Before cleaning, the machine measures the DPF's air flow rate in its dirty/blocked state ■ The DPF then cycles through a high-pressure flush cleaning process – this is repeated 16 times and ensures maximum removal of particulate matter, ash, soot and oil

■ After cleaning the DPF is up to 98% as efficient as fitting a new replacement ■ The DPF's airflow is then re-measured to ensure particles have been removed and the filter is unblocked and clean ■ The DPF is then fully dried to ensure there will be no white smoke through the exhaust when the engine is started-up after being re-fitted.

J&S AUTOCARE, CARSYS Q&A FOR AFTERMARKET

Have you had any feedback from customers? The main thing we’ve heard from our trade customers in particular is how slick the invoicing process is. It’s a small thing, but the invoices created and sent through CarSys look nice and professional, which contributes to the overall customer experience. The inbuilt invoice history system allows our team to see what parts have been used previously and to compare costs.

Aftermarket spoke to Jack Palmer, Managing Director at Gloucester-based J & S Autocare, about the garage’s first year using CarSys – the cloud-based Garage Management Software (GMS) from LKQ Euro Car Parts. What benefits have the team found from using Garage Management Software? We started using CarSys when we launched the business last year. LKQ Euro Car Parts is our main supplier, so it made sense to be using its GMS. The main thing to say for me and the team is that it’s saved us time and money. It’s allowed our technicians to streamline the way they work by having all the details of multiple jobs at their fingertips, such as vehicle MOT and service histories and all the data needed to provide customers with accurate quotes and invoices. This has meant they’ve become more efficient and have been able to take on more jobs. The platform is also very user friendly so has saved us needing to call LKQ Euro Car Parts for things like checking and ordering stock, because its full catalogue is integrated within the software. Which features of CarSys do you use most? We use CarSys for everything. The individual diary for technicians and integrated catalogue means they can order parts directly for each specific job, and the software adds the markup on for you. The reporting feature lets us keep on top of our sales figures, so we frequently use this for sales reports. Being able to view a job’s payment breakdown through the software is great too, as it helps us to maintain a clear record of what’s been taken and what’s owed.

Take control of your workshop

What improvements do you think could be made to the software? We’re aware that CarSys is developing all the time, and new features are being added. Payment breakdowns, for example, are a relatively new tool. The VRM lookup function means our technicians can easily look up MOT and service histories and helps them to order the right parts, faster. What we’d love to see is the software going one step further and sending MOT reminders to customers, and we’re aware that it will soon be able to do this, both via email and SMS. All in all, we’ve been really impressed with using CarSys during our first year. I know some garages run without a GMS, but it’s made such a difference. I can’t imagine us being without it.

How can CarSys help your garage?

CLOUD BASED CarSys is entirely cloud based meaning that no installation is required and access is possible from any device with internet connectivity.
