A message from our CEO

After 18 months of doom and gloom, things are certainly starting to look up – finally! And whilst at the time of writing Covid cases are still quite high, restrictions in some areas of the country are starting to ease, and the vaccine programme continues to gain pace. In the most recent updates from each of the home nation governments, the take home message has been very much around our own social responsibility and making the right choices, even as things like mask wearing and social distancing become optional in some areas. As I’m sure you will have seen in all of our communication throughout the pandemic, our priority has always been on the safety of our customers and our team members, and that’s not something that will be changing any time soon.

We’ve been incredibly proud of how our team have come together (albeit very far apart for safety reasons!) to continue to support you. At times, you might have thought us a little over cautious, but our main goal has been to keep our customers moving, even at the worst of times. But positive change is coming. In this issue, you’ll see some fantastic content around how to get yourself set up for success and really tap into the MOT wave now upon us. There’s an abundance of opportunity out there, thanks to the shift in the usual MOT demand calendar and the repair needs of those vehicles that have sat stationary for long periods of time over the last year or so.

Alongside that, many of us will be taking holidays in this country this summer while there’s still uncertainty around international travel, so offering safety checks to your customers before they head off and testing sometimes overlooked things like batteries, bulbs and wipers while those cars are on the ramp, are all things we can support you with. Read on to find out more about what we can offer to help you in these areas. For the time being, we’ll be retaining many of our safety measures in our branches, until we know it’s safer to reduce and remove them entirely. So if you do visit us at a branch, you’ll see our

recommendations around face masks, social distancing and limited capacity while you’re with us. Our teams will continue to respect your own safety guidance if they are making visiting you at your sites too. Wishing you a safe and sunny summer.

Test to earn – battery checks

Why wait till winter to get engaged with batteries?

Make sure you are testing every vehicle that enters the workshop

Testing batteries is a huge profit opportunity. It should take no more than ten minutes to check a car battery if you’re equipped with the right battery tester. Doing a battery health check will alert you to any underlying battery faults before they become an issue, in turn helping you to build customer confidence because they’ll know where to come back to next time. The stats speak for themselves and an opportunity for your garage could be just round the corner:

■ One in three vehicles entering a workshop could require a new battery ■ Three out of four customers will purchase and replace a battery the same day if the test accurately shows a weak/bad battery ■ 40% of national breakdowns occur as a direct result from battery failure.

Talk to your account manager to find out how to get your hands on this DHC tester FREE!

Payment options Did you know, we can provide finance and payment options? Over 11,000 garages have taken out a business loan over the last 12 months but this option might not always be the right thing for your business. But there are alternatives out there for you... Buying any new piece of garage equipment can be a significant investment for your business, but what if you need that equipment to: add a new service to your business, keep up to date with vehicle technology advancements, or upgrade an existing piece of equipment? The Easy Start Scheme is a solution that can make purchasing new garage equipment simple and affordable. Our finance options allow you to purchase what you need to meet your business demands and in turn grow your business by offering an initial low start finance plan on the equipment you purchase.

6 month Buy Now Pay Later example ■ Air con machine price inc. VAT £1590.00 ■ Total Buy Now Pay Later £1590.00 ■ Deposit £244.80 ■ Total after deposit payable £1345.00 due in 6 months Buy Now Pay Later Buy now and pay nothing for 3 or 6 months. £500 minimum spend.

Extended Payment Plan Split your payment over 12/24 months for a limited company or 10 months for Sole Traders. This is all done through a credit agreement. £1200 minimum invoice value.

Split Cheque Pay for your purchase in three instalments using three post- dated cheques. £500 minimum spend. Deposit payable is the VAT amount.

Your Payment Options

Save Money with Super Tax Deduction As well as payment plans and finance options, you may also be able to save some money through Super Tax Deduction. The government is encouraging Limited companies to make investments in plants and machinery. Super Tax Deduction allows companies to claim 130% capital allowances on qualifying purchases so for every £1 a company invests, their taxes are cut by up to 25p. Contact your accountant to find out if you can claim Super Tax Deduction.

Easy Start Scheme Spreading the cost with our Easy Start Scheme. This enables you to pay while the new equipment starts to generate additional income. ■ £100 per month. Low start for the first six payments ■ Upgrade your garage equipment as previously planned ■ Faster business opportunities

through new equipment and additional services.

Air con season –

While we are coming towards the end of air con season, it isn’t quite over just yet.

There are still summer staycations to be had, another heatwave predicted across the UK in August and plenty of cars with air con machines that need servicing. Plus, air con servicing is an opportunity that comes around every year, so even though we are at the tail end of the 2021 air con season, take this opportunity to prepare for 2022.

Get the most out of the next few weeks ■ Use your customer database and phone all your customers with air con machines that haven’t been serviced this year and let them know you offer this service. ■ Offer the service to every customer that comes in as an optional extra when their car is on the ramp. ■ Make sure you update your database to reflect who has had their aircon serviced this year so you can remember to contact them when the time comes for their next service in 2022.

