Are You Ready for Change?
LKQ Europe drives CO 2 savings for fleet and supports eFuel Alliance
LKQ Europe has joined the Berlin-based eFuel Alliance e.V., actively supporting the use of climate-neutral fuels in the existing fleet to achieve climate targets in Europe.
Arnd Franz, CEO of LKQ Europe, commented: "Synthetic fuels are a meaningful addition to electromobility to achieve an immediate reduction in vehicle fleet CO 2 emissions. These fuels can make an ecologically and economically significant contribution to climate protection.”
The Prime Minister has announced sales of brand new petrol and diesel vehicles will be banned from 2030 and hybrids from 2035.
The statement brings forward the original date by 10 years and is part of Boris Johnson’s 10-point plan for a ‘green industrial revolution’.
This means all petrol and diesel powered vehicles will disappear from showrooms in 2030 if not beforehand.
According to LKQ, CO 2 savings for new vehicles and the trend towards electromobility alone will not meet the EU's climate targets by 2030. This is because by 2030, the share of e-vehicles in the 21 largest European markets and the United Kingdom is expected to be 9.8 percent. According to LKQ, synthetic fuels are essential to sustainably run existing fleet, as the combustion engine will continue to dominate for many years to come. E-fuels do not require new fueling station infrastructure or new powertrains, making them a consumer-friendly alternative to the rather high investment required to purchase an e-vehicle. In addition, the range, charging times and charging options are not yet practical for many drivers.
■ Only 5% of technicians are trained to deal with new technology ■ 6,000 techs will need to be trained every year for the next 10 years to ensure there is enough techs to deal with the increased demand.
A huge, 80% of UK garages turn work away because they don’t have enough or even any, qualified staff to work on hybrid and electric cars. Currently, it is estimated only 5% of technicians are qualified to deal with the new technology.
We can support you at Auto Education Academy , with the training required to work on hybrid/electric vehicles, offering these courses at venues all over the UK.
LKQ Europe CEO, Andy Hamiltion, has expressed his support and the importance of the initiative; “Especially in regions with weak infrastructure, the combustion engine remains fundamentally important. With a balanced European promotion concept, the use of e-fuels as climate-neutral e-diesel or e-gasoline could make a significant and cost-effective contribution to CO 2 reduction, As a member of the eFuel Alliance, we can work with a strong and influential community of interests in Europe for the success of the energy transition. The acceptance of e-fuels as an essential part of European climate policy is the most important goal of the initiative, along with the industrial production of synthetic fuels from renewable energies.

All of our courses are part of the IMI tech safe scheme
LKQ is committed to technology openness and the promotion of other climate-friendly energy sources, such as hydrogen, biogas or synthetically produced methane from renewable energies, as well as the use of E20- fuels – as long as the solutions work for consumers. The view is that technology neutrality can help to promote competition, in order to achieve the CO 2 targets. Here and across Europe, the direction of travel on emissions is clear, but a single-minded focus on transitioning to battery-powered vehicles won’t be enough to meet the targets that have been set. New diesel and petrol vehicles can still be bought and sold in this country until 2030 – and will remain on the roads for many years after that. That’s why it’s just as important to find ways of cleaning up the combustion engines in the used market, as it is to encourage people to switch to hybrids and EVs if they can. While we are helping independent garages to upskill to service and repair hybrids – and longer-term, EVs – it’s important to recognise the continued role of traditional combustion engines, and the massive potential of e-fuels to deliver CO 2 savings.”

Check Replace Drive Use our traffic light
As the weather gets worse through the winter period, some vehicles will start to pick up faults, one of which is faulty wipers. Wipers generally only last a season before they will need changing. As winter brings difficult driving conditions and unpredictable weather, motorist rely on their wipers more and more. By identifying faulty wipers when a customer’s vehicle is in your workshop, not only you are providing a great service which promotes customer loyalty, you are securing an additional revenue stream now and on future work. Statistics say, 1 in 2 vehicles that enter your workshop will need wipers replacing. To test and fit new wiper blades to a vehicle should only take 5 minutes, and the benefits of such quick task can be huge. If you have 10 vehicles in your workshop each day, 5 of those are likely to need the wipers changing. If a set of wipers is £15, that’s £75 in extra revenue every day. If you factor that extra revenue over a month (22 working days) that could be an additional £1650 each month. When to replace wiper blades We advise wiper blades to be changed every 6 to 12 months to ensure maximum vision through the windscreen.
