MOT WAVE

RIDING THE MOT WAVE

UTILISE YOUR GARAGE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

MOT patterns have changed over the last couple of years, predominantly due to the pandemic that swept the world in 2020. Vehicle owners in the UK were given a six month extension meaning that the traditional MOT start in March has shifted. What does this mean? In the second half of 2022, MOT volumes are predicted to increase to around 54% with September, October and November being the busiest periods. It is expected that these three months will generate approximately 30% of this predicted volume.

Using Garage Management Systems (GMS) like CarSys will allow you to manage the overdue workload currently within the UK car parc. GMS' systems like CarSys have a direct feed into a vehicle’s MOT history: this can be a vital tool. Looking back through your customers previous MOT history may also flag if they had any advisories that need rectifying this time round. Depending on the use of the vehicle over the past year there may well be additional work that you may have to factor into your diary.

The graph below demonstrates the surge in MOTs that is likely to hit this year, with the dotted line showing the peak in September. This represents more than 1m more MOTs than in 2019.

Don’t forget to use tools like social media. Having a social presence will also help to boost your reputation and support customers who are looking around for a reputable garage to book an MOT.

MOT FAILURE PREDICTIONS

BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY

As we are in MOT season, we’ve predicted 30% MOT failures throughout September and October 2022 and the common categories that contribute to the failed results.

MOT ADVISORIES

Utilise your GMS GMS' like CarSys have a direct feed into a vehicle’s MOT history. This means you can make notes on a customer’s record to contact them again after the MOT to advise that advisories will probably now need checking, depending on the vehicles use. Scheduling calls takes no time at all and a quick friendly phone call, email or text means that you can keep in contact with your customers. Take control of your workshop Discover Carsys

Common MOT Failures

KEY MOT FAILURE

The statistics say:

Seat belt failures 2.2%

Drivers view of the road 8.7%

Body structure failure 1.9%

Light signal failure 29.%

No GMS? When working with new MOT customers, and you don’t have a GMS, log onto the government website before the vehicle enters your workshop. You can check previous advisories which will give you a good place to start when looking around the vehicle. If these were noted in the last MOT there is good chance that they will need replacing this time. You may also uncover something fundamentally wrong with the vehicle which is causing the initial problem. Good customer service means you can have proactive discussions with a customer.

Brakes failure 17.2%

Tyre and wheels failure 10.4%

Upselling on advisories

Suspension failure 20.2%

Braking is a good example where upselling is possible but may depend on the customer and vehicle type. The right products and brands are key; Eicher is our entry-level proposition. We are so confident in the longevity of the brand that we offer a comprehensive 24 months/24,000 miles warranty guarantee that covers wear and tear. We also offer an OE solution with Pagid and Brembo which have OE identical parts numbers in the range and all the quality control measures that you would expect from companies who supply the dealers. The pads also have an extensive range of fitting kits included in the box and the discs are coated. When changing pads and discs it’s also recommended to change the brake fluid at the same time.

KEY MOT FAILURE

MOT ADVISORIES

Are you missing out on MOT advisory work? According to DVSA data around 35% of these vehicles will fail the MOT at the first attempt. 1 in 4 vehicles will pass with advisories, meaning, at some point they will have to return for further work depending on the severity of the advisory. With the cost of living now shadowing our every purchase, many customers may not have the disposable income to fix advisories at the initial MOT stage as it isn’t mandatory. But this is where the power of your customer service or Garage Management System (GMS) can make a difference for your business.

So, what are the main takeaways? Customer service is king - advisories can create extra revenue for your workshop. The key is good communication with your customers. You’re the expert in service and repair; provide your customer with the confidence that you care for their vehicle and you’ll fit the right parts.

WHAT IS TPMS?

Tyre Pressure Monitoring Sensor (TPMS) is a system to monitor tyre pressure inside tyres. TPMS was introduced into European mass production during a phase-in period between 2012-2014. A TPMS sensor (OE) has a designed life of about 7 years or 100,000 km (60,000 miles).

Complete Service Kit 495775080

■ There is a requirement within law to keep the systems fitted to cars after 2012 operational as they are part of the annual MOT tests  ■ To maximise the life span of the sensor it should be serviced anytime the tyre is dismounted. T his system is made up of a sensor mounted inside the tyre transmitting data to the vehicle and showing warnings to the consumer. 2) Indirect TPMS T his system uses the ABS sensor to approximate the tyre pressure and alert the consumer. There are currently two types of TPMS systems: 1) Direct TPMS

CAUSES ■ Poor road surface condition ■ Inappropriate driving (driving up onto the curb at high speed, etc.) ■ Ingress of contaminants ■ Defective shock absorber ■ Missing components from the assembly (support cup). FRACTURE DRIVING IMPRESSIONS ■ Steering is heavier ■ Noise on damaged road surfaces or when turning steering wheel. CAUSES ■ Bad road condition (repeated passage through potholes) across speed bumps) ■ Too frequent shocks ■ Defective strut bearing. EFFECTS ■ Strut bearing breakage.