Make sure your machines are performing at 100% While your machines are having some down time, why not get them serviced by Autoclimate to make sure they are ready for next year?

autoclimate TM

Not only do they offer comprehensive service package, but the also provide: ■ 3 and 5 year warranty packages for any aircon machines purchased in the last 12 months ■ A technical support team ■ Nationwide air con engineers ■ And more. Who is Autoclimate? Autoclimate is the UK’s largest specialist in the installation and servicing of air conditioning systems, established in 1984 and acquired by LKQ Euro Car Parts in 2013. They are recognised, recommended, or approved by 95% of vehicle manufacturers and importers, underlining our credentials as the market leader in the UK automotive air conditioning market.

Hybrid training

Why is hybrid and electric vehicle training important for your garage? Hybrid and electric vehicles are at the forefront of many car manufacturer agendas.

Most recently Nissan announced their £1billion investment into a new battery factory which has the potential to produce batteries for 100,000 electric vehicles each year. 1

Ford promised that 100 percent of their passenger vehicle range in Europe will be zero emissions, all-electric or plug-in hybrid by 2026 and will be completely all-electric by 2030. 3

Volvo has committed to making its entire model line-up fully electric by 2030. 2

The UK will need 7,000+ hybrid and electric technicians each year for the next 10 years to keep up with the rise in hybrid and EV sales

Only 5% of UK technicians are trained to work on these vehicles safely

That is a lot of potential custom for your garage but are your technicians trained to deal with the new technology?

We have all the training your technicians need.

Level 2 and 3 Award in hybrid electric vehicle routine maintenance activities, system repair and replacement

Level 4 Award in the diagnosis testing and repair of electric/hybrid vehicles and components Level 4 provides further understanding of HV battery management for both nickel metal hybrid and lithium ion batteries, the operation and control of inverters/converters and the methods to control three phase synchronous brushless drive motors/generators.

Other subjects covered include high voltage airconditioning compressors, DC-DC converters, PTC heater assemblies along with high pressure hydraulic braking systems and the management between conventional braking and regeneration braking balance.

Garage Services

Easy Start Scheme

Why Garage Services? These days keeping customers and finding new ones is tough. With fierce competition, you shouldn’t have to decline work because you're unable to offer services in-house. Nothing is more expensive than a missed opportunity. This is where our Garage Services from LKQ Euro Car Parts can help – a range of added value services designed to provide your customers with all the regular services required to keep their vehicles up to date.

■ Additional revenue streams for your workshop ■ Ability to provide first fix solutions Benefits of Garage Services:

■ Increased satisfaction and retention ■ Avoiding losing a customer or work to a competitor.

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

There are approximately 4.5 million Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) enabled vehicles in the UK, according to Thatcham Research. Calibration is required whenever a sensor’s aim is disturbed in any way. This can occur because of collision or in a workshop due to a windshield replacement, suspension repair or wheel alignment. All repairers should follow the UK Insurance Industry Requirements (IIR) for the safe repair of ADAS equipped vehicles.

Buy or Lease with Confidence Workshop Solutions aim to provide you with the tools, equipment and service that match both your personal expectations and your business requirements. We only use suppliers who can offer a comprehensive warranty service and backup for the life of the equipment. We will also arrange demonstrations wherever possible and offer advice on the best products and services to suit your business.

£

Training The ADAS course offered by AutoEducation covers the implications of incorrect alignment, operation, and calibration techniques. On completion of the course, delegates will be able to: understand features of Dynamic and Static calibration and accurately calibrate camera and radar-based driver assist systems.

11

Garage

Diagnostic Tools and Services

Having the right diagnostic tools can ensure your garage is able to diagnose and resolve issues across the vast range of today’s vehicles and changing technology. This also reduces the amount of technician time spent on each vehicle, giving you increased work capacity. Technical Support – Security Gateway From 2017, vehicle manufacturers have been fitting a Security Gateway module to vehicles to stop unauthorised network manipulation via the OBD port or telematics, which can put vehicle systems and drivers at risk. It therefore requires an authorised diagnostic tool to be unlocked by the vehicle manufacturer to gain full access.

Wheel Alignment

Regular alignment checks are an essential part of a vehicle’s service maintenance schedule. Every day driving affects wheel alignment and over time, wheels can become misaligned. Poor road conditions, potholes, kerbing a vehicle and worn suspension components will also impact on a vehicles wheel alignment. Most sources recommend an alignment service every 10,000 miles, 1 to 3 years, with each new set of tyres or when replacing steering and suspension components. It only takes 10 minutes to perform a wheel alignment check and it’s estimated that 1 in 5 cars coming into a workshop will have an alignment issue and on average 1 in every 14 vehicles checked will highlight issues that will require additional parts and labour work to be carried out.

Why Alignment? ■ Regular wheel alignment checks are recommended ■ If you replace steering or suspension components ■ If you replace tyres ■ 1 in 5 vehicles will require alignment.

