MOT

RIDING THE MOT WAVE

MOT patterns have changed over the last couple of years, predominantly due to the pandemic that swept the world in 2020. Vehicle owners in the UK were given a six month extension meaning that the traditional MOT start in March has shifted. What does this mean? In the second half of 2022, MOT volumes are predicted to increase to around 54% with September, October and November being the busiest periods. It is expected that these three months will generate approximately 30% of this predicted volume.

The graph below demonstrates the surge in MOTs that is likely to hit this year, with the dotted line showing the peak in September. This represents more than 1m more MOTs than in 2019.

Equipment ready? As a trusted partner to your business, LKQ Euro Car Parts have everything you need to get the right products and services so that you are ready to meet the MOT demand. Our latest Workshop Solutions brochure can help kit your garage out and if it’s servicing you require, then give your local Account Manager a call who can help with service packages.

Is your workshop prepared? With the expected surge in MOTs, a planned workload and well-prepared workforce have never been more important. Scheduling work now will help you determine whether you need extended opening hours or additional technicians for jobs. Don’t wait for customers to call you; now is the time to pick up the phone, call your customers and book work in. You could also do this by text or email – ultimately managing your diary will be key.

T WAVE

UTILISE YOUR GARAGE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Using Garage Management Systems (GMS) like CarSys will allow you to manage the overdue workload currently within the UK car parc. GMS' systems like CarSys have a direct feed into a vehicle’s MOT history: this can be a vital tool. Looking back through your customers previous MOT history may also flag if they had any advisories that need rectifying this time round. Depending on the use of the vehicle over the past year there may well be additional work that you may have to factor into your diary.

Don’t forget to use tools like social media. Having a social presence will also help to boost your reputation and support customers who are looking around for a reputable garage to book an MOT.

Workshop ready? With the changing MOT pattern, ensuring you have enough staff to cope with the additional demand may be tricky, however, we can help. Investing in CPD training will provide you with a long-term fix. Our award winning training scheme can get your staff on the right MOT courses at a location near you! If it’s a top-up course you’re looking for, we also have them available through our LKQ Academy platform.

MOT FAILURE PREDICTIONS

MOT failures throughout September and October were high and November is predicted to be the same. Don't miss out on advisory work - follow up with customers and get them booked in.

Common MOT Failures

KEY MOT FAILURE

The statistics say:

Seat belt failures 2.2%

Drivers view of the road 8.7%

Body structure failure 1.9%

Light signal failure 29.%

Brakes failure 17.2%

Tyre and wheels failure 10.4%

Suspension failure 20.2%

NB source is from Halfords.

MOT ADVISORIES

Are you missing out on MOT advisory work? According to DVSA data around 35% of these vehicles will fail the MOT at the first attempt. 1 in 4 vehicles will pass with advisories, meaning, at some point they will have to return for further work depending on the severity of the advisory. With the cost of living now shadowing our every purchase, many customers may not have the disposable income to fix advisories at the initial MOT stage as it isn’t mandatory. But this is where the power of your customer service or Garage Management System (GMS) can make a difference for your business.

BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY

MOT ADVISORIES

Utilise your GMS GMS' like CarSys have a direct feed into a vehicle’s MOT history. This means you can make notes on a customer’s record to contact them again after the MOT to advise that advisories will probably now need checking, depending on the vehicles use. Scheduling calls takes no time at all and a quick friendly phone call, email or text means that you can keep in contact with your customers. Take control of your workshop Discover Carsys

No GMS? When working with new MOT customers, and you don’t have a GMS, log onto the government website before the vehicle enters your workshop. You can check previous advisories which will give you a good place to start when looking around the vehicle. If these were noted in the last MOT there is good chance that they will need replacing this time. You may also uncover something fundamentally wrong with the vehicle which is causing the initial problem. Good customer service means you can have proactive discussions with a customer.

Upselling on advisories

Braking is a good example where upselling is possible but may depend on the customer and vehicle type. The right products and brands are key; Eicher is our entry-level proposition. We are so confident in the longevity of the brand that we offer a comprehensive 24 months/24,000 miles warranty guarantee that covers wear and tear. We also offer an OE solution with Pagid and Brembo which have OE identical parts numbers in the range and all the quality control measures that you would expect from companies who supply the dealers. The pads also have an extensive range of fitting kits included in the box and the discs are coated. When changing pads and discs it’s also recommended to change the brake fluid at the same time.

KEY MOT FAILURE

So, what are the main takeaways? Customer service is king - advisories can create extra revenue for your workshop. The key is good communication with your customers. You’re the expert in service and repair; provide your customer with the confidence that you care for their vehicle and you’ll fit the right parts.