For a wheel bearing to operate correctly, it not only depends on the bearing being fitted correctly (follow the manufacturer’s instructions) it also relies on the quality of

the components used to manufacture the bearing. While supplying exceptionally high-quality components to manufacture the wheel bearings, NTN-SNR also pays particular attention to all the other components supplied in the wheel bearing kit, components such as the screws, bolts, nuts, stop rings, caps and seals, as many of these components cannot be reused, the NTN-SNR wheel bearing kits provide mechanics with all of the components needed to replace the wheel bearing correctly.

HYDRAULIC STEERING SYSTEM

ELECTRIC POWER STEERING

USEFUL INFORMATION

USEFUL INFORMATION

Why steering systems often fail: ■ Hose residue in the system – power steering hoses deteriorate from the inside out, this causes rubber residue which may block the Power Steering System. To resolve, the system would need to be replaced every five years. ■ A faulty steering pump – metal debris from the steering pump can cause damage to the seals, scoring to the internals of the steering pump and rack.

All of our Electric Power Steering (EPS) racks are plug and play – a term that describes the simplicity that we bring to problem installations and in 95% of occasions, eliminates the need for programming of the remanufactured EPS product supplied.

The main reasons for flushing the system on all power steering systems is that the fluid becomes contaminated during regular use, and the contamination will cause premature failure of hydraulic seals under pressure.

Our recommendations to successfully fit a new rack or pump

You’ve ordered your electric steering system via Omnipart or your local branch and it has arrived and it’s ready for fitting. In the box, you will find instructions, we recommend you thoroughly read the information provided before fitting. Some product instructions may include QR codes for further fitting information.

Our recommendations to successfully fit a new rack or pump

You’ve ordered your hydraulic steering system via Omnipart or your local branch and it has arrived and it’s ready for fitting. In the box, you will find instructions, we recommend you thoroughly read the information provided before fitting. Some product instructions may include QR codes for further fitting information.

Now you’ve got your new rack or pump, you need to remove any fault codes caused by the previously failed EPS product, that may be embedded or stored in the vehicle ECU.

As you’re fitting a new system – you’ll need new fluid to flush out the old, stock up via Omnipart!

A calibration needs to be performed during installation every time a replacement product is fitted. Failure to do this can cause premature failure of your EPS remanufactured product.

Now you’ve got your new rack or pump and plenty of new fluid you are ready to make a start… You must completely flush the system before fitting the NEW rack or pump This is very important so that the system does not fail from the start – i.e. the old fluid damaging seals.

By following the installation guide provided you will extend the life span of your power steering products.

The heavier the vehicle, the more affected the following suspension and chassis parts:

Suspension bushings: To put it quite simply, bushings are cushions. They not only absorb the impacts from the road, but they also support your vehicle’s weight. Bushings contain

Hub assemblies: The more weight a vehicle has, the more strain there is on the wheel bearings in the hub assemblies. That means your wheel bearings will wear out faster over time. Wear and tear is normal in all car parts but electric vehicle owners have to check and replace their suspension and chassis parts more often. If you’re an electric vehicle owner, you should consider installing more robust aftermarket parts.

OUR STARLINE RANGE OF EMS PRODUCTS

KEY MOT FAILURE

EMS is an abbreviation for Engine Management System. EMS products help control vehicle functions electronically. Any product which provides the ECU with information can be classed as EMS. Some examples of information required by the ECU are:

Speed – speed sensors tell the ECU how fast the vehicle is travelling and monitor the engine speed (camshaft and crankshaft, gearbox speed).

Temperature – temp sensors measure the temperature of different aspects of the vehicle like coolant, exhaust gas, air intake, cabin and exterior temperatures.

Oil pressure switch

Reverse light switch

DPF sensor

Ignition coil

Air temp switch

Lambda sensors

Switches – provide the ECU with information to display a fault on the in car computer system or dashboard (oil pressure switches), or switch on and off vehicle functions (brake lights, reverse lights, cruise control). Emissions – products like lambda sensors monitor the oxygen content of gas running through the exhaust system to ensure the vehicle runs efficiently and EGR valves recirculate exhaust gas to reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere. With the development of Electric Vehicles, EMS products will continue to play a critical role in the smooth functioning of vehicles, for example with battery temperature management.

AROUND THE ENGINE

ELECTRIC AND HYBRID APPLICATIONS Since the Covid pandemic, there has been a noticeable increase of Light Commercial Vehicles on the road, mainly used for home deliveries. Vehicles such as Transit’s, Sprinter’s and Crafters all have turbos – some even have two! LCV TURBOCHARERS – KEEPING VEHICLES MOVING

DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM BEFORE REPLACING A TURBO

As the demand for home deliveries continues to increase, these vehicles are doing high mileage and are therefore likely to be pushed to their limits in terms of maintenance. Due to the high mileage, they probably also have an increased likelihood of turbo failure. ■ Extensive range of new turbochargers ■ Cost-effective range of remanufactured turbos ■ 2 year warranty on both new and remanufactured turbochargers ■ Dedicated technical helpline.

