Hybrid technology for the next generation of vehicles Valeo 48 Volt iBSG In the world of automotive engineering, the quest for greater fuel efficiency and reduced emissions has led to innovative advancements in vehicle electrification. One such groundbreaking technology is the Valeo 48 Volt

iBSG (Integrated Belt Starter Generator), a remarkable piece of engineering that

promises to reshape the automotive landscape. Historically, automobiles have relied primarily on a 12 volt electrical system to power various components, from lighting to infotainment systems. However, as the demand for more sophisticated electronics and improved fuel efficiency has grown, the limitations of a 12 volt system have become increasingly evident. This is where 48 volt systems come into play.

Why the shift to 48 volts

• Powering Electrification • Reducing Current • Improved Start-Stop Systems • Advanced Electrification.

Valeo i-StARS

Valeo i-StARS has the capability to be used both micro-hybrids and mild-hybrids. By incorporating advanced electronics additional features have been added. These include: • Stop-Start • Energy recovery (also known as braking recuperation or regenerative braking) • Engine-Off coasting • Torque assist • ZEV mode (Zero Emission Vehicle) electrical Drive

The Valeo i-StARS (Integrated Starter Alternator Reversible System) is installed in place of an alternator. The combustion engine is started immediately and silently thanks to the belt that permanently links the system to the crankshaft. The alternator mode features a new technology that improves the electrical efficiency of the system. In addition, the external ECU from the original StARS system is now integrated into the rear of the unit thus improving the architecture of the vehicle and reducing the systems weight.
