REQUIREMENTS TO SELECT THE SUITABLE WINDLASS

The table below is there as an approximate guide for selecting your windlass. The power of the windlass in relation to the length of the boat is an approximate value. You will need to know the weight of the anchor you are going to be using and the size and length of the chain to be able to calculate the power of the motor required. The length of the boat, however, allows you to identify the most suitable size of the anchor and calculate the metres/ feet of chain to be required by simply multiplying the length of the boat by 5. Once you have obtained the moorings total weight (anchor & chain), take into account the possible presence of a breeze, which inevitably increase the workload . The resulting degree of difficulty can be identified by a specific safety parameter that when multiplied by the moorings total weight will provide the maximum workload and the instant in which the anchor will be released from the bottom, the maximum pull. The parameter is related to the size of the boat, up to approximately 70 feet, a value of 4 is recommended; while for longer vessels, it is possible to reduce the value of about 50%. HOW MUCH POWER IS NEEDED FOR WEIGHING?