CHECKING BRAKE HOSES AS PART OF VISUAL MOT CHECKS WHEN CHECKING BRAKES AND CALIPERS

There are some things you should look out for when checking brake hoses, such as:

A new hose wouldn’t have any of the below signs; ■ Be hard/stiff in the material ■ Be soft/weak ■ Expand under pressure. When the mechanics are doing their checks it would be a great idea to pump the brake pedal, with another colleague looking at the hoses, to see if there are any visible leaks. Don’t let your customers fail their MOT – replace the handbrake cable LKQ Euro Car Parts and Pagid recommend you replace the handbrake cable when: ■ Rope and sheath are damaged, jeopardising the item’s efficiency by decreasing its braking capacity ■ Rubber parts are damaged (flexible gaters etc), as this would ease the penetration of external agents, like impurities or water, that would eventually hinder the smoothness of the product ■ The vehicle has spent excessive time driving on roads covered by road salt, causing erosion of parts of the cable, affecting its performance. Why Change Brake Shoe Fitting Kits? Old parts increase the risk of: ■ Brake noise (the brake shoes rattle) ■ Uneven and disproportionate load on the brake shoes cause risk of damaging the drum ■ Can affect the brake efficiency of the brakes ■ Lost spring tension and pull effect. Before change

■ Cracks ■ Chafing ■ Bulging ■ Expanding ■ Leaking ■ Twisting.

It is important to check the brake hoses when the car is having it’s service/MOT, because of the safety critical component that it is. The brake hose needs to be intact for it to be functioning 100%. A good place to start when checking brake hoses, is to look out for the 6 key points mentioned above, none of these signs should occur on the fitted brake hoses. Should you see any of those signs, the brake hoses should be changed.

The above is what they should look for, but there is also something you should feel out for.

Don’t forget to change…

Why Change Brake Pad Fitting Kits? Old parts increase the risk of: ■ Brake noise (brake pads and bolts rattle) ■ Uneven and disproportionate load on the brake disc ■ Uneven braking can affect the brake efficiency of the brakes ■ Significantly reduced spring force.

Spring tension before change

It’s recommended you change the parts when changing brake pads. This is to ensure an even braking ability function and efficiency of the brakes.

It is therefore recommended you change the parts when changing brake shoes. This is to ensure an even braking ability function and efficiency of the brakes.

COMMON MOT FAILURES

Alternative to OE without scrimping on quality – It has to be Eicher It’s anticipated that 17.2% of MOT failures this year will be from brake fails. With the rise in the cost of living, being able to offer an alternative to OE brands will really make a difference to some of your customers. However, you don’t need to waiver on quality. Eicher has been the choice of many workshops for over a decade. Eicher's coefficient friction material provides a stable solution that offers less fading at high temperature and high speed, while ensuring long product life, with quiet braking under any condition. All this whilst maintaining high environmental standards and lowering cost of ownership for your customer. Don’t just take our word for it, millions of customers have had Eicher fitted over the years and continue to do so.

FLUSHING CRITERIA

HYDRAULIC STEERING SYSTEM

USEFUL INFORMATION

Why steering systems often fail: ■ Hose residue in the system – power steering hoses deteriorate from the inside out, this causes rubber residue which may block the Power Steering System. To resolve, the system would need to be replaced every five years. ■ A faulty steering pump – metal debris from the steering pump can cause damage to the seals, scoring to the internals of the steering pump and rack.

The main reasons for flushing the system on all power steering systems is that the fluid becomes contaminated during regular use, and the contamination will cause premature failure of hydraulic seals under pressure.

Our recommendations to successfully fit a new rack or pump

You’ve ordered your hydraulic steering system via Omnipart or your local branch and it has arrived and it’s ready for fitting. ALL INJECTORS ARE

…wrong! From a visual standpoint, Bosch injectors can all look very similar - which can be very confusing to workshops looking to replace faulty injectors with a genuine high-quality replacement. Today, the process of choosing the correct injector can be a problem, as there are now an increasing number of options available. With varying levels of quality, differentiating them from visual appearance alone is difficult. Injectors may appear the same on the outside and may even use the same Bosch part number as the genuine product, however, on the inside the spare parts and the repair methods that are used can differ vastly. Bosch have tried many ways to raise awareness of the importance of quality in the market but very often this is still overlooked for “cheaper” more cost-effective alternatives. We have all seen emails promising us a small fortune for signing up to something that always seems too good to be true. The same can be said when it comes to buying a replacement injector, as all injectors are NOT the same….

USEFUL INFORMATION

Things to look out for ■ Repaired, remanufactured, reconditioned. These terminologies can sometimes be misleading, making you think that these are genuine Bosch. However, many of these do not contain genuine Bosch parts and alarmingly many have not been repaired or tested on test benches that conform to strict Bosch guidelines and specifications. ■ Out of date injector – yes, injectors, believe it or not, do have a “Best before date.” When left too long, the test fluid inside the injector can dry out, causing the internal component to seize. An average injector has an approximate shelf life of around 5 years and many of these injectors get sold off cheap as they get closer to the end of their shelf life. ■ Removed from a scrapped vehicle – we all see these injectors at a quarter of the cost, mostly being sold online promising the quality of a brand-new genuine injector. These should be avoided at all costs! Question yourself, for example, would you purchase a toothbrush simply because it is described as good as new?

D THE ENGINE

THE SAME RIGHT?...

Many workshops fall into the trap of fitting inferior products, thinking that they are using a more cost-effective version of a genuine Bosch injector. Unfortunately, these inferior injectors cause excessive fuel consumption, lower performance, and sometimes irreparable damage to the engine and exhaust system. All of these problems lead to additional costs for the workshops and their customers. Therefore, it is important for workshops to be aware of this when choosing a replacement injector.

