HYDRAULIC STEERING SYSTEMS

STEERING & CONTROLS Hydraulic steering can be simply added on almost any vessel allowing multiple steering positions and autopilots. The most important item for the hydraulic steering system is the steering cylinder (also known as the steering ram). It’s important that the steering cylinder is sized correctly to the application. If the steering cylinder is too small the steering will be too stiff, the cylinder may leak or the steering may not work properly, especially in astern. If the steering cylinder is too big, there will be little feedback at the wheel. Our team can help to calculate the correct hydraulic steering system for your vessel. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions or for a detailed quotation. For dual steering position, in order to change over from one position to another, the installation of non-return valves is required. The ideal solution would therefore be the installation of two steering pumps, with integrated non-return valves. Another solution could be steering pumps without integrated non-return valves, and the installation of a separate non return valve block. In the case of single station control, installation of a steering pump without integrated non-return valve will suffice in most cases. Helm pumps without non-return valves are ideal for single station (1 helm) applications. The lack of a non return valve allows full feedback to be felt through the wheel and minimises costs. If a second helm or autopilot is required, then a remote valve set will be needed.

Helm pumps with non-return valves can be used in multiple position installations and with autopilots, without the need for change over valves. The built in valves allow feel when turning the wheel, but prevent rudder kick back at the wheel.
