AIR CON

MAXIMISE YOUR OPPORTUNITY IN 2022

Not all garages offer an air con service but it’s something that could provide you with a unique opportunity if it’s something your competitors don’t. The vast majority of new cars on the road now have air conditioning fitted as standard, with over 10 million being introduced since 2017. So identifying the right A/C machine that allows you to service them effectively is an area that needs your full attention. Plus, the return on investment speaks for itself.

Let’s talk gas R1234yf (new gas) has been the refrigerant of choice since 2017, with all new vehicles being manufactured using this gas. These vehicles are now hitting the aftermarket in volume. Along with vehicles since 2013 also using ‘new gas’ there has never been a better time to invest in a ‘new gas’ compatible machine. Let’s not forget about R134a. There’s still around 6 years left of any real R134a volume work. So even though R134a is no longer used by manufacturers, there is the volume of work out there to provide a return on your investment. Working to a budget, or want to consider your options? Then maybe a dual gas machine could be the right fit for you. Why not consider investing in something now whilst the value for money is still there?

So what's next… Once you have decided to offer an air con service, you need to make sure both your staff and workshop are equipped for the job.

AIR CON

HYBRIDS, EVS AND TH

You will no doubt start to see an increase in hybrid and electric vehicles entering your workshop over the coming months. Question is, do you have the skills and equipment to deal with them?

As air con season is upon us, more vehicles will be making their way to your workshop with air con system issues and some of those will be hybrid and electric vehicles. Do you and your staff know the fundamental differences between an internal combustion engine aircon system and a hybrid and EV system?

Let’s take a look... ■ The greatest risk for a hybrid electric air con system is that if the incorrect type of compressor oil is used, it may conduct high voltage to the compressor case or connected components. A person may receive an electric shock if they touch the compressor, engine and an appropriate ground. This will also lead to damaged components. ■ The air con system in a hybrid or electric vehicle is not only there to give cabin comfort, the system is essential in providing cooling to both the electric motors, axles and the battery systems, both of which produce large volumes of heat in use. Without a working, efficient air con system, will overheat and fail. ■ Sensors in the compressor case can detect very small voltage leaks. Once a leak is detected, the control system will shut down the compressor.

■ The air conditioning compressors in some hybrid and electric vehicles are operated by an electric motor instead of a drive belt. ■ The oils used in these compressors are formulated to have high dielectric properties, that makes them non- conductive. As little as 1% contamination by improper oil can reduce the dielectric properties. ■ Users must have an air con machine that is ‘Hybrid ready/compatible’ – the function to self-clear its hoses and oils so that no cross contamination occurs. ■ If a different type of oil gets into one of these compressors a variety of issues may occur.

LIGHT COMME

Van sales are soaring - are you equipped to deal with the extra demand? The van market appears to be bouncing back quicker than the car market. In addition to the increase in online vehicle shopping, we believe this market will continue to grow. This means garages have a huge opportunity to offer services, repairs and maintenance for LCVs. Huge growth in 2020 and 2021 means that many LCVs will soon be coming out of service plans due to age or mileage. Potentially, many of these vehicles will start to use the independent aftermarket for service, maintenance and repair work. This is where LKQ Euro Car Parts can help you take advantage of this extra work if you aren’t already: superior stock holding and all the parts you need to get your customers back out on the road.

LIGHT COMME

LCVs are the workhouse and backbone of our country. They are an extension of a trades person, a warehouse on wheels and the last mile hero. Overall they work harder than any passenger vehicle period. All of this means that you will probably see a lot of LCVs coming through your workshop for general servicing, but there could be other issues at which will effect the health of an LCV. Run time LCVs are never idle, their engine is constantly on and running from delivery to job. Multiply this by day and week and the engine is working harder than a standard passenger vehicle. Start-stop activity and short distances over time will accelerate engine wear quicker and parts will need replacing sooner.

What to check while on the ramp?