12

Services

Engine and DPF Carbon Cleaning

With tighter MOT rules and limits linked to vehicle emissions, it’s vital that emission control devices such as catalysts and diesel particulate filters are functioning correctly. Why Carbon Cleaning? Trends show we’re keeping vehicles longer and looking to reduce cost of vehicle ownership. There are millions of vehicles on the road with DPFs. Up to 70% of clogged DPFs are unnecessarily scrapped, meaning you could be paying for a replacement when cleaning would restore the part to perfect working condition.

The benefits of providing an engine and DPF carbon cleaning service are:

■ Reduces emissions ■ Clean blocked DPF’s ■ Improves fuel efficiency ■ Restores engine performance ■ Increases a positive reputation from customers

Tyre and Wheel Equipment

Around 10% of all MOT failures are tyre related. This trend has been increasing year on year, with the number one tyre failure associated to worn treads, bulges, and cuts in the tyre wall. Any vehicle displaying a TPMS fault when submitted for its MOT will result in a test failure. Due to wear, tyres need to be replaced every two to three years based on the current average annual mileage figures. This figure doesn’t consider any tyre damage caused by poor road conditions such as potholes. TPMS sensors/valves also need to be checked annually and replaced if required.

If you’re currently turning away or sending tyre related work to another garage because you don’t have the right equipment for the job, you should consider adding tyre replacement as a service.

If you don’t have the equipment you need for certain jobs and find you are turning away or sending work to another garage, talk to your local LKQ Euro Car Parts branch about Garage Services. This could help bring your garage to the next level and open up your streams of revenue.

Palmer Sports: Customer Engagement Days

With the easing in some restrictions, last month gave us the opportunity to get back to what we love doing best – spending time with our customers (safely of course!)

As the events and hospitality industry started to reopen its doors, we were able to host our much- anticipated customer engagement days at the famous Palmer Sports track days in Bedford. Over the course of seven days, more than 150 customers were able to enjoy a spin around the track in a number of high-performance cars including a Formula 3000, BMW M2 and much loved Carterham, among others. To add a little incentive into the mix, and to encourage our guests to push their laps to the limit, we also had some fantastic prizes up for grabs for the fastest times.

The events were supported by our partners Pagid and Bosch, who were on hand to chat to customers about the latest in product development and trends to look out for as we emerge from life post-Covid. The LKQ Euro Car Parts teams were also on hand to talk about the challenges our customers are facing, and how we might be able to support them.

Colin Cottrell, LKQ Euro Car Parts Marketing Director was really pleased with the success of the events: The last 18 months have been hard on everyone, and we’ve been waiting for the right moment to reschedule our calendar of customer events. Now restrictions are starting to ease, and our teams have been able to get back out on the road safely, it feels like the right time to start bringing people back together and do something a bit fun! The team at Palmer have done a fantastic job of running a Covid-safe venue, and our own teams have worked incredibly hard to deliver a really great day out. But most importantly, each day was a brilliant opportunity to talk to our customers first hand and understand what they want to see from us both now, and in the future.

Don’t just take our word for it, here’s what our customers had to say about it…

“Can’t speak highly enough about the day – I won some hybrid training too!”

“Incredible, well organised – these are sort of things that set LKQ Euro Car Parts apart from the rest.”

“Had a fab time, an amazing day – overall a brilliant day and was really grateful for the opportunity.”

Starline Range Expansion Offers Garages More

Customers can now enjoy a comprehensive range of Starline electrical components – as the HAAS range is effectively re-branded – including ignition coils, EGR valves and engine sensors, for most of the UK car parc. They can also now choose from Starline’s new, market-leading range of flat and universal wiper blades, which covers 96% of passenger and utility vehicles in the UK. We’re enhancing our product offering for independent garages by taking the Starline brand into the electrics and wiper blades categories.

The Starline range was established in 1999

Includes more than 35,000 products

Covers more than 90% of spare parts for passenger vehicles

Originally a steering and suspension brand, Starline has been at the forefront of the automotive industry for more than 20 years, earning a solid reputation as a go-to for workshops.

With an estimated 15 million wiper blades sold in the aftermarket every year, Starline’s OE-quality range is tested and assured so that garages can fit them with confidence and access a proven product at the right price, every time.

Colin Cottrell, Marketing Director at LKQ Euro Car Parts, said: The Starline brand never stands still and is constantly evolving, with a focus on research and development both to enhance existing products and launch new ones. As vehicles become more and more sophisticated, they have increasingly specific requirements when it comes to servicing both inside and out. Expanding our Starline range will help the garages we support to meet these requirements every time, and to be able to offer their customers a trusted branded alternative, at a great price. Using our best-known brands to provide options tailored to every budget reflects our ‘good, better, best’ offering. This helps garages to empower customers to make their own decisions when it comes to their vehicles, and is an important way for them to drive loyalty and trust.
