THE IMPORTANCE OF CATALYTIC CONVERTERS

You are probably aware that a catalytic converter (Cat) can cause an NCT failure, and with strict guidelines now in place with regards to emissions, it is important that the catalytic converter is functioning properly. A car will fail an NCT if the Cat has been removed, as it is designed to reduce a vehicle’s harmful gas emissions.

Good Practice Change the lambda sensors when replacing a catalytic converter. (ceramic substrate inside the cat casing) ■ Lambda sensor functioning correctly ■ Cat is blocked ■ Incorrect fuel used  ■ Unsuitable fuel additive ■ Engine problems There are several reasons that can cause a cat converter to fail: ■ Incorrect fuel/air mix – cat can become contaminated with unburnt fuel causing the engine to run poorly, this needs to be rectified before fitting a new cat. ■ Damaged or broken monolith

Catalytic Converter theft

In the last 2 years there has been a sharp increase in catalytic converter thefts from vehicles. Unscrupulous individuals are targeting cars parked in car parks and in residential streets, jacking them up and stealing the catalytic converter for the precious metal that they contain. These metals include Rhodium, Palladium & Platinum. Rhodium is now more expensive than Gold! Popular targeted vehicles included the Honda Jazz, Toyota Prius and Auris, Lexus CT200h and RX400h.

LKQ Euro Car Parts can supply replacement catalytic converters for units that have been stolen.