■ Timing belts ■ Timing chains ■ Tensioners

■ Water pumps and thermostats ■ Diesel injectors ■ Blocked DPFs

Some vehicles are constantly running and used as a generator. A 12 month service interval may be too long due to the engine constantly running creating extra wear on certain parts. Heavy loads By their nature of size and capacity, a van is designed and built for carrying heavy loads. But, constant loading and potential over-loading, will have an effect on integral parts from over time. What to check while on the ramp? Suspension parts, shocks and springs – should always be replaced in pairs - especially if carrying loads. Drive train and transmission parts, extra weight creating greater friction on bearings. Heavier loads could affect drive shafts, prop shafts etc coupled with driving style (curb riding) in built up areas. Always check cabin filters. LCVs will cover more miles and spend longer sat in traffic leading to filters becoming clogged or blocked quicker than passenger vehicles. The health of the driver could be at risk if not changed regularly.

BREMBO CO-CAST TECHNOLOGY

The Mercedes/Brembo OE brake disc has a ribbed/castellated design on the hub. This has been patented by Mercedes, and the only option for this disc is via a Mercedes dealer. Brembo introduced an alternative disc with a smooth hub design overcoming the Mercedes patent. This disc uses Brembo Co-Cast technology: the only difference is that this version does NOT have the ribs/castellations visible.

CASTELLATED DISC

BREMBO CO-CAST DISC

What you need to know ■ Such technology not only ensures that the braking system’s performance will be high, but it also reduces the disc’s weight by up to 15%, therefore providing a consumption and emission reduction and improved driver handling. ■ The Brembo Co-Cast disc is perfectly interchangeable with the original disc, but it has also passed the most severe bench tests and it’s approved according to ECE-R90 standards.

PAGID – CHECKING BRAKE FLUID Signs that your customers brake fluid needs to be changed ■ Your ABS Light Comes On One of the simplest indicators that your brake fluid either needs a change or needs a top-up is if the Anti-Lock Braking System, or ABS light on your dashboard turns on. While some older vehicles may not have an ABS light, newer vehicles are equipped with this indicator to let you know if there is something wrong with your fluid. ■ Pedal Problems Another way to tell if your brake fluid is low or needs to be replaced is if your brake pedal isn’t responding like it used to. If your pedal feels firmer than usual, the fluid could be contaminated. If it feels easier or softer when you press the pedal down, this can mean that your fluid is getting low. ■ Strange Noises When Braking If your braking system doesn’t have enough fluid in it, or if the fluid is old, your brakes may begin to make noise. At this point, it is important to have your brakes checked as soon as you can, before any damage occurs to your braking system. ■ Brake Pads Not Functioning as Well When your brake fluid is dirty or low, it isn’t able to depress your brake pads as efficiently as it should. This can cause uneven wear or damage to your brake pads, which can cause grinding, squeaking, or squealing noises when you use your brakes. ■ A Burning Smell If you’re noticing a burning smell or see smoke after using your brakes over a period of time, this can mean that your brakes are overheating. If this happens, you need to pull over as soon as possible in order to allow the brakes to cool. If you keep driving, the overheated fluid can actually lead to brake failure, causing you to be unable to stop.

If you notice that your brakes aren’t performing as well as they used to, it is important to have your braking system checked as soon as possible to avoid losing braking function.

Are there different types of brake fluid? Yes, there are three main types of brake fluid. ■ So called “conventional” or “universal” brake fluids based on glycol ethers and designated DOT 3, DOT 4 or DOT 5.1. These are used by all the major vehicle manufacturers, and account for more than 99% of all brake fluid usage. ■ Fluids based on silicone. These can be used in normal braking systems but should not be mixed with conventional grades. Used by some classic cars and military vehicles. ■ Fluids based on mineral oil (LHM). These require special braking systems and are totally incompatible with conventional fluids. Used in some older Citroen and Rolls-Royce vehicles. Within the conventional grades there are many sub-grades.

THE WHEEL

Why do I need to change my brake fluid?

