Did you know? Over 40% of yearly national breakdowns are caused by a faulty battery. Thousands of vehicles are towed off to nominated garages or fixed at the roadside to have this simple fault rectified. That vehicle owner may have been in a garage a week before having a service or planned work and this fault wasn’t picked up at the time. The result may make the customer think twice about going back to this garage. Why it's important to test every battery? When a customer's vehicle enters your workshop for planned work or a service, test the battery as part of the course. It doesn’t take long to do, if it's in good shape then it’s a good news story to your customer. If it’s on its way out or will fail imminently, let your customer know. The likelihood is your customer will want it to be changed (stats say one in three will). 40% is a big number. By testing every battery you can take advantage of this available work, prevent an unnecessary tow off for a customer and create a better lasting customer service experience.

Weather plays a huge part when batteries go bad. This summer we have seen prolonged spells of searing heat. Heat, like cold can have severe consequences on the life of a battery. The extreme warm weather weakens battery plates, limiting the amount of charge they can hold or supply on demand. This makes them less effective.

oil will be thinner due to the warmer weather. Means an easier start which the weakened battery is incapable of. However, as the temperature drops oil will become more congealed and the engine will require more power/crank to turn over. The weakened plates, coupled with less electrical current due to cold weather, will probably lead to starting issues and ultimately battery failure.

VARTA BATTERY FITTING INSTRUCTION EXCLUSIVE TO OMNIPART CUSTOMERS.

START-STOP IS HERE TO STAY!

Going back only a couple of years, the majority of vehicles on the road were fitted with a standard lead acid battery. Start-Stop systems were fitted primarily to higher end vehicles meaning most of these vehicles would have probably gone through a main dealer and therefore not affecting the independent network. Fast forward a couple of years, this technology is available and common place in most new vehicles and at different price levels as the technology filters down.

What are the benefits;

With the increased complexity of battery replacement on newer vehicles and especially Start-Stop models, we have worked closely with VARTA to provide a step- by-step guide. For Start-Stop batteries fitment can be tricky and the location of these batteries are not always easy to find. Take the Range Rover Velar; the battery is stowed away in the boot. These guides aim to take away the complexity of fitment, saving you time, and best of all not having turn work away to another garage or OES. Log into Omnipart or create an account. A growing opportunity for the independent workshop Clearly the technology is not as easy to fit as a standard battery and will require a little more time and thought. An example of this is the Range Rover Velar; the battery is stored in the boot. Or take the Audi Q7; the battery is stored under the drivers seat, both meaning the fitment time is extended. However this shouldn’t deter you. Why turn work away to another workshop or OE garage a workshop will obviously charge for the extra labour time?

ECO/reduced power modes – this is because the vehicle learns the battery state and as it gets older the vehicle electronics make allowances for this. Not knowing a new battery has been fitted can cause these protections to activate when not needed.

Fire – in extreme cases it can also cause fires. This is because the charge system may overcharge an already charged battery at a high rate (200amps+) resulting in the excess energy becoming heat and setting the battery alight.