If it’s not in a Bosch Box…. It’s not Bosch!

Bosch offers either a new injector (same as the OE product) or a Bosch eXchange factory-remanufactured injector (remanufactured in Bosch OE facilities). All genuine Bosch injectors are supplied in boxes complete with tamper-proof labels providing assurance and peace of mind. Bosch eXchange parts are the only genuine Bosch factory remanufactured products available in the independent aftermarket. ■ The eXchange range covers 95% of Bosch Common Rail Systems ■ 100% replacement of wearing parts ■ Assembled to the latest OE specifications with product enhancements incorporated into the remanufacturing process ■ Tested, validated, and inspected on the same production line as new parts which ensures that there is consistency ■ High functional reliability and long service life ■ Time savings thanks to the ready-to-install Bosch eXchange products  ■ Price advantage compared to the new parts program ■ Same warranty as the new parts program.

See if you could benefit by asking yourself the following questions: 1. Oval Crankshaft and camshaft sprockets are fitted to high- volume production engines today from Ford, PSA and VAG. How can you identify them and what is their purpose? 2. Do common rail high-pressure fuel injection pumps need to be timed? 3. Many camshaft and high-pressure fuel pump sprockets have to be released from their mounts during a timing belt change? Why is this, and what effect does not releasing them have on the timing belt drive system? 4. Why do you need two tensioner rollers on a starter/ generator FEAD system?

INA Timing Belt and FEAD (Front End Auxiliary Drive) belt system training

We often hear from vehicle Technicians that they have not undertaken, or even been offered, any updated training for Timing belt and FEAD drive systems since their initial mechanical training. Often commenting that they don’t really need additional training, they also think that because they have been working on these systems without issue for years, they know everything there is to know about belt drive systems. It’s a fair comment, and they may have had no issues… yet. However, there have been some real major technological developments made to belt systems over the last ten years, and on the face of it, information regarding these advances is still very thin on the ground. So, it is important not to forget, if you think your knowledge is up to date, then you won’t go looking for more information until something goes wrong…

WHY TEST BATTERIES

Are you checking every battery that enters your workshop? If not, then you’re missing out on a huge profit opportunity… Testing the health of a customer’s battery is paramount to keeping their vehicle on the road. By automatically testing every vehicle you see, you’ll be taking your customer service to the ‘next level’. Whether you’re informing customers that they can rest assure their battery is in good health, or giving them the opportunity to update their failing battery before they leave your workshop – both outcomes will have a positive impact on your workshops reputation, and increase your chances of repeat custom. POWER UP YOUR WORKSHOP AND TEST EVERY BATTERY

Did you know?

One in three vehicles entering your workshop could require a new battery?

And that three out of four customers would purchase and replace a battery the same day

MAKING THE MOST OF BATTERY OPPORTUNITIES

Did you know? Over 40% of yearly national breakdowns are caused by a faulty battery. Thousands of vehicles are towed off to nominated garages or fixed at the roadside to have this simple fault rectified. That vehicle owner may have been in a garage a week before having a service or planned work and this fault wasn’t picked up at the time. The result may make the customer think twice about going back to this garage. Why it's important to test every battery? When a customer's vehicle enters your workshop for planned work or a service, test the battery as part of the course. It doesn’t take long to do, if it's in good shape then it’s a good news story to your customer. If it’s on its way out or will fail imminently, let your customer know. The likelihood is your customer will want it to be changed (stats say one in three will). 40% is a big number. By testing every battery you can take advantage of this available work, prevent an unnecessary tow off for a customer and create a better lasting customer service experience.

One of many reasons for failure Is hot and and cold weather..

Weather plays a huge part when batteries go bad. This summer we have seen prolonged spells of searing heat. Heat, like cold can have severe consequences on the life of a battery. The extreme warm weather weakens battery plates, limiting the amount of charge they can hold or supply on demand. This makes them less effective. This isn't noticed during the summer months as an engine will need less power to crank and engine oil will be thinner due to the warmer weather. Means an easier start which the weakened battery is incapable of. However, as the

temperature drops oil will become more congealed and the engine will require more power/crank to turn over. The weakened plates, coupled with less electrical current due to cold weather, will probably lead to starting issues and ultimately battery failure.

VARTA BATTERY FITTING INSTRUCTION EXCLUSIVE TO OMNIPART CUSTOMERS.

What are the benefits;

Location of the battery.

With the increased complexity of battery replacement on newer vehicles and especially Start-Stop models, we have worked closely with VARTA to provide a step- by-step guide. For Start-Stop batteries fitment can be tricky and the location of these batteries are not always easy to find. Take the Range Rover Velar; the battery is stowed away in the boot. These guides aim to take away the complexity of fitment, saving you time, and best of all not having turn work away to another garage or OES. Log into Omnipart or create an account. Enter vehicle registration in the VRM search on Omnipart home page. ■ This will then load the page with the product selection ■ The vehicle registration must be used as the fitting instructions are vehicle specific. So where do you need to go? USEFUL INFORMATION