The shelf life of brake fluid At Pagid, we occasionally receive enquires from our customers regarding the shelf life of brake fluid – especially when packaged in plastic bottles. Brake fluid is strongly hygroscopic (it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere) and consequently even when packaged in closed bottles, its boiling point tends to decline. This is because the plastic walls of the bottle can be very slowly permeated by water vapour, which is then absorbed by the fluid. In fact almost any flexible or elastic material can be permeated by water vapour in this way. The magnitude of this boiling point decline is dependent upon several varying factors such as the relative humidity of the surrounding atmosphere, the wall thickness of the bottle, the type of closure used, the grade of brake fluid involved and the ambient temperatures, all of which can make shelf life predictions difficult. However, for a non-racing brake fluid in a temperate climate we would normally quote a shelf life of approximately 18-24 months from the date of production. In practice we usually find that where brake fluid containers have been kept in stock for this length of time, the packaging begins to deteriorate aesthetically, gathering dust or showing signs of ageing such as fading of the labels etc, and this also imposes a practical shelf life as far as saleability is concerned. We would emphasise that brake fluid stored in closed containers does not suddenly become unsafe after its shelf life has expired, in fact in certain cases it may be perfectly safe to use up to a period of perhaps 10 years or longer. However, after its effective shelf life has passed, it can no longer be guaranteed to meet the specification against which it was supplied. Of course storage conditions influence shelf life. We normally recommend that brake fluid packages are stored under cover in a dry and largely dust free environment, out of direct sunlight at a temperature of 15 -30°C. Large changes in humidity or temperature should be avoided where possible.

Conventional brake fluids are hygroscopic; they attract and absorb moisture from the atmosphere. This process will take place throughout the service life even though brake fluid is in a “sealed” brake system, as water vapour molecules are able to slowly penetrate the flexible rubber brake hoses. Over time, this results in a decline in the boiling point of the brake fluid, and increases the risk of corrosion to metal components. As the volume of moisture in the brake fluid increases, the boiling point will eventually reach a critical level where it is dangerous. This is why all European vehicle manufacturers recommend a complete fluid change periodically.

Can brake fluids be mixed? Yes, brake fluids conforming to DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 can safely be mixed although the performance of the higher specification products will be diluted. Silicone (DOT 5) and mineral-based brake fluids should never be mixed with any other types. I tested some new brake fluid with a brake fluid tester, and it failed. Why? Almost certainly, you were using a conductivity-type brake fluid tester. Although these are very cheap, they can give misleading and even dangerous results, and must not be used. Obtain a tester that will actually heat the fluid and re-test it. Most likely, you will get a very different result.

OPTIMAL - STEERING KNUCKLES

What is a Steering Knuckle? In automotive suspension, a steering knuckle is the part which contains the wheel hub or spindle and attaches to the steering and suspension components. The steering knuckle is the pivot point of the steering system which allows the wheels to turn. On vehicles with conventional suspension systems the steering knuckle’s spindle locates and supports the inner and outer wheel bearings. Generally, the spindle is used on non-driven wheels.

The steering knuckle is situated where the wheel meets the suspension which meets the steering. The wheels mount to the outside via a hub or a spindle, and the tie rod and suspension connects inside via mounts that allow the knuckle to pivot.

STEERING KNUCKLE

How do we know the steering knuckle needs replacing?

If the ball pin hole in the knuckle shows signs of excessive wear, corrosion or distortion, the knuckle should be replaced. A steering knuckle can be cracked or bent due to a heavy impact from a pothole, kerb or other object in the road. If the steering knuckle breaks the steering alignment will be thrown out leading to poor handling and uneven tyre wear.

A damaged steering knuckle can put additional stress on the ball joints causing them to fail, often suddenly. Unfortunately, steering knuckles are heavy-cast parts made of steel or aluminium and are not repairable.  Damage to the steering knuckle could be discovered anytime during the collision repair process.

WHY OPTIMAL? Safety, reliability and precision is what you need from steering and suspension products. Try out the quality of the OPTIMAL chassis and steering parts for yourself - you will be impressed. The range is constantly developing and extending, and we have added over 200 parts to the steering knuckle range.  Production locations for OPTIMAL chassis and steering parts are certified according to quality management standard ISO TS 16949. This certification is your guarantee that the products meet the strict quality requirements of the automotive industry and is why we can offer a 3-year warranty on OPTIMAL products.