Turbojetzt is an LKQ Euro Car Parts brand.

The importance of asking “why?” Replacing a failed turbo is not just about how to remove and refit a replacement or what's wrong with it, it's arguably more important to ask why the turbo failed in the first place. Failure to ask this question can lead to a very expensive learning curve including disgruntled customers, unproductive workshop space and inevitably the question of who pays if the replacement turbo fails prematurely. The reason that asking “why?” is so important, especially where turbochargers are concerned, is the fact they rely on the engine being in good working order for its longevity. It is not just a bolt on standalone component - such as an alternator or starter motor - it depends on the engine for lubrication, the integrity of the exhaust gasses to drive the impellor and the cleanliness of the intake air feeding the compressor. Common issues and recommended checks:

SEE HOW WE CAN POWER YOUR BUSINESS

Has the turbo failed on your recovery truck? Give us a call, we can supply turbos for commercial, plant and marine applications!

1. NOISY

2. LACK OF POWER ■ Check the filter, hoses and pipes are clean and in good condition ■ Check the fuel injection system is in good condition and correctly adjusted ■ Check the exhaust system, including catalyst and DPF, is not blocked or damaged.

3. EXCESSIVE SMOKE OR OIL CONSUMPTION ■ Check the air filters are not restricted or blocked ■ Check the engine oil specifications strictly correspond to car manufacturer’s recommendations ■ Check the oil drain pipe is clean and not restricted ■ Check for excessive pressure in engine crankcase and correct function of engine breather system ■ Check the hoses and joints are in good condition ■ Check for lubrication problems in engine block if oil or carbon deposits are found on exhaust manifolds or in the turbine.

PERFORMANCE ■ Check the pipework and support brackets are not loose or damaged and the connections are good ■ Check for any leakages or cracks in the intercooler.

THE BENEFITS OF KLARIUS EXHAUST SYSTEMS

Benefites ■ Type Approved – not a requirement in the UK, but it does mean that the exhaust is manufactured to an OE standard which is important for the following reasons; ■ First time fit – reduced ramp time ■ Noise – enhanced driver/passenger comfortback pressure - equivalent to OE giving correct flow so that the engine is not under strain which would increase fuel consumption - an important factor with the current economic pressures ■ Largest range from any supplier in the UK ■ 3 year warranty ■ Availability – off the shelf, same day and overnight.

The benefits of Klarius exhaust systems Klarius exhausts are manufactured to the highest quality standards, and are designed to suit specific marques, models and production years of vehicles. Our state- of-the-art research and development facilities, manufacturing centre and rigorous testing practices enable us to manufacture aftermarket exhausts that excel in application. Our entire exhaust range is designed to achieve or exceed the performance and efficiency levels of the equivalent OE part.

The most common reason for turbo failure is oil starvation. Causes include poor maintenance, using incorrect oil and damaged, blocked or low-quality oil filter.

SELF ADJUSTING CLUTCH

WHY CHOOSE DENSO SPARK PLUGS?

As clutches are subjected to continuous wear and tear, LUK has invested tremendous efforts in the development of a wear adjustment solution. The essential advantages of the SAC over conventional designs are: ■ Low release loads which remain constant throughout the entire service life ■ Excellent driving comfort throughout the entire service life ■ Increased reserve for wear and consequently longer service life thanks to automatic wear adjustment ■ Release bearing over-travel is prevented by the diaphragm spring end stop.

■ Optimum performance in a compact design ■ Built by DENSO in-house, with ‘zero defects’ as standard ■ Designs suitable for over 90% of car models ■ Developed in-house for a wide range of applications ■ Creators of the world’s first Platinum, Iridium & SIP spark plugs – innovation is in our DNA.

Nickel TT® ■ Better ignitability than a standard nickel plug ■ First-ever fine-wired spark plug without precious metal- based electrodes ■ DENSO patented twin tip upgrade- technology ■ Average lifespan is up to 40.000km.

Iridium TT® ■ DENSO’s patented Iridium TT design  ■ Sparks grows 360 degrees in all three dimensions ■ Improved ignition performance and combustion output ■ Increased spark plug lifespan  ■ Higher performance due to the twin tip technology and the DENSO patented 0.4mm centre electrode.

Iridium Super Ignition Spark Plugs (SIP) ■ Super ignition is considered the best available technology for spark plugs ■ Produced with Twin tip technology and a smaller centre electrode ■ Highest levels of performance even within the most extreme and challenging environments ■ Very long lifespan.