AIR SUSPENSION - HOW TO IDENTIFY PROBLEMS AND REPAIR

Compressor Sometimes a compressor delivers insufficient air pressure. In this case the vehicle will not reach the right level, especially with extra load. Most compressors break or burn out due to a leak in the air suspension system. Therefore burn-out new compressors will be rejected for warranty. The relay must always be replaced. An old or damaged relay can also lead to a burnt-out compressor. Air Springs/ Struts The “VOSS” OE airline connector is a push in lock system. Attempts to manually tighten the connector can damage the screw thread, causing a leak. Air springs are wear and tear products, lasting 6-10 years before they start leaking. Leaking usually starts on the folding edge of the sleeve. Arnott uses Tier 1 parts for multiple components of the air spring, such as Continental for the rubber below, VOSS connectors, and heavy-duty crimping rings.

Malfunctioning valve blocks can produce similar symptoms as leaking air springs.

If a car (corner) drops 1 inch overnight, there is a leak in the system.

Air suspension system The shock absorber takes the first hit when worn out, the air spring absorbs the shock and gets damaged. A leaking shock absorber damages the rubber below.

An Arnott remanufactured air strut is renewed inside-out, remanufactured with a professional approach and high-quality components.

A leak can only be fixed by replacing the complete part (air spring).

After replacing, the engine must be started before lowering the vehicle. This ensures that the air spring unfolds in the correct shape.

Detecting a leak often only requires water and soap spray.

HYDRAULIC STEERING SYSTEM

USEFUL INFORMATION

Why steering systems often fail: ■ Hose residue in the system – power steering hoses deteriorate from the inside out, this causes rubber residue which may block the Power Steering System. To resolve, the system would need to be replaced every five years. ■ A faulty steering pump – metal debris from the steering pump can cause damage to the seals, scoring to the internals of the steering pump and rack.

The main reasons for flushing the system on all power steering systems is that the fluid becomes contaminated during regular use, and the contamination will cause premature failure of hydraulic seals under pressure.

Our recommendations to successfully fit a new rack or pump

You’ve ordered your hydraulic steering system via Omnipart or your local branch and it has arrived and it’s ready for fitting. In the box, you will find instructions, we recommend you thoroughly read the information provided before fitting. Some product instructions may include QR codes for further fitting information.

As you’re fitting a new system – you’ll need new fluid to flush out the old, stock up via Omnipart!

Now you’ve got your new rack or pump and plenty of new fluid you are ready to make a start… You must completely flush the system before fitting the NEW Rack or Pump This is VERY important so that the system does not fail from the start – i.e. the old fluid damaging seals.

All of our Electric Power Steering (EPS) racks are plug and play – a term that describes the simplicity that we bring to problem installations and in 95% of occasions, eliminates the need for programming of the remanufactured EPS product supplied.

Our recommendations to successfully fit a new rack or pump

You’ve ordered your electric steering system via Omnipart or your local branch and it has arrived and it’s ready for fitting. In the box, you will find instructions, we recommend you thoroughly read the information provided before fitting. Some product instructions may include QR codes for further fitting information.

Now you’ve got your new rack or pump, you need to remove any fault codes caused by the previously failed EPS product, that may be embedded or stored in the vehicle ECU.

A calibration needs to be performed during installation every time a replacement product is fitted. Failure to do this can cause premature failure of your EPS remanufactured product.

n guide provided you will extend the power steering products.

STARLINE BATTERIES OUR START STOP BATTERY RANGE EXPLAINED AGM Technology

Longer service life

Improved starting performance

Leak proof

Excellent charge acceptance

Greater deep cycle resistance

Maintenance free

AGM is the leading technology on the market for the most exacting requirements. AGM batteries are engineered to cope with the excess heat created by regenerative braking and the continuous on/off action of the Stop-Start system. Importantly, they power the electrics when the engine is in “sleep mode”, at traffic lights or stuck in jams. Only ever replace AGM with AGM or it will fail prematurely.

EFB Technology

Longer service life

Improved starting performance

Leak proof

Outstanding charge acceptance

Greater deep cycle resistance

Maintenance free

EFB technology satisfies requirements that lie somewhere between conventional starter batteries and AGM technology. Like AGM, EFB batteries power the electrics when the engine is in “sleep mode”. They ensure that sufficient energy is always available, even when a large number of energy consumers are operating during the stop phase. Only ever replace EFB with EFB, or it will fail prematurely. WHY WAIT TILL WINTER TO GET ENGAGED WITH BATTERIES? Make sure you are testing every vehicle that enters the workshop.

Testing batteries is a huge profit opportunity. It should take no more than ten minutes to check a car battery if you’re equipped with the right battery tester. Doing a battery health check will alert you to any underlying battery faults before they become an issue, in turn helping you to build customer confidence because they’ll know where to come back to next time. The stats speak for themselves and an opportunity for your garage could be just round the corner:

■ One in three vehicles entering a workshop could require a new battery

■ Three out of four customers will purchase and replace a battery the same day if the test accurately shows a weak/bad battery

■ 40% of national breakdowns occur as a direct result from battery failure.

ALL INJECTORS ARE

…wrong! From a visual standpoint, Bosch injectors can all look very similar - which can be very confusing to workshops looking to replace faulty injectors with a genuine high-quality replacement. Today, the process of choosing the correct injector can be a problem, as there are now an increasing number of options available. With varying levels of quality, differentiating them from visual appearance alone is difficult. Injectors may appear the same on the outside and may even use the same Bosch part number as the genuine product, however, on the inside the spare parts and the repair methods that are used can differ vastly. Bosch have tried many ways to raise awareness of the importance of quality in the market but very often this is still overlooked for “cheaper” more cost-effective alternatives. We have all seen emails promising us a small fortune for signing up to something that always seems too good to be true. The same can be said when it comes to buying a replacement injector, as all injectors are NOT the same….

USEFUL INFORMATION

Things to look out for ■ Repaired, remanufactured, reconditioned. These terminologies can sometimes be misleading, making you think that these are genuine Bosch. However, many of these do not contain genuine Bosch parts and alarmingly many have not been repaired or tested on test benches that conform to strict Bosch guidelines and specifications. ■ Out of date injector – yes, injectors, believe it or not, do have a “Best before date.” When left too long, the test fluid inside the injector can dry out, causing the internal component to seize. An average injector has an approximate shelf life of around 5 years and many of these injectors get sold off cheap as they get closer to the end of their shelf life. ■ Removed from a scrapped vehicle – we all see these injectors at a quarter of the cost, mostly being sold online promising the quality of a brand-new genuine injector. These should be avoided at all costs! Question yourself, for example, would you purchase a toothbrush simply because it is described as good as new?

THE ENGINE

THE SAME RIGHT?...

Many workshops fall into the trap of fitting inferior products, thinking that they are using a more cost-effective version of a genuine Bosch injector. Unfortunately, these inferior injectors cause excessive fuel consumption, lower performance, and sometimes irreparable damage to the engine and exhaust system. All of these problems lead to additional costs for the workshops and their customers. Therefore, it is important for workshops to be aware of this when choosing a replacement injector.

If it’s not in a Bosch Box…. It’s not Bosch!

Bosch offers either a new injector (same as the OE product) or a Bosch eXchange factory-remanufactured injector (remanufactured in Bosch OE facilities). All genuine Bosch injectors are supplied in boxes complete with tamper-proof labels providing assurance and peace of mind. Bosch eXchange parts are the only genuine Bosch factory remanufactured products available in the independent aftermarket. ■ The eXchange range covers 95% of Bosch Common Rail Systems ■ 100% replacement of wearing parts ■ Assembled to the latest OE specifications with product enhancements incorporated into the remanufacturing process ■ Tested, validated, and inspected on the same production line as new parts which ensures that there is consistency ■ High functional reliability and long service life ■ Time savings thanks to the ready-to-install Bosch eXchange products  ■ Price advantage compared to the new parts program ■ Same warranty as the new parts program
